Food tweaks

Hi
I have joined again (chickened out in May!!) and was just wondering what is classed as allowed and what not as tweaks.

I totally understand cous cous cake, lasagne crisps, and chick pea nuts not being allowed as obviously they are just a licence to overeat  (I have never tried any of them so if they arent easy to overeat I apologise:))

The ones I am wondering about are using cous cous or smash for coatings on things like onion rings, SW KFC and scotch eggs or as a base like smash pizza.

for the coatings such a small amount is used and you are eating nutritious free food along with it.... the smash pizza a step too far?? Or is it all totally not allowed unless it is syned or eaten as intended.

I hope this ramble makes sense!!

Hiya at my group we were told if ur having a smash pizza often (like daily) then to syn it, but if its a treat then its ok as free food

With the scotch eggs/ kfc its such a small amount its still free ( which im very pleased at cos I makes these once a week each)

2. Are couscous cake, Smash pizzas and lasagne-sheet ‘Doritos’ Free?
You might be disappointed to hear that they’re not. Because changing the use of a food can make it easier to over-eat, to protect your weight loss they become Synned.

When foods like pasta, rice and grains are used in their original form they’re low in energy density (calories), bulky, appetite-satisfying foods. Pasta, couscous and rice are usually the main ingredient in a meal packed with other Free Foods – giving it sufficient bulk to be satisfying as a meal in itself. However, when ground down, used as flour (like in couscous cake), used as a sauce thickener (like Smash), seasoned crisps (like Doritos) or puréed (like smoothies) they’re often used as additions to a main meal… and on top of your day’s Syns. It is a very effective way of adding a lot of extra calories in a non-bulky way, and as such would then be counted as Syns.

thanks Catlouise83, that makes sense.

Do you use smash for eggs and kfc or does any free instant mash work?

Hmmm so looking at this using smash as a coating would be syned as you would use more for that than you would using it as a thickener for gravy...thank you.

Smash is not designed to be used as a coating, it's designed to be made into mashed potato. Eaten as mash, it's free, eating as a coating it's a syn and a tweak.

I have smash pizza and have decided I wont syn it as long as it is part of a meal. If I stop loosing weight then I wont eat it but I am so far loosing weigh fine :) I wont try the rest of the tweaks incase I like them lol xx

Hi, just to add my two penny worth - I love making SW scotch eggs and SW KFC chicken but use my HEX B allowance for the 'breadcrumbs', either 2 x slices of w/meal bread, or I find hammering a bag of flavoured Ryvita minis makes really lovely, crunchy 'breadcrumbs'! Hope that helps! x

that's a good attitude, I am doing the same with my tweaks that are imposed by dietary restrictions, if I stop losing I will address then then :D

I think thats sensible :) at tge end of the day as long as we loose weight thats the main thing and if eating a smash pizza once ever so often stops me ordering a 16 inch pizza it is all good :) xx

Using cauliflower as a pizza base instead of smash is completely free and your getting g your super free too and its bloody lovely!

Yeah its gorgeous. I finely chop one head of a cauli, zap it in the microwave for about 5 mins, mash with a fork and add an egg. I have a proper pizza stone so I put it on there and form a pizza shape. Oven for about 10-15 mins then take out, add toppings of choice (passata, peppers, ham and hex cheese normally) and pop back in oven until golden.

I made the cauli curry once and it was revoltibg miggt give pizza a try xx

How do you make the smash pizza base? I'm intrigued.
