I feel like a failure

Hi everyone,

My name is Natasha and I am in my mid twenties. (from next week I will be in my late twenties!! eeek!) I was a chubby kid and then went on a strict no carb diet when I was 15 and became a skinny minnie. Then I went to Uni and was put on steroids and I went up to 15 stone. Over the next two years I tried every diet under the sun (WW, CD, Atkins, calorie counting, eating one meal a day, Sureslim) and managed to get down to 13.10. Then I was bullied by my in laws regarding my weight, they tried to break me and my other half up because of it, and all through that year I actually went up to 16 stone. I am now 16.2 stone and If I dont do something I will just end up being fat forever. I have put off getting married to the man I love, because I really don't want to be a fat bride. I keep telling him we'll get married when I lose all the weight. I know what you will all say- but I just can't face being a size 22 bride it would break my heart. We have been together since I was 17. Anyway, I need to finally get this weight off. Has anyone failed many times before finally succeeding? I have a lot of weight to lose. Around 6-7 stones. Can I do it? I'm going to begin Slimming world extra easy just after Christmas, as I know to do so now would be setting myself up to fail. Any words of wisdom would be appreciated. I have so much strength in other areas of my life and I am such a high achiever but food is my downfall...

Oh me! Pick me!

I have tried so many times and fallen off the wagon, I dropped 3 stone in an unhealthy manner and put it all back on when I started eating normally. YOU ABSOLUTELY CAN DO IT! Slimming world is brilliant for people like you and me, because you can actually EAT! It really does work, it's just making a few changes to your lifestyle, rather than depriving yourself of things you really want. People here are amazing and so helpful, you'll feel like you've got a great support team and you wont want to give up, trust me. Are you going to group? If you give us an idea of your favorite meals or what you eat when you're stressed/down etc then I'm sure we can give you some great recipe ideas or help.

But mainly, good luck, I'm certain that you can do it, if I can - anyone can!

I didn't want to read and not post SweetC. Firstly big ((((hugs)))! I am sure you can do this and whilst I have not done SW (only one of the few diet's I haven't tried!) it seems to work for many people as you can eat more or less anything but I guess in moderation despite the site saying unlimited xyz! Why not start now rather than wait until after Christmas? I understand if it is cost of subscribing online may be a factor but if that is the case why not try to make small changes between now and new year (though enjoy Christmas and any social events you have) but try and cut out extra portions or carbs and drink lots of water on those days. If anything that would help you maintain and not gain an additional amount over festive period.

I am by no means and expert as I have failed and tried so many times. I never quite reached goal in 2013 but I do weigh the same as I did this time last year and have on one hand maintained this weight for some time albeit using vlcd products on and off. Not ideal but I'm still working at it.

You are so young late 20's is young believe me! You have your life ahead of you and you can make the changes you need to. Don't let the in laws (to be) put you off nor anyone else. Do this for you.

I don't go to group, only on here, but there's lots of sweet things you can have, try fruit, but if you really crave chocolate then be cheeky (especially now) and buy some advent calendars, the chocolates in standard ones are 1Syn each, so a few of them wouldn't hurt you. I don't eat chocolate so can't help on that front much. Meringue nests are 3Syns each, which is great for a dessert with some Fat Free yoghurt and berries or as a treat when you really need sugar. Here's a thread with quite a few sweety things http://www.minimins.com/slimming-world/177664-slimming-world-sweet-goodies.html

Also, totally agree about starting before Christmas, because even if you put on over the festivities, you'll only be putting on what you've hopefully lost, rather than having to lose more when starting!

Me too me too!!

I've done ***counts off on fingers*** weight watchers, low gi, low carb, no carb, slim fast (for a day!), Dukan, Atkins, calorie counting, gym membership. This is, for me the most sustainable. Mainly because you can eat pretty much anything (within reason). You have 15 syns a day to use and if you have a sweet tooth use them on sweet stuff. I tend to use mine in cooking but occasionally partake in some chocolate too :)

You are not a failure. Your in-laws sound mean. I'm quite bloody minded so I'd use that as impetus to get to where I wanted to be. Then I'd refuse to let them see any future grand kids on the basis of potential mental scarring ;)

How awful of them to 'go off you' just because of your weight. How has your OH dealt with them being like this with you?

Anyway, you can only lose if YOU want to, sounds like you do so SW is a great way to change your life style and lose weight as a result. Don't get me wrong it can be difficult at times, as I know only too well, but keep plugging away and you will do great. Good Luck.

Wow! Gilly congratulations on your weight loss! I will definitely pop over on to your diary to visit! Here's me having moaned and groaned since May about this last bit I have to lose and simply not getting on with it because "I" haven't really WANTED to lose the excess weight enough.

Love that lickthelid! They have indeed been extremely mean to me. No doubt when I am skinny they will love me again, like before... *******s!

Ah - but will you love them? Will you even like them? Who could even trust someone whose love was conditional on one's appearance?

To quote Shakespeare (Sonnet 116, look it up on Google to read the rest of it):
" . . . Love is not love
Which alters when it alteration finds"

And what is your partner doing when all this bullying is going on? Supporting you? Oh, I do hope so!

Coco YOU certainly can do it. All plans work if you put the hard work in hun. You get out of them what you put in. Ive only ever tried WW and SW I used to swear by WW but it became too restrictive for me counting points. SW is brilliant and yes you can eat whatever you wish ( in moderation ie eat when your hungry not just because you can) I save my syns for a night time when I use them on chocolate etc some use them within their daily meals/foods. Its whatever works for you.

I cook everything from scratch now and the family benefit too - healthy eating and filling foods. As has been said you need to do it for YOU not because you need to prove something to the Out Laws and has also been said I hope your partner is supportive whilst all that nastiness goes on.

Good luck - minis is the right place for help, guidance and support. x

Hi. I can't believe how nasty your in-laws have been but at least you can lose the weight they will always be shallow!!!

My weight has went crazy since an accident 3 years ago and I had done some dieting but my heart was never really in it until June this year when I done CC and the gym and lost 1.5 stone in 6 weeks unfortunately I had health issues which left me off work and I put on just over half a stone again but I've tried not to let it get me down because ignoring it will just make me end up fatter!!! I decided to try WW purely as SW was too expensive for the online only and I'll be back to work after Christmas so meetings are no use. I have still been able to have a kitkat with my tea or a Chinese for dinner. I done a week as a trial to see if I could see myself doing this long term and I've not been hungry or craving anything because I'm not being denied anything.

I find the payment for the app a really good motivational tool. I'm on a pretty tight budget so if I'm paying £12 every month I need to use it!!!

I wish you the best of luck with your weight loss journey. You will have all the support you need here.

Hey coco, your in laws sound rotten!!
I know exactly how you feel, also a chubby kid..pretty much always have been and currently in my eek I suppose late twenties with weight I wish I didn't have! Trust me you can do it. I am terrible with food, I tried so many things over the years but Slimming world is the one thing that has really stuck. I've lost a lot with it, then after a break up became stupid and put on again but im back on plan again and know I can do it. Don't think of it as a diet, its just healthier eating and lifestyle. I don't feel hungry, I get to eat like a normal person just cook in a much better way.Instead of a pack of kitkats I just have one heh!
Im a total sweet tooth but I find ways around it, you get 15 syns a day to spend on naughtier things..that could be all on a kitkat, or I spread it over little things like jaffa cakes and oreos , low fat hot chocolate and crisps for example.
I hope you give it a go, Slimming world is awesome and the SW forums on here are always there when you need a hand or help!

Hey, 5 yrs ago I weighed 22 stone, I then joined ww and lost 8 stone and unfortunately couldnt seem to shift anymore weight so spent 2yrs at 14 stone.i then became ill with thyroid disease and M.E and put 2 stone back on.im now a member of slimming world and happy to say ive lost 18.5lbs.I still have 5 stone to lose but its a slow steady road to success. Keep with it hun and stay strong. The group I attend are absolutely fantastic and very very supportive xx

You definitely CAN do it! Ive tried numerous other diets too (grapefruit anyone?) but this is by far the best, its not a diet its a lifestyle change. Its much easier if you have the support of your partner and family. The guys and girls here are amazing too.
I have lost over 5 stone in 8 moths and thats with spending a month in hospital with my ill son. I ballooned after having 2 kids 14 months apart and both were complcated and took ages to recover from, I went up to a size 24 and like you thought I dont want to be a fat bride. I went shopping just the other day and bought a size 12!!! I havent done that since I was a teenager! it felt absolutely AMAZING! SW is amazing, you never have to go hungry or go without if you like sweet things there are HUNDREDS of recipes for sweet treats, the ferrero rocher are my personal favourite. Anyway best of look to you, Im sure you will do fab.x.x.

Welcome all to SW!
I have lost 7 stone & I am in my 60s so you have no excuse!
After my 2nd stroke & being told that I had 6 months to live if I carried on the way I was going, the message got through! I joined a group of 50 woman & I was the only man. I followed the slow path with no end date & now I am at my final target, my medication has been halved & my blood, Diabetic results are perfect, I can now walk for miles, climb stairs without stopping & enjoy my life!
I cook all my own food & if you follow the links below you will find them all, there are several hundred of them.......
Good luck on your journey.
