Leave me alone - I'm fine!

I purposely didn't accept any social invitations for my first 5 weeks with SW as I know my own willpower level (zero!) and I knew I'd get tempted by the wrong foods and alcohol. I wanted to get myself off to a good start. It was no big deal, I caught up with a load of programmes on Catch Up and most of the time the weather was rotten and who wants to go out on a cold, wet, windy February night anyway?

So I did go out with some friends this Saturday. I was driving so no alcohol (I find it easier to abstain altogether - if I have one I want another) and also I'd had smoked salmon and ham during the day and they made me really, really thirsty so I stuck to water, which was fine for me. However, it wasn't fine for everyone else..... "Are you alright?" - "Go on, just have one drink" - "are you feeling OK?" - "come on, enjoy yourself, let me get you something different" - "are you sure you're OK?" - for heaven's sake, I'm a grown woman, I can make my own choices and I don't need to feel badgered all evening because of what I choose to drink! And let me clarify this was not a bunch of bright young things out on the town - it was middle aged people enjoying a couple of hours in a Comedy Club. I never drink when I'm driving so I would have stuck to soft drinks in any case, and I happen to have wanted water. Now it seems the "Water Police" are out on a Saturday evening - had I NOT have been driving I probably would have been worn down in the end and landed up drinking the equivalent of a bottle of wine, (or even more!) and then spent the whole of Sunday beating myself up for messing with a very good SW week.

Next time I'm wearing a sign around my neck..... "NO THANKS, I'M DRIVING. I DON'T WANT TO SABOTAGE MY WEIGHT LOSS. I LIKE WATER, PLEASE DON'T GET YOURSELF WORKED UP ABOUT IT".

Good for you ladybird. It must have been very tiresome. I have no advice for you but I just wanted to say well done for not giving in.

I agree with Peggy. Well done you!

Well done hun! Friends just don't get it sometimes. A friend of mine told me the slimming world makes me boring (all I did was turn down the offer of an ice cream!) q

Also, I think SW is irrelevant in this situation: what on earth were they thinking to encourage you to drink when you were driving!?

Good for you ladybird I know how you feel theres always someone encouraging you to eat chips with your meal or don't be so boring let your hair down etc.. stick to your guns! I didn't post anything on fb about my weightloss until 8 weeks in as think some people think god not this again shes always on a diet! I didn't drink all through jan totally my choice but like you said if you weren't driving eventually you prob would have given in just to shut them up! Don't think some people really understand how important this journey is to you but it is your journey & your choice keep up the good work :) xx

Completely agree with this!!!! Xx

Me three!

I've taken to ordering sparkling water. For some reason people seem to think this is more acceptable than tap water. Maybe it's because it looks like lemonade????

Well done, you did great sticking to your guns! When I'm on a night out and don't have a drink everyone assumes I'm pregnant(I do have 6kids), sometimes I just don't want a drink, I don't need to have an alcoholic beverage to have a good time!

Well done Ladybird on not giving in.
Apart from my slimming world group there are only 2 people in my life that know I am going. I want to keep it that way for as long as possible to avoid comments & questions etc.

It really is impossible to understand why people behave in this way. If someone I was with said they didn't want to drink anything but water, I would say OK, still or sparkling, and do you want a slice of lemon in it?

I wouldn't try to change someone's mind, or cross-question them as to why, and I certainly would never tell someone they were being boring - that's just plain rude.

In fact you had a reason, because you were driving (and I agree, who on earth tries to persuade the designated driver to drink???). but you actually don't NEED a reason - other than doing what you want to do, which should be fine with people who call themselves friends!

people tend not to do this, if you're drinking a soft drink, whether it's a diet coke, fruit juice or even a cordial. I think it's more to do with the nothingness of water. So they're checking if you're feeling too ill to drink, can't afford a drink, etc.

Good for you for not giving in to that pressure, I can't believe friends would push you into drinking when you're driving!
i always feel that people need to justify their actions so,if you're doing it then it's fine but feel more guilty about doing it if you turn it down.
in the long run you're going to feel amazing about yourself, each time you say no it will make you stronger!

this is very familiar!

you'll probably find your social circle alters a little during your sw journey. Who says its teens who suffer with peer pressure hey?

I remember long before I started SW meeting up with two old work colleagues for a few drinks. One of them wasn't drinking and when we asked why she said she was doing this diet called Slimming World and had lost nearly two stone, in fairness she looked great. That was the end of the drink comments, it was her own business what she wanted to drink! I agree with one of the posters above, I think it was the fact that it was water you were drinking, if it had been even minerals you might not have had the same response. Bringing the car is a great idea actually, you can't be tempted then, hmm, think my car is going to become my new best friend!!

I LOVE this post! Unfortunately when you go on a 'diet' some people seem to think you are their private property to lecture, point their fingers at and just generally boss about. I have so many examples of this and it really gets my goat. Here are 3!

1. IF you go out and eat anything naughty you will be told you will put all the weight on.
2. IF you go out and don't eat anything naughty you will be accused of being obsessive etc.
3. When I had my last half stone to lose it was amazing how many people suggested diets I should try when I had already lost nearly 5 stone with SW!

So I don't blame you for getting upset. And good on you for being disciplined - I too took myself in hand last September and withdrew from public life for a month to give me a boost.

keep up the good work and ignore them x
