Target setting

Hi

I know that with Slimming World you can set your own target and this doesn't have to be a certain BMI. I had set my Target as the very top end of a healthy BMI (25) which I am still 1 stone away from but have been considering changing this.

My thinking for this is that I'm not sure I want to be a size 10 and that is probabley what I would end up being with a BMI of 25. I am currently a size 12/14 but started 18/20.

I am now thinking to lose a further couple of pounds and end with a BMI of 27 which is a weight of 11 stone 5lbs.

My question is this, How have you decided on your target and for those of you that have reached it do you fall within the BMI healthy range?

Thanks
Sue

Hia, I never officially set my target at group untill i reached it. i set my target according to my bmi, i knew i wanted to be in the healthy range for definate as my target, once i got into the top end i still felt i wanted to loose more so i set my target according to a bmi of 21 as that is more or less slap bang in the middle of the healthy range and a nice rounded weight of 8st7 :) im there now at a size 8/10 x

You can set your target at whatever you want, I set mine at 9 and a half stone, but then changed it to 9 stone as soon as I hit it as I knew I wasn't happy, I'm happier now but considering changing it again to 8 and a half stone, but for now I'm happy If enough keeping this target and just seeing how I get along! If one day you get weighed and your happy with your weight and how you look then set your target there and then! At the end of the day we're doing slimming world for ourselves so our target should be where we are happy

I'm struggling with this too, tbh. I figured around 12 stone would be ok, and most importantly achievable! However, it still leaves me as 'overweight' and surely that's not something I should be aspiring to?

Please bear in mind that the bmi measurement has its flaws. I will likely never be in healthy BMI range for the simple fact that I have quite a big frame and the top end of healthy for me would make me look skeletal.

If you get to 12 stone and feel good then that is your target. Ignore the labels that say overweight and feel happy with your achievement. If you get to 12 stone and feel you could lose more then go for it but don't let some arbitrary system like BMI dictate your weight loss.

For what it's worth my GP actually advised my target ( also 12 stone) which would leave me as still 'overweight'. Since that will be a 6 stone loss for me he said that he would consider that healthy.

I was wondering about this too I want to set mine at about 12 stone as I started at 19 st 10 1/2 so a lot to lose and I can't ever imagine being under that yet! I'm 5ft 5 so right at the top of the bmi scale for me is 11 stone, so I'd still be overweight at 12 stone!

Does everyone else think like that or should we just go on what is comfortable for us? Are bmi's and healthy weights for our height to be believed or like some people say are they just a load of rubbish? And just a rough guideline?

See how you feel when you get there. If you arrive at what you intended as your target and are happy there, then call it. You can always take a break, have a few months of maintenance, see how you feel, and then come out of target to lose some more if you feel that you want to.

Yep that's what I think ill do. I can't imagine myself at like 10stone, as I've always been overweight since I was about 10 lol its hard to see myself thin if that makes sense, so I'm just going to have to plod on and see what happens

I had originally set my target at the top end of a healthy BMI (24.9!!). However... at the end of January I called target with a BMI of 28.0. I started with a BMI of 44.3.

My reasons for changing my target? My losses had really slowed (and so group was becoming a little depressing!!) but I just needed time for my head to catch up with my body changes. I was now actually just overweight and not morbidly obese, and had dropped from a 24/26 to a 14/16/18 (depending on how it hangs!!!). I've decided to save some money, maintain for about 6 months and then see how I feel.

Always remember, people see you how you are, they don't know a weight or a dress size unless you tell them!!!

Whatever you decide to do.... BE HAPPY!

I have set mine at 12 stone 5 which would be huge on some people but quite thin on me...............it means I would still be technically 'overweight' but I just dont think I will get below that.

Come to think of it, I dont think I will ever get to target lol! xxx

My targets set for 12st 8 (bmi 28ish) I'm currently 13st 13 but started at 20st 1lb! Ppl think I'm crazy when I say I've still got over a stone to lose cos of the amount of exercise I do I look a lot lighter than I am x

It's interesting to hear that most of you have set a goal with a BMI of 'overweight' as opposed to 'healthy'. I guess how it shows and fits on someone is individual. I weight 15st+ just now and wear a size 16-18. I'd be happy to maintain at a 14, I think, and can imagine that dropping below 12 st would be probably much smaller than that and, well, I just don't think it's how I'm meant to be! I have hips, I have a bust, I'd like to be 'slim' but a comfortable 14 would do that for me I think - at least that's how I feel about it at the moment. I know it's likely to change a few times though

It's always interesting to hear others' perspectives on this subject, thanks.

Hi, I am currently a target member. I set my goal to be just slightly more than my pre pregnancy weight! My BMI is a "healthy" 23, although BMI measurements are not 100% accurate(they do not take into account what the weight consists of..muscle or fat). I prefer to refer to my fat %, and how my clothes are fitting me!. I am currently 10stone 11lbs. If I lose another .5 lbs, then I will re-evaluate my goal, and probably set a new target that is lower. Xx

I'm glad this has been asked, its actually made me reassess my own goal. I had it at 11stone as that is top of my healthy range. Upon reading this it has helped me look at what I really want and have changed it to half way on the over weight scale. At the end of the day thats still a huge amount from the weight I started at and I am already feeling pleased with myself as I am almost in the obese section of the BMI chart rather than the morbidly obese!

I think this is what my GP was getting at since I started in morbidly obese... To get down to the middle of overweight will make me considerably healthier than before.
