Diabetes

Ok hi everyone! Not new to SW and generally know how it goes! I'm a type 1 insulin dependent diabetic. I don't have a group yet, but have been following my old food optimising book for 5 days until I can get to my first meeting tomorrow, but had a hypoglycaemic attack last night and had to have some lucozade and chocolate.

It hasn't thrown my syn intake completely off for the week, I was only on 25.5 syns total for the week to date anyway compared to the 75 I was allowed to have, but still.... When I'd tried so hard it's devastating.

What I'd like to know is, is there a get out of jail free card for us diabetics in Slimming World when it comes to unavoidable hypo's? Or do we have to just use the syns for them? Because now I'm scared to use my syn allowance during the day, for fear of a hypo during the night that will throw off my syn intake?!

Thanks for any advice forthcoming and wish me luck at my 'first' new meeting at a new group in the morning with a bit of luck the consultant will be able to advise me on this! :)

Hi Holly, Can you check your blood sugar before bed time, and have something to eat before you go to sleep if it's too low to prevent it dropping and having hypo in the night? Prevention might be better. A glass of milk and a banana or biscuit before you settle down might be better for your weight loss. Obviously you have to do whatever you need to, to get yourself out of a hypo if it happens-and you shouldn't have to be thinking about syns in that situation. if you tell your consultant you are diabetic, she will have a booklet for diabetics that you can take to gp or diabetic nurse so you can follow their advice. Hope that helps x
