Synning Healthy Extras and Not Using All Your Syns

Ok so I think I'm about to start a debate but I am really questioning my new consultant and need some answers.

4 things she said at group:

    1. If you don't have a whole HE (only 200 ml of semi skimmed milk or only 3 scan bran for example) then it must be synned!!! I understand you need to have fibre and calcium for health but to punish for having 80% instead of 100% I just don't get???

    2. You can't mix HE's at all (1 Alpen light and 1 Weetabix for example) or they must be synned!!! Seems silly to me - especially this example where it's exactly half and half!

    3. If you don't have your 1/3 superfree with your meal you can always eat sone fruit afterwards! Doesn't this negate the whole point of filling up on superfree??? That's what my old C said.

    4. You MUST have ALL your syns. I was told that I have a syn "allowance" and so have been having between anything from 2 or 3 to 9 or 10 depending on the day. I know I can have more if I want to and knowing that gives me comfort. One member said that she often scoffs down crisps and chocolate just before bed just to use up her syns - not particularly because of hunger. I find this totally against the point of SW and retraining your bad food habits. It's nice to know I CAN have chocolate or crisps but I tend to use syns in my main meals. I'll use olive oil or light mayo and syn it or I'll have an extra Krisproll on top if my HE allowance of 3. Or I'll have a 'naughty' meal one night.

Please feel free to agree or disagree or at least try and clarify as I was kind of stunned in the meeting??????

I'm no expert, but that sounds wrong. I've once had apples with an omelette, but I had them at the same time, as a replacement for salad (it works in my head).

I definitely don't agree on the healthy extra thing. The point is to make sure you get enough fibre and calcium and stuff in your diet- the sources don't matter too much so long as it's from the list.

On syns, my understanding is you should aim for 5 to 15, but it's not going to hurt if you don't always use them. I've had 4 today, and I don't fancy anything else that needs to be synned, so I'm not going to force myself to eat something that I don't want just to use them. That's silly.

It's worrying that this advice is being given out. There might be people in the group that follow it and not think to question it like u have. I totally agree with what's been said tho

it is worrying, the relief consultant today said that a lot of members and consultants are confused about the superfree rule. thankfully she got it right and our regular consultant does.

i came a across one ages ago who strongly believed that if you ate banana and cereal for breakfast you wouldnt lose at all. well im living proof that her theory was untrue as i have 28g porridge and a big banana everyday for breakfast and have done for years!

Oh yeah she also said it took her AGES to get her head round EE as she'd always done red or green. Surely it's easier to get?

Ok that sounds weird and I can understand why you were confused. My consultant says the bit about fruit after a meal but she explains it as rather than having a dessert then have your fruit which woud count as part of your free food (although you could have dessert if you syn it).

Your C is way off track with these views. So don't worry you're going mad - you're the sane one!

Scoffing down syns just to use them up is ridiculous - they're there to be enjoyed so you don't feel deprived.

The only idea that's even partially correct is regarding the superfree after your meal. As you know sf is there to cut down on your portions of free food. It would be quite wrong to eat fruit as well as your free food but if you can't incorporate the third with your meal it's a good idea to leave a third of your plate empty and then eat your third sf (eg fruit) afterwards.

Good luck finding a more knowledgable C!

i wouldnt syn a healthy extra if i havent used it fully- and yes you can mix HEB- because it says that you can in some cases (like with weetabix and a ryvita- it says it in the one of the books in the starter pack)

i agree that having fruit *should* (not saying it does officially) count as the superfree if you are having it as part of the meal (aka- for pudding) my C says to try and stick to a 1/3 superfree in your day- not just a meal. We talked about it in group. not all meals i have can have/should have a load of salad or veg with it- so i have some fruit after, i just make sure that i still only have a reasonable amount of the rest of the food (aka- i only fill my plate up 2/3 anyway) really, my logic is- if it starts affecting my weightloss doing this- then i will change- but it isn't, so i won't.

and what bull about the syns. it's highly recommended (and apparently has been proven to speed up weightloss) to have between your 5-15 syns a day. some C's say that you can have them as a weekly thing and blow out at the weekend, some say you shouldnt. For me, i'm at the point now where the only time i save my syns is if i have a meal out planned for a special occasion. Most of the time i use them for my meals, adding a packet of something, or having tomato ketchup with my sw chips....

no one MUST do anything on slimming world- its just things that are recommended to lose the weight in the best way (quickest/healthiest) If your C says you must do stuff- then i would personally find another group with a C that is a little bit more "lenient"

Thanks for all the feedback guys :-)

Looks like my gut reaction was right on the whole and I've already decided to look for a new group.

It really was the syn thing that got me. I'm sure the idea behind having a syn ALLOWANCE is so that you are able to have a little treat IF you want it or have ketchup/mayo/olive oil with your free/superfree food and this means you're not deprived - and so don't cheat or binge?!?!?! That's what I do anyway!

    Thanks again :-)
