Newbie, vegetarian help please?

Hi all

After being diagnosed this week with depression I have decided to do something about my weight and have arranged to go to a class on Tuesday but I'm trying to research as much as I can before hand.

I'm a strict vegetarian and I also don't eat eggs or diary except cheese so I am wondering if I would find the diet difficult to do (also I'm not a fan of vegetables either)?

Thank you for your help :)

As a strict vegetarian you should be alright with the diet - I was one for 16 years and can't see where I would have struggled. (I was vegan until my desire for Bailey's got the better of me)

Where you may struggle is with not liking veg as the diet works by filling you up with low calorie fruit and veg so you don't over eat on the higher calorie protein and carbs and keep fat and sugar to a minimum.

Thank you :)

My mum and sisters keep trying to get me to eat veg but I just can't do it lol!

I do love fruit though and could happily graze on it all day long.

I'm hoping I can do it as I want to learn to eat healthily as when I did WW I just ate crap but not as much of it so I stayed within my points

There's no reason why you should find it difficult. I'm a strict veggie as are lots on here and have never felt restricted. Have a look at some of the green day diaries in the diaries forum for an idea of what people are eating. Good luck x

SW is great at getting you to eat healthily and actually change how you eat. Which means it is sustainable long term.

Hi!

A few ideas - curries, casseroles, pasta sauces made with pulses instead of Quorn (I do a lentil bolognese which may sound a bit odd, but I really like it!).

Could you make a 'hidden veg' pasta sauce with toms, carrots, onion, garlic and celery wizzed up in a blender? I use this to make pasta bake with a bit of cheese on the top.

Slimming World chips / jacket spud with veggie burgers / grills / sausages (Cauldron food Lincolnshire sausages are only 0.5 syns each and are lovely imo) & beans.

Good luck!

I'm veggie although unlike you I eat dairy. I love vegetables but you'll find plenty of recipes that sent based around veg. The Green plan would be perfect for you.

Thank you everyone for your help I feel a better now and looking forward to Tuesday!

This would be a perfect time time to start experimenting with yours foods and trying new things. SW is the perfect plan for vegetarians but veg are an essential part of making the vegetarian diet a healthy one.

I have been vegetarian for about 6months and like you I am a fussy vegetarian! In fact before I tried sw the first time I hardly ever ate any vegetables at all sweet corn was about the only one I liked. Sw made me eat healthier and also try more veg and quorn! There's still many I don't like, mushrooms creep me out and I hate all raw veg and salad but love loads of cooked veg now I know it's scary but try them chopped up really small and cooked in dishes maybe you will find you like some of them too :) x

Hi Danielle, I've been a lacto ova vegetarian for 17 years next month (wow, I didn't realise it was that long!!!!) lacto meaning milk and ova meaning eggs so unlike u I have eggs and dairy. I found it hard to be creative and not just eat baked pots every day when I was first doing this duet in 2008/2009. Here are some of my favourite: stir fry with black bean sauce, quorn chilli, bolognaise, quorn sausage, mash, peas n gravy, cheese n potato pie with beans, mozzarella n spring onion potato shells, potato cakes, slimming world chips with cheese n beans, peppers grilled n stuffed with Moroccan style cous cous n grill cheese on top.... I could go on and on.. Just give me a shout if ur stuck :)

Also my brother had severe depression last yr due to stress but what a difference this year! I would recommend exercise as it releases endorphins which makes u feel good and elevates ur mood.... And u get that lovely smug feeling :D lol

Good luck!!!

Linds x

Try veggies, little by little. You'll soon love it. ;)

I dont eat meat and dont really like much veg either so I make sure I only eat what I do like, e.g. I dont like many salad vegetables but I love coleslaw so I make that. Or I will make carrot and swede mash to have with my sunday dinner but never something like brocolli. You will find plenty of ways to enjoy the foods you do like :D
