Smoothies

I'm brand new to slimming world. I've just got the books and am going over the diet. Its alot to get your head around!

I wondered if anyone could answer a question please?

Am I right in thinking that I could have, for example, a bowl of chopped banana, berries, apple or another fruit with some yogurt for breakfast and this would all be free? But if I had all of those things but blended them into a smoothie, I would have to count it as syns? Also if so, how would I know how many syns to count that as?

I'm not sure if I am getting this right but hopefully one of you slimming world veterans can help me. :)

I am on extra easy.

im new too so hopefully someone else will be ble to answer fully. All i know is that when you blend or mash fruiy they break down and give out more sugars which doesn't make them free. Not sure how youd count the syns though, sorry.

I have smoothies, but dont use more fruit thenb i would normally eat in a day. My thinking is it will get broken down when i eat it. I also only have 10 syns, so if it is a couple i can go up to 15. Hopr that helps

The raw state that fruits come in means it would take you longer to eat and it would give your body time to know if it is full up before finishing, whereas a smoothie can be downed in a couple of mouthfuls. IT IS NOT ABOUT HOW MUCH FRUIT YOU WOULD EAT IN A DAY BUT HOW MUCH YOU WOULD EAT IN ONE SITTING. (whoops sorry about the capitals) You need a lot of fruit (more than you would eat in one sitting to make a decent size glass of smoothie Some smoothie makers also prevent all the pith and skin bits getting in which is the fibre you need. If you are new to SW play it safe and stick to the rules until you really have got your head around it. If you tweak these rules you are not keeping to plan 100 % and may not get as good losses x

The fact that smoothies are synned is not just to do with the quantity of fruit you are consuming. When you chew fruit your salivary glands get to work which kicks your metabolism into action. So when you drink a glass of pureed fruit, not only does the sugar rush straight through your bloodstream (and get converted to fat if you're not very active) but because you're not chewing the fruit, your body is not working as hard to digest it therefore making it more likely to be stored as fat. So although you might be blending up the same amount of fruit you would normally eat into a smoothie, you're still better off chomping it in its raw form.

Ok thanks all, I think i'll just have the bowl of fruit for the timebeing.

I think fruits are a lot more interesting whole anyway. You can try incorporating some exotic and unusual fruits to keep things exciting. My fave way to eat fresh chopped fruit is with a pot of 2% greek yogurt (0.5) and a tsp of honey (1) drizzled over it. Filling, sweet and delicious! :D

Well said!! Another point is that however much fruit you use it only count as two of your 5 a day. When you blend any fruit its vitamins and nutrients start to lose their potency

Banana, berries, apple, other fruit and yoghurt would take a while to eat. While you are eating your body is recognising that food and starting to digest it. That fruit and yoghurt whizzed into a smoothie would be gone in no time and you would not be as full, or would be hungrier sooner, than if you ate the fruit.

I wouldn't just do it for the time being, I would always do it. There's no way I'd recommend a smoothie, SW don't allow them for a reason.

as for synning them, not sure of the other fruit but one small mashed/blended/pureed banana is 4.5 syns.
