Omg, just went out for my first run in....well, forever, i did a mile and realised how unfit i am!!

But everyone has to start somewhere eh?!

Feel good for it and i know i need to keep it up!!

Any other runners/New to exercise wanna start a group with me just to spur me on and nag at me to get off my fat bum? Xxxxx

Huge congratulations on your run today! Remember even Paula Radcliffe had to start somewhere . . . I started running (if you could call it that)in April 2011 and could jog very slowly for one minute then walk to recover for three and repeat it three times. Gradually thought this improved until I didn't need to walk and to cut a long story short, I did race for life 10k on 18th May and am now signed up for a half marathon in November. I love now running especially outside.

Well done!!! I have my race for life coming up this weekend, only the 5k one but i might make the 10k one my goal for next year!!

I took up running last year and have now competed in loads of races. I did couch to 5k to start with and I can't sing the praises of that programme enough. From those first minute long runs to being able to complete a half marathon is an amazing feeling. I'm now training for my first marathon and hoping to do London next year if I get in! Stick with it and anything is possible!

Well done! That's a massive achievement. Maybe it is possible for me to actually do it and get somewhere with the running

Hi, well done on your first run!

As mentioned above, I also did the C25k plan which is brilliant - I can now run 5k and love doing it!

I joined a running forum, similar idea to minimins, which gave the the running plan to follow and was a great support whilst training.

Running is a good cheap way of keeping fit, I hope you continue to enjoy it :)

Hi guys,

Well done with your running, I used to do loads - started just like you did and doing half a mile on, half off, then 3 miles, then 5, then 7 - eventually got to doing two 5mile runs during the week and a ten miler at the weekend, then did two half marathons, both in under two hours. THis would have been unthinkable for me when I was starting, but if I could do it, anyone can! I also found it massively addictive too, like my body would want to run even if my head didn't.

Sadly though, in the last year I stopped - suddenly one weekend, and never went back. For some reason like it was raining. Was also a bit miserable, so ate loads...and I find myself back in the same position as when I started. So I will join in this thread if thats OK and try to build things up again...going to try three miles at the weekend. Good luck everyone!

Well done!! You will get there, you have done it before so you know you can do it again!!!

I, unfortunately, have found a new love......my hula hoop!! I find it easier to do as i can do it indoors, my hubby goes to work really early so i can't go for a run in the morning and by the time he gets home and i have done dinner, tidied it up and got the kids to bed i don't really wanna go out (we don't live in a great area so don't wanna go out on my own!!) but i find myself on my hula hoop all the time!!

I will try running again soon once my stamina is up a bit!!

Well done to all of you!!

Anna xx

Hula sounds great, I just don't have the hip action to do it - I think you either can or you can't! Bet it is great fun. And you can do it in front of Eastenders!

I have never been able to keep a hulk hoop up in my life but i bought this one from tesco and its weighted and so much easier than a normal kids hoop! I went from not being able to get it round at all 2 days ago and now im learning his to lift it about my head and put it back down to my waist! I love it, i can be using it for an hour and sweating and not even realise that its actually a really good work out lol!! Xx

Oooh OK I will check the weighted version out. Need something to do when it is so wet outside.

Hi All, I've just started out as a "runner" too. My consultant got some of us into our local parkrun, 5k on a Saturday morning (parkrun UK home). It's totally additive - every week I try to get a new pb! I've also signed up for the Peterborough half marathon in October. Love the idea of getting some hola hooping in! I can count that as cross-training :)

Hi All!
I too started on a walk run programme last year (although have ran in the past but never more than 3 miles). I managed to complete the Great North Run with a combination of running and small bouts of walking in 2:47.
This year I'm training properly, outdoors, 4 days a week!
I run 5 miles on Mondays, Wednesdays & Fridays, with a long run early on a Sunday morning! I managed 10 miles yesterday!
I'm hoping for a sub 2:30 running all the way this year for the Great North Run! I completed the Great North 10K the other week and knocked 8 minutes off my personal best, was very pleased with that!
I love how running is helping my weight loss, changing my shape, and improving my fitness levels! The initial build up to 3 miles can be daunting, but it's such an achievement when you get there and I get such a buzz from running!

Good luck to everyone on their training plans!

Well done Suzie, good luck getting your pb! I've watched the great north run a few times on tv and the crowd support looks amazing, I'm sure you'll do great.

Longest run to date so far - 70 minutes along the Leeds-Liverpool canal. There was quite a lot of walkers / cyclists / runners out this morning, the olympics and sunshine combo must be having a positive effect on the nations activity levels :)

I've just signed myself up for the Edinburgh 10k in October this year. I'm quite nervous - really need to get in some training! I have a cross trainer at home, do you think using that would benefit me, or is the only suitable practice just to get out in the streets running?

I do quite a bit of hiking and climbed Ben Nevis last month and made good time, but I've never done running. I have memories of doing the 800m at school and collapsing in a heap!

Good luck for you 10k! I think using your crosstrainer will be good for increasing your fittness levels building up to the race (especially if the weather is poor) but nothing beats getting out there and going for a run. Start by doing a mixture of walking and running and gradually build up to just running.

Cross trainers are good for between runs to work diff muscles groups, but as has been said, nothing beats getting out there and pounding the pavements!
I've the Great North Run in just over 2 weeks, last year I trained on the treadmill with only a few outside runs and a go on the cross trainer. This year, I've trained regularly outdoors, and supplemented with swimming once a week, and the occasional bike ride. My stamina has improved greatly, and this year I'm not daunted by the GNR at all, I know I can do it, even if I'm not one of the amazing elite, or club runners!
