Sleepless night staying on track help

I was wondering if anyone else suffers with periodic insomnia, I don't very often as I usually have sleeping tablets, but I ran out and I had a lot of pain so I was up all night...

I ended up eating biscuits (carbs to shut body down) then I had a hot chocolate
then I had jelly beans to try and wake up (as it was 5am and kids would be up soon) and then sugar in my coffee to wake up

tbh I really felt like raiding the kids chocolate stash so think I did quite well...

But I wondered what other peoples insomnia slimming world survival tactics were... blimey my brain is so disconnected I don't think I could actually say that outloud lol

I sometimes get really hungry when I can't sleep but unfortunately don't manage to stay on plan at those times!
I'm afraid my not-very-healthy technique for waking myself up after a poor sleep is diet Coke, or on really bad days, diet Red Bull. Really not good for the insides!

If I can't sleep, then I read. If I need to wake myself up then a large glass of very cold water, or sugar-free squash, works.

Puzzled by two things - "carbs to shut body down"? Not sure what this means.

Also, you mention twice using sugar to wake you up. Can't see how that would work.

Carbs... you can overload your body with carbs, it can't cope with the amount and will shut down... Though after not being well this afternoon I ate porrage which might of been a better use of carbs this morning... 'Carbohydrates make tryptophan more available to the brain, which is why carbohydrate-heavy meals can make you drowsy'

Sugar releases quick release energy, but it is also burnt quickly but can just give enough to get going
Surely you know that about sugar though? its basics its why sugar can make children hyper

And I did the reading 3 hours in the bath reading, THEN I read my sewing magazines lol and I had some drinks of sugar free squash too (need it to take all my pills)

You wana live in my house #wifeswop with 4 kids n a full time job.....god I'm tired out! Might be stupid suggestion but have you tried swimming or exercise late 9-10pm? When I have it knocks me for six!

Yes, I know about the effects of carbohydrates, but I was (and still am) puzzled by the phrase "shut body down"

Yes, I am aware that sugar can give energy, but that doesn't seem to me to be the same thing as helping to wake up if one felt sleepy.

And yes, I am aware of the idea that sugar can cause hyperactivity in children - but it is a myth. There is no scientific evidence to support it.

You feel tired due to lack of energy so a burst of energy can perk you up
And shut down as in put you to sleep...

I was diagnosed with pernicious anemia and because I also have a neurological condition I have B12 shots monthly rather than every 3 months and the shots play merry hell with my sleep pattern. I wont sleep for 24 hours straight, but lack of sleep is a seizure trigger its a nightmare.

For me, firstly I try drinking to check that I am not really thirsty rather than hungry. Often our brain makes us think we're hungry when we are just dehydrated. Do you manage your 6-8 glasses of fluid a day?

If I am hungry I always have a pot of soup on so I can quickly nuke something. Though it is recommended not to eat anything 3 hours before going to bed.

On a non foody front I sleep train to try and get my schedule back.

How to Get a Good Night I also have a couple of sleep meditations on spotify that are pretty cool. Though Paul M's didn't work so much for me.

Only other thing is to speak to your GP and ask him to rule out any other underlying conditions that could be affecting your sleep.

Sweet dreams, because insomnia is a real nightmare.

Q

I have a condition which effects sleep, well it can but doesn't but if I cant sleep its due to chronic pain

The eating is comfort eating I get very depressed when I cant sleep ( start thinking how unfair living with chronic pain is lol)
