Giving up for lent - anybody want to join in?

As a child we always gave up sweets and chocolates for lent. As an adult I never really bothered too much with it. But I think this year I am going to revert to my childhood and support my weight loss by giving up syns that are made up of sweets and chocolates.

Yes, the weight loss is probably my ulterior motive, but I would like to use this opportunity to meditate on the meaning of the sacrifice and the indulgent and lazy lifestyle that led to my weight gain in the first place, and to take the time to think about how I could really do something meaningful about those people for whom giving up a treat is not an option because they do not have the treats in the first place.

Would anybody like to join in and choose something to give up, not only to help their weight loss, but to see if together we could share insights and support each other in a more meaningful way as we consider our own lifestyle and how we could make tiny changes that will positively affect our lives and the people in it?

Hi,

was thinking about this today.

I'm going to give up wine & sweets.

eek!!! :wave_cry::wave_cry::wave_cry:.

As kids we always gave up sweets too!

I'll be requiring your support though!

Hi Louanna, welcome to our little project. I am so glad you have replied because I am going to need support too.

What is your worst time of day for trying to resist temptation? For me it is late at night when my day is over and I am relaxing, despite having just had tea which is my main meal of the day. Yesterday was the first day of lent and so far so good :D. We can really do this!

If you have a look on the challenges page there is a pre-existing thread for this. :) obviously each to their own! Keeps it tidier though :)

I have decided to give up Alcohol!

The only other time I have managed this was when I was pregnant 2 years ago! Having a 2 year old its the only thing that keeps me sane when he goes to bed lol!

Sorry Lickthelid, I didn't think to check this first. I have since done so and found the thread you were referring to. Never mind, some people have joined in here so we will keep it going. The focus of this thread is more to find the positive thoughts that we can associate with our little sacrifice, so I hope I am not offending anyone if I keep it going.

Welcome LairocseLady. Good on you. We will support each other here. I don't have children but I teach teenagers so I can sympathise with the need to stay sane at the end of the day!

I gave up chocolate last year and felt so excited about the weight I'd lose. Then I replaced it with Krispy Crème Donuts...

Lol! :8855:No, the point here is not to replace your chocolate or alcohol with Krispy crème donuts, but to replace it with a thought about how spoiled and wealthy we are compared to others in the world, even if it is just to remember those less fortunate for a moment in our busy, overindulged lives.

haha no I believe the expression is "the more the merrier!" ;)

Hello friends. We have reached our first weekend. How is everybody doing so far? For me the first couple of nights were quite tempting because I happen to have some treats in the house. They are still uneaten I am pleased to say and the urge to gobble them up is diminishing. They will either be given away by Easter (which will be easier for me) or I am sure they will last till after, which will test my resolve.

Saturday morning musings.
I've just had 2 alpen light bars (hex) for my breakfast (nom nom).

I'm thinking that any wrapper that has chocolate & fudge written on it should really constitute a "sweet".

But yanno, I worry that cutting out that little sugary lifeline will result in me ultimately caving in spectacularly & snorting Easter eggs.

So I'll keep it in thank you very much.

Stay strong for the weekend quitters!!!!

I wouldn't worry Louanna. If it counts as a HE then it doesn't count as syns unless you have already had your HE for the day, and I quite agree with you - we all need our sweet tooth satisfied. My goal is to give up syns made of sweets and chocolates, but I can still allow myself a biscuit every now and then or a choccy flavoured SW bar or alpen bar.

Still going here although with paddy's weekend this weekend I might end up failing lol.

How is everyone else doing?

Happy St Paddy's day! Well done for sticking with it so far, I hope St Paddy doesn't tempt you too much! So far so good, I have still not had sweets or chocolates, even to the point of not allowing myself hi-fi bars with any chocolate flavour, no chocolate digestives, no Mikado sticks, no choc shots, no chocolate options. I have allowed sweet treats such as biccies with no chocolate flavour, such as rich tea fingers or shortbread - that's not sweets and chocolate....... is it?????

I have decided to give up chocolate too, havent been finding it too hard till my dads and his gf got back from skiing and she had saved me a milka Chocolate bar she got :-( have hidden it in the back of the cupboard in the hope that if i cant see it i wont be tempted!

Nah peggydee rich tea in my opinion don't even come close to chocolate or sweets so well done :) easter will be here before we know it.
