Dryathlon

Hi everyone :)
I wondered if anyone was taking part in the 'Dryathlon'? Cancer research has put it forward, the aim being that you get sponsors and/or put aside your usual alcohol costs for the month of January then donate it.
I have decided to take part quietly, ie. No sponsors, to support a family member who is doing it.
Though I don't have a problem with booze, I do enjoy it & therefore will find this a challenge! It will be good for my losses and health overall and I'm looking forward to it.
I thought it might be nice to speak to anyone else taking part to cheer each other on :)

I am doing this :) I have signed up to Dry January which is through Alcohol Concern. Same principle though :)

I usually get through a bottle of wine a week, and sometimes a pint of beer or shandy. But I thought it would be good for me to have a month off the booze. Both for my waistline and my bank account. Some of the money I save will go into my savings account, the rest to Alcohol Concern. It won't be a huge amount of money, but something is better than nothing.

I tried last year, and failed spectacularly, but I am more determined to succeed this year.

Hey! I am definitely giving Dry January a go this year. I haven't signed up to any of the charity things but I will be laying off the booze to both boost my weight loss and help to save a bit of money. I'd gotten into a bit of a habit before Christmas of having a glass (or three!) of wine even midweek so hopefully it will help to break that habit.

Glad that you have set up this group so we can support each other :)

Hey, that's great I didn't realise alcohol concern were doing it too :) I'd like to make a donation at the end if I can.
I too tried to do Sober October and totally failed but my heart wasn't in it :-/ this time feels different though- having someone to support x

That's great Sophie, I know what you mean with wine midweek. Sometimes I just felt Wednesdays needed celebrating ;-)
I think its a winner all round- save money, boost losses and feel virtuous! Friday is going to be tricky though. I'm in somewhat of a 'pub habit' x

A new recipe at the weekend is a good idea! You may find something you really like.

This weekend is hopefully going to be ok. Going for a walk on Sunday which usually ends with a pub lunch! So not only am I going to need to try and be SW friendly, but avoid my usual pint or 2 of beer. I managed to avoid the beer last week, so I should be able to resist.

The weather here isn't brilliant. Wind and rain at the moment. I didn't even think to check the weather! I hope I can get at least a short walk done, then I won't feel so bad about eating out.

How is everyone getting on? Today is day 7, and I am feeling quite good about it. I think I had failed by this time last year.

I think Saturday is the worst day weather wise so maybe Sunday will be OK!
I'm doing alright so far. Last night & tonight are a bit testing as I've been going to my mums (I live next door!) To watch Silent Witness and we would normally crack out the wine & chocolate. I told her I'm doing this & she's been v supportive though, kettle on and a muller Greek style for me!
Why do you think you failed last year Elanor? X

Fingers crossed Sunday will be ok.

It's good you have support like that :) Makes it much easier.

I think I failed last year as my head wasn't in it. I didn't have much motivation, and there were a lot of changes in my life at the time. Plus I wasn't doing Slimming World, and didn't have much of an aim to lose weight. Now I am focussed, and can see the benefits of less alcohol and losing weight :)

Yeah it really helps! My parents do like a drink at the weekend so it might be a test.
I know what you mean re less alcohol for weight loss. I always knew drinks were empty cals but til it was put in syn terms I didn't really see how much I was overdoing it!
Is anyone else around you doing it?
I think I failed as I was the only one that thought I might give it a go- a bit halfhearted too if I'm honest x

I was soooooo tempted to pick up a bottle of red wine on the way home - we're having steak for tea and it feels wrong to have it on its own! But I quickly realised I was just doing it out of habit and that I'm not that fussed for a drink really. Squash and tea will do me!

What about having a bit of an on plan treat? We've got steak and chips for tea and I bought us some low syn treats like popcorn and jelly :)

Ahh steak and red wine! I can see your struggle there- but first hurdle overcome so good job :) enjoy your tea, I'm so jealous! We've hardly anything in and I can't get pizza out of my head :-( OH is going to collect a kebab :-O supportive lol.
I do have some treats so I'll enjoy those later on- bit of a biscuit fiend at the moment! X
