Anyone tried the 5 2 fast diet in conjunction with SW?

    Hi all,

I wondered whether anyone had tried the 5 2 fast diet in conjunction with SW? I have heard a few of my friends mention it and did a search online and there was a program on bbc about it last year. Apparently it has all sorts of health benefits along with weight loss. The principles are you eat normally for 5 days of the week and the 'fast' for 2 non consecutive days. The fast days consist of less than 500 calories for women and 600 for men.

I wondered if this was another fad diet or if there was actually something in this and if anyone had tried it?

    many thanks

You dont eat normally for 5 days - its quite regulated I think. If it was that easy we'd all be doing it.

    This is a summary

The 5:2 diet: what is it and how does it work?
    • With the 5:2 diet, you can eat whatever you like five days a week — so-called feeding days. On the two “fasting days” you eat 500 calories if you are a woman, or 600 calories if you are a man.
    • It doesn’t matter which days are spent “feeding” and which “fasting”, as long as the fasting days are non-consecutive and you stick to the 5:2 ratio.
    • On fasting days you can consume your calories in one go, or spread them through the day — there is no medical research into whether filling up at breakfast or snacking throughout the day is more effective for weight loss.

It definitely puts no restriction on the 5 days other than normal eating.

i was wondering about doing it in conjunction with SW though?
    thanks

you wouldn't be able to do it while following slimming world.

The healthy extras alone are on average120 calories each= 240 calories and if you have 5 syns of something that has no free food allowance that's 100 calories

so 340 calories before anything else- before any free food and superfree...

this is becoming a common theme lately- why are people suddenly wanting to use TWO weight loss plans at one go?

Just pick one- follow it 100% and you will lose.

I know for a fact that Slimming World works if you follow the plan 100%

can't see the point in mixing 2 eating plans, just pick one and stick to it, I wouldn't have thought either would work properly if not doing 100%

Each to their own i think :-) i have been doin sw since 1st jan and lost quite slowly despite sticking to it 100 % i started to get annoyed and jelous of others eating whatever they like and losing tonnes! Sw is fab but works better for some, i certainly lose better with ww but prefer sw....am currently doing 5 days sw and 2 days 500 cals, on these days i dont have healthy extras or stick to sw rules i also have been having meals out, cake etc on sw days!! Its only been 2 wks and takes a while to get into rhythm of it...i lost 2lb last wk despite lots of bad foods, i feel sure that i can do this long term and lose better than sw alone. Its not for everyone but if u like the idea of it then give it a go, its better to do 5 days sw than 5 days gorging! Freedom to eat a few bad things is great, 5:2 diet has worked for lots of ppl, plenty of research to say it works.....and if it doesnt or you dont like it....no big deal! Go back to sw 7 days :-) different strokes for different folkes and all that. I am loving it so far! Good luck x

Thanks all for your replies. I'm just a bit worried about doing SW. I have tried it in the past for a few weeks (green days) and I put on about 4lb. The consultant couldn't work out why and I was so upset. Everything I ate I wrote down and am really active, going to the gym most days. Also posted on here and got a lot of support but I just didn't lose weight. I just gained a bit or STS.

I am a bridesmaid in 3 months and would really like to lose a stone and I'm just worried about gaining again if I only do SW, especially as recently I had an accident meaning I'm more or less on best rest for another 3 weeks.

Just trying to work out the best way to go.....

So really you are doing 5:2 and not SW at all - or am I missing something?

Someone at work is doing it and was trying to convince me about it but its not something that would fit with my lifestyle - I couldnt exercise on that few calories for instance and I dont think it teaches you anything about healthy eating. But if it is working for you then all power to you hun xx

I have heard a few people say that before when they did slimming world they put on weight. This is more than likely due o carb intake! People are thinking I can eat as much pasta, potatoes and rice I like, the truth is you can't! Especially if you don't exercise! If I have toast 1 day on sw I tend to stay away from other carbs that day. If I don't have toast I'll have a jacket potato/rice/pasta for my main, but I follow the sw guidelines of it being part of 1 3rd of my plate, so it's a small portion of pasta. I always exercise every night too.

i would defo just give one a go, sw is a lifestyle change, learning to make the right notices, I'd try that one first and see how you get on. If it isn't for you then try something else, but I would advise you to just watch your carb intake and you may be surprised at the weight loss good luck with whatever you choose to do

You're right Jen, or should I say you're *both* right. there are different formulations of the 5:2 diet. One where you eat a Meditteranean diet on the 5 feed days and one where your eating is totally unrestricted on the 5 feed days. The latter is the Michael Mosely one (in the book 'The Fast Diet' and on the BBC Horizon programme last summer).

I am trying to do sw 5 days and 500 cals the other 2 days but have only just started and have gone a bit ott on the foods i have been avoiding for so long! Its common when first doing 5:2 to go a bit mad on 'feed days' you apparently settle into your normal eating habits after 3-4wks. So i havent been doing sw or 5:2 properly! Plan is 5 days sw 2 days 500 cals and if i have meal out or slice of cake i wont worry that have failed. If i had to label it i would say i am doing 5:2 and healthy eating....stuck to sw rules religiously for 7 wks and mostly enjoyed it but enjoying this too and loving throwing the rule book out, like i said each to their own, if it doesnt work well for me i will try something else or go back to sw 100%. All diets work if u stick to them but its not one size fits all, different diets work better for different people. Anything is worth a try if only to shake off boredom and not get institutionalised lol Good luck on your weight loss battle too, sure we will all get where we want to be in the end :-) xx
