thinking of joining...

Hi all

I'm currently on Xenical but I am considering joining Slimming World Group Meetings. The only problem is I am quite a nervous person, and I have no idea what to expect.

Do you get hand outs weekly like you do at WW, what things do they do in the groups etc?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated,

Thanks In Advance,
Donna

Hi Donna. I was quite like you when i first went to group, i was nervous about it and quite shy. I needant have worried as everyone was soo welcoming. everyone there has a common goal - to loose weight.

I now look forward to going to class. First everyone gets weighed (No one can see how much you actually weigh, and no one is really interested as they are all thinking about there own weightloss and chatting) this can take a while depending how many people are at your group. then everyone sits around and our consultant goes around each person and talks to them about their loss or gain (this part used to scare me but it sounds worse than it is, its more like a group discussion sharing ideas). you are under no pressure you can say as little or as much as you like! we share alot of recipes, every month or so we will have a taster of new recipes we might have found and a little raffle. not all groups are the same but i think they do follow a similar set up!

Have you had a proper look at the diet? Extra Easy consists of super free foods (fruit and veg), free foods (carbs and protien), Heatlth A (dairy) and B (fibre), and syns for everything else. you have to use at least 5 a day and upto 15. Syns are thought as treats, alot of people use them on chocolate, crisps, eating out, or even just adding things like mayo to meals.

wow i have rambled on alot, not sure if it will make sence, please come back thought if you need further help! x

thanks for the reply, i think i am just gonna go for it tonight and like you said, everyone is there for the same reason.

the diet thing i think i will need to get my head around, but i am hoping i will soon pick it all up.

thanks xx

Dont think of it as a diet - when I think of a diet I think of all the foods that I'm not allowed to eat.

Its actually a healthy eating plan - one that will educate you about food and teach you that nothing is banned - you just have to eat more of the things that are good for you, less of the things that aren't so good for you and use your syn allowance wisely.

It can be a little tough getting your head around the rules of the plan but it does get easier to understand after a few weeks.

I have a big appetite (read "I'm greedy" ;)) so for me the huge advantage of SW is that you can eat whenever you like so you never go hungry if you snack on superfree foods.

Good luck at your first meeting.

Try not to worry about first going into your meeting ... everyone will be very friendly and welcoming ... alot of people do go on their own to the meetings ... I am one of them .... Ive been going for 9 months now and am part of the social team .... I love going to class and chatting, getting ideas and help from other members ... some of the recipes are brilliant and there are a couple of us who frequent this site and take ideas back to the class .... Good luck xxxxx

This info is really helpful, I too am worried about starting classes. I know the SW plan pretty well but I'm getting nowhere doing it online.

I haven't had the best experiences in classes in the past, though I'm not really a shy person as such, I don't find it easy to join a group where everyone knows each other and try to fit in. I guess I won't know until I try.

I always found I went completely blank when the focus came on me, it made me so anxious that I banned the leader from announcing my loss/gain and talking to me about it. Mind you, I didn't know I was depressed at the time, I'm now having treatment so I'm hoping I won't feel the need to do that now.

I'm on hols soon so there's no point joining before I go and having to take 2 weeks off, so I'll join when I get back on the 23rd.

Best of luck to you Donna and to others joining too xx

I would recommend a group if you can.

Every week I go and every week my Consultant speaks to me and I go bright red :eek:, but I find it so helpful and motivating that it is worth 30 seconds of hot face.
I'm not a particularly shy person but I am quite private at times so find it hard to share info in a group situation.

It's worth a go, everyone is usually so friendly

I would def recommend joining a class. I woke up in Jan and decided it was time to finally do something bout my weight. Like you I was really anxious about the first meeting. When I got there I was in tears and almost walked back out. Luckily for me another member encouraged me to go in and its the best thing thats happened to me in years!! Ive lost 40.5lbs in 11 weeks and although I still have a long way to go I know that with the help of my group I will get there. Good luck on your journey - I KNOW you can do it. xx
