Fruit stopping us losing weight???

One of my friends got told by her consultant that she isn't losing weight because she was eating too much fruit.......anyone else heard this????

Fruit is free and super speed so i dont understand how it can be slowing the weightloss down :/

It is very high in natural sugars, although I still think you would need to be eating a truckload of the stuff every day for it to have an adverse effect on your weight loss. Snacking on fruit is a lot healthier than snacking on crisps, chocolate, etc.

Maybe there is something else her consultant has missed.

There has been a few similar discussions but fruit shouldn't be blamed for not losing weight.

As fruit is super free and a lot of fruit (but not all) is speed it should be the first thing you go to between meals as a snack etc.

Variety is important, so getting a range of fruits not just say Bananas or any one sort.

The only thing you have to make sure with fruit is that it's not eaten out of habit when your not hungry, because we should only ever eat until satisfied. I know I can eat fruit until the cows come home but I make sure that I'm not eating when I'm not hungry etc.

The other thing to remember is to eat fruit as a snack or pudding etc but there still needs to be 1/3 super free on your plate at all times.

I know it's come up in our group that people where eating a plate of free food for dinner because they would have fruit after and class that as the third super free which doesn't work.

But just fruit I between meals and as snacks I don't see how you can eat too much.

Fruit can slow your weightloss down, its more calorific than veg. I can remember the other year my brother didnt loose anything for a couple of weeks and it was down to eating to many grapes, he was eating a punnet a day, he stopped eating them for a week and lost 10lbs haha. It will depend on what fruit you eat though, i always have blueberries with my porridge in the morning and a not deal else other fruit as i find it didnt help me loose weight when i ate alot of it.

I still have the odd apple or banana but ive never had much of a sweet tooth anyway.

I eat fruit by the bucket load and find it helps me!! Not to be too crude....... But deffo keeps me regular!! Lol however, my mom has to watch her fruit intake as it slows her weight loss right down, so I guess every one is different

It depends on the person I think.

I've always been a bit of a fruit bat until recently. I know SW isn't about calories, but when I actually looked at the calories in fruit I've been eating between breakfast and lunch, it was about 350 cals! Which is the same as a meal which could be more substantial!

In terms of how it effects weight loss, I would say look at all other things first like making sure syns and hex are measured properly, that things being eaten as free are actually free and maybe then looking at how much fruit is being eaten.

It's hard to imagine fruit would slow weight loss especially super free fruit. It is meant to affect losing belly fat specifically due to the natural sugar content. My abs are a long way under there so no need to worry about that just yet!! ;)

craigA I had to stop eating grapes as they were making my teeth feel weird glad someone else was having that problem with fruit as I thought I was imagining it cos I never heard of it with anyone else before..

My mum was told the same thing when her weight loss stalled. She mentioned to the consultant that she ate a lot of fruit and was asked "do you eat it because you're hungry or because you like it?" The answer was becuase she liked it so she cut it down slightly and got to target.

The thing is we wouldnt eat chocolate/crisps/biscuits "because we liked them" and expect the weight to fall off. Just because fruit is "good for you" we think we can shovel it down willy nilly

You've hit it on the head there!

Don't forget that fruit has been modified over the years to contain more sugar! Having said that, I'm currently addicted to mango and loving every minute!!

Kinda reminds me of someone in my old group who complained loudly she wasn't losing weight and the plan didn't work. She was eating 10 mullerlights a day. 10! And would always snack on mugshots every day. I just don't believe she was hungry following her three main meals. No normal person eats ten yogurts and a side of pasta as their snacks, but she couldn't see it. I guess gorging on fruit is a similar thing

A lot of fruit have a high sugar content, apples, bananas contains 23g of sugar, most fruits are between 13g and 23g of sugar. A digestive biscuit is 16g. A Scone contains 22g. They might be healthy alternaives, however in the sugar department there not, and sugar can easily hinder weight loss.

Has it? Never heard of this before. What's it about?

I don't think LL meant modified as in genetically modified, but rather that new varieties are being bred for extra sweetness. I believe 'pink lady' apples are an example. Certainly a lot of the fruit catalogues I get (I'm an allotment gardener) keep referring to the sweetness of the different (new) varieties.

I eat lots of fruit and I find it must easia to snack on than veg. I'd much rather have an apple then sit and eat carrot sticks.

I guess it depends on what people call excessive fruit eating though??

I stick to maybe 3 pieces a day.... An example is this- I'll have blueberries with porridge, bannana mid morning and a few strawberries or raspberries with yogurt in the evening as a dessert. It's hard to not have much as I love fruit salads too....can't be that bad for you it's natural sugars, a lot better than refined sugars you'll find in biscuits and cakes.... I just don't think your meant to gorge on it when your bored for the sake of it. Mix it up a little....snack on carrot and cucumber sticks...I always have sugar free jelly made up and I find that really filling.
