TAKING HOLIDAY DAYS..... ?

Just wondered if anyone could answer a couple of questions for me please? I've never seen the rules and regulations re: SW so I couldn't really answer this question.
A friend I've made at SW, who has been in remission from Cancer, went awhile ago for her 5 year checkup, and it was discovered that it had come back. After an operation, she had to go for Radiotherapy, which apart from making her feel dreadful, fell on our WI day. Our counsellor has made her use her "holiday" days for this (totally out of order IMO) Now our next WI day, is Boxing day so obviously our venue isn't open and it's been arranged elsewhere for the Friday, (which I myself can't make either)and my friend can't make the next 2, the first she won't even be in the area on the Friday, the second she has a hospital appointment. She informed our counsellor who told her she'd have to take 2 holiday days for this...but she has none left, so has been told she has to pay.
I don't understand this at all......if I can't make group because the place is closed and it falls on a bank holiday and the counsellor changes the day and venue, I don't see that I should have to pay because I have other committments for that day, and my friend being made to pay when she has to go to the hospital for life saving treatment, to me is absolutely ludicrous.
If anyone could tell me the actual rules and regs: concerning this, we'd both be grateful, thank you x

The club rules are usually in the back of the book but I haven't checked the latest edition I must admit. Yes normally you would have to either pay or book a holiday if you are ill or unable to attend class. Consultants do however have discretion to waive it in cases of serious illness or hospitalisation but it sounds as if your friend's one has decided not to do that. Did she actually explain to her consultant what the reason for missing class was or did she just say she couldn't go?

Yes she explained, and everyone knows she's going through a pretty bad time, but she always comes when she can make it. Our C, told her SW wouldn't "wear her having so much time off" and I quote that.
Oh I haven't seen any written rules and they haven't been explained...I never get reading past what to eat (or what not to!)
I just felt SW group is a voluntary group, it's not like HAVING to go to work, where you would get the time off for hospital appointments. It just seemed very heartless to me.
Thank you for replying x

It sounds to me from your quotation of what the consultant said, that SW wasn't actually asked - she just assumed what their reaction would be. In which case, I would suggest that your friend contacts SW head office direct,, to get a ruling from them.

Does the consultant WANT to lose members?? I wouldn't stay in a group where members were treated like that.

Good idea.

have you looked at the classes in the area you'll be in?

Sw consultants have an option to waive back fees for hospitalisation, which I feel she should use in this case. Also our meeting has been moved and my consultant told people they don't have to book a holiday if they can't make it as it has changed date. Sounds like your consultant needs a chat from you and your friend

Yeah that's pretty shoddy and I would definitely get in touch with head office. I don't attend groups but I can't imagine that in a situation such as that that the consultants approach would be condoned.

Thanks ladies, I already told my friend to contact head Office, because it just doesn't seem right. We have a lovely group of ladies, but sometimes it seems there's rules for some and not others. I'll check out myself about the different venue. Thank you all. x

I would definitely get in touch with head office, my son is ill and we have to travel once a month for him to have an operation and honestly getting to WI is the last thing on my mind. I also buy countdowns and if whatever reason he ends up in hospital or we dont know when his op is going to be so i can't book my holidays in. My consultant asked HO and they said if a situation ever occurs that I cant make it in because of his illness Just to let my consultant and HO know and they will sort it so I dont lose a week or have to pay.

I think its not very supportive of your consultant, I think its great that your friend is still dedicated to SW despite having a prime excuse for not going back. Hopefully, you will get it sorted .x.x.

hopefully that makes sense, Im enjoying the christmas spirits **hic** hehe.x.

LOLOL! Yes it makes perfect sense. I had an email from her earlier, and she's sent them a letter. I told her she should have emailed because they won't answer before Christmas. If you email them I think they ask for quite a while for you to get a reply.
I know they ask everyone to try and find another group to WI at if you can't make it to your own, but there aren't many in our area, and the majority, the venues will be closed for Christmas week, so it isn't our fault. Just doesn't make a lot of sense, thank you again x
