Slow losses / annoyed :(

Hi
I'm on week 4 of going to Sw classes ( I've been doing it on and off for years though), and have only lost 4lb, I've lost that in one week before so I'm really disappointed. There is another girl in my class who joined a week after me, and she's lost half a stone, but she has more to lose. I have around 3 stone to lose.
Im getting really fed up and frustrated with it, does anyone have any advice? Maybe it just doesn't work for me anymore.
I'm doing mostly green days, having around 15 syns a day ( sometimes go a few over), and usually have around 20 extra syns after weigh in. Could this be the problem? I've always done that before on Sw and still lost.
Wondering whether to carry on with it .
Thanks x

Don't compare yourself to anyone else, and don't compare yourself now to your previous self. You are who you are now, and not like anyone else, or who you were.

Why do you say it isn't working for you, when it is? You have lost four pounds. OK, it might be a bit slow, but it is still a loss, so why give up?

If you are having extra syns, then that could very well be the problem. Having extra syns after weigh-in is something a lot of people seem to do, but it's the same as having syns at any other time - it all adds up.

Go back to the very basics would be my best suggestion. I started at around the same weight, and got stuck in a rut at about the same weight you are now too, when i went back to basics (made sure to weigh everything properly, re-read the books etc) I noticed there were things I'd gotten into the habit of doing wrong, I'd been doing it so long I'd started guesstimating cheese allowance etc and found it was over what I thought it was, all these things can hinder your losses. 4lbs in 4 weeks is still good, and if you lost 1lb every week that's about 3 stone by the end of the year.

I know it seems slow and I know it's frustrating, but slow and steady really is best, and you might have a couple of weeks with bigger losses or no loss at all, your body is weird like that - sometimes it just does it's own thing no matter what you put into it!

Are you exercising with it? I know with SW you don't have to, but I always get better losses (plus healthier in the long run) if I chuck in some Cardio!

Thanks for the replies :) I feel a bit better about it now. I'm not doing any exercise at the mo, but want to start swimming again.
I did weigh 14st 10 a few years ago, and got down to where I am now 12st 8 w/o classes, but been stuck in the 12s for ages, going up and down a few lbs. just want to get under 12 to get me going a bit .
Thanks girls x

Try not to stress too much, as I say, I was stuck in the 12's for months, beating myself up, and now I'm bloomin' stuck at 11.9! We'll shift it eventually! Everyone gets a couple of times where if just wont budge.

Thanks lamasoks, I'm going to have a look through my books again tonight and maybe plan out some new foods to try etc

At your rate of loss you will lose all the weight you are aiming to, in the space of a year.
If you made a New Years Resolution to lose 3 stone before the next Christmas, you wouldn't think it an easy challenge, so don't treat the path as a letdown.

Different people lose weight at different speeds, depending on any number of factors, so unless she's your identical twin don't even think about what she has/hasn't lost.

I think this is definitely one reason why your losses are slow. Also, as you have been an 'on/off' SWer for some years, you may well find that you're not following the plan as accurately as someone who has never done it before. When I rejoined SW for the zillionth (and final!) time, I pretended I had never followed the plan before and tried to look at it with completely fresh eyes. I think that sometiimes complacency can set in when we have done something before and you might be tweaking without realising it.

Thanks for all the replies. It's probably right that I'm being a half arsed about it, after doing it in and off for so long.
Is everyone really really strict with their syns?
It was about 10 yrs ago when I got down to my ideal (ish) weight with Sw, and was really strict with myself back then. Not so much now.
I do always have treats in the house aswell, mainly for my 6yr old son ( for me really haha).
I think I just need to get into it a bit more.

Thanks x

I am pretty strict with my syns - I usually don't go over 10 per day, and these are most often made up of recipe ingredients, dried fruit and nuts rather than chocolate, sweets and crisps. I have steady losses, with monthly (menstrual) fluctuations of between 0 and 3 lb a week. I have never averaged it out but I probably lose 1 to 1.5 lb per week. Slow and steady and I feel fantastic after doing this for 6 months.

Yes, even now at target I am strict with syns. I don't go over 15 and when I was losing weight, treated WI night like any other. I didn't see it as an excuse to have more syns.

If you are getting frustrated, it may be worth keeping a food diary to see what you have been doing and where you may be going a little off-track.

My consultant does actually warn us about areas such as tweaks (such as slimming world crisps) as they may harm your weight loss - the tweaked recipes are now no-longer considered free according to SW as they have harmed overall weight-losses for members so they do not advocate them anymore.

If you are tweaking, it may be worth taking a week or two without any tweaks to see if there is a difference.

Also, you might want to look at using Success Express to get your metabolism kick-started and decrease your calorific intake by increasing super-free foods to being 2/3 of your meal.

SAS plans are also in place if you feel that you may need to look at where you may be going wrong - if you go to group, they have a check sheet for you to go through for every day for a week which may increase your weight-losses and help you to stick to the plan so you see results you want to see when you weigh-in :)

One thing that I've learned I need to lose weight successfully is to change my mindset. People who are perpetually overweight and yo yo in their weight, have a different relationship with food than 'naturally' thin people, according to obesity research. Slim people have a relaxed approach to food, don't eat to over full or when not hungry. Don't typically eat when bored. Food is fun and nourishment. In contrast, I know it's true of me that I saw food as my friend, my comfort, happiness. Definitely a reward. Honestly, it controlled me not the other way round. Apparently people who successfully keep weight off are those who change their mindset around food, and are thus able to change their lifestyle permanently.

I've had to do this, because I realised even if I do succeed, I'll never keep weight off if I keep eating for comfort or treating food as a reward. Eventually, I'll balloon again. If I get a temptation now, I'll have a mantra in my head. " food is not a reward" or " hunger is not an emergency". So far it's working, and this is my best crack of weight loss to date.

My advice would be to not reward yourself after weigh in with food, or extra syns on other days. Us overweight people do not need extra syns! That's why we are overweight to start with. Maybe reward yourself with new bag, shoes, CD etc.

or or keep going. You're still doing really well. A pound a week is a lot. The decision has to be do you care more about the ability to have extra syns or looser synned evenings out or do you care more about speedy weight loss.

Incidentally, now you're a few stones lighter, your daily calorie needs will have shrunk by about 250 calories. That's 1750 a week. That equates to 2 pounds a month less. So you're not doing anything wrong if you can't lose 3-4 pounds like before. You're not heavy enough to burn that amount off anymore. That's good news! To lose 3 pounds a week now, you'd have to consume 800 calories a day! You'd feel awful and hungry. But 2 pounds is achievable if you tighten up palm a bit.

Good luck

Thanks Phoenix_girl and Jael, some great advice there and things to think about.
I do go to class, but I only ever stayed to group on my first day.
I do keep a food diary every day, consultant has never looked through them, but it's more for keeping a check on myself.
I do go over syns just by a few and think I'll make up for it the next day, which I usually don't.
Has anyone heard of the Jon Gabriel method? It's an e book you pay to download, and a mp3 of 'relaxation' type thing. I found the ebook really interesting, but kind of vague on actual food ideas etc.
I may try and incorporate the ideas from that into my Sw plan.
Thanks again for all the advice, I was seriously thinking of giving up (again!) on the day I wrote that, but now I'm looking forward to next weigh in

If you didn't stay to class after the first day, was there a particular reason why you don't?
(if your group isn't working for you, another session may be better if you are unsure about staying)

Sometimes group can be beneficial, even if you have gained or maintained for the week because it is the group basically picking you up, dusting you off and giving you a hug before letting you go on your way for the week.

My group is actually pretty small so we go around the room, see what people have tried this week and those who lost weight that week share anything special they did to aid their weight loss. The consultant interweaves this with other things such as any new tips and tricks and can sit down with people on a 1:1 basis if they are struggling.
I have actually learned a lot about new tips and tricks and recipes which I hadn't even considered in the past.

Near the scales are two boards, one about the excess baggage, strictly for weigh-ins and one my consultant made which struck a chord with me;
"When you have gained or maintained, you need the group. When you have lost weight, the group needs you"

After reading that, I have made the effort to stay to group even when I feel awful or dog-tired - group sessions are the giggles I need as well as the kick in the butt to keep on track and keep my eyes fixed in front of me on the path ahead.

I don't really like staying to group as it takes absolutely ages and bores me to tears tbh. The class is at 9:30 and right next to my sons school which is the only reason I go to this one.
There are other evening classes with a consultant that I really like, so I may give that one a go instead. I actually enjoyed staying to class before, but like I said this one is just for convenience, I don't actually like the consultant that much. She's nice enough, but the one I've been to before is so much better, and you can tell she actually cares about everyone individually.
May try going back to her next week.

Thanks xx
