Hiya,

I've just started being treated for an overactive thyroid and amongst the other not nice symptoms I have found that my appetite has dramatically increased and I feel like my stomachs eating itself and I need to eat food good or bad but I seem to be eating mainly bad I know that I need to be eating more healthy food otherwise ill put back on all the weight I have managed to loose.

Does anyone that has an overactive thyroid or anyone that knows someone that had it have any tips on how to control the hunger?

The other symptoms including the thirst are so frustrating because they can't be controlled :( and I would like to at least try to control what goes in my mouth.

Thank You

Hi just seen your post. I had an overactive thyroid a couple of years ago and it took 18 months to regulate. Like you I had an insatiable appetite and would gorge on anything I could especially sweet things to complete excess. I was losing weight so it didn't appear important but I knew once my levels started to come down weight would go back on. I just had a good old talk to myself and with carbimazole and propranolol I started to gain some normality. It does get you down but you will get through it trust me. It's very underestimated how hyperthyroidism can cause havoc with both your physical and mental well being. Good luck and hang in there. Sorry i cant wave a magic wand. xx

Thank you for replying, it's nice to know there's someone out there, I've only started treatment far week ago today, I'm on 30mg of carbimazole and I'm hoping this helps. My mum now has an under active thyroid but hers goes up and down, years ago she had to have the radioactive iodine treatment. I'm dreading if I go under active especially because I have pcos, metabolic syndrome and endometriosis amongst other problems that makes it hard to loose weight. I thought this time doing sw I was to me really successful but I realize that it was probably in part due to being over active.

The symptoms are horrible aren't they?! The thirst, palpitations, very fast heart rate and feeling like its going to jump out your mouth, feeling like I'm pregnant again (hunger), itching, being hot, moods, restless legs and arms, lack of sleep. I think a lot of people don't realize how over or under active thyroid affects people :( Sorry to go on :(.

I noticed that you had not posted since August 2012 and was wondering whether you did finally achieve your goal weight. I too have hyperthyroid and an on carbimazole. Like you, I suddenly realised about three months after diagnosis that I could no longer stuff my face with whatever I wanted without consequences because clearly the carbimazole had slowed down my metabolism. I have started the Slimming World plan and have lost 3lb in the first week for which I am delighted about. I did do SW about 10 years ago after having my daughter and lost about 3st 7lb with it, so I know if works for me, but I was not too sure how it would work with the tablets, but clearly it does. So for anyone out there taking carbimazole, I can definitely recommend the SW diet.
