Did you fall pregnant after losing weight??

Hi everyone,

I'm starting Slimming World today and am determined that after years and years of being obese and dieting this is IT for me, I will finally get to a healthy weight and stick to it, and if I'm really lucky hopefully achieve my long held dream of becoming a mum one way or another....

I have been overweight for my whole adult life in varying degrees, managing to lose a bit of weight here and there (at my heaviest I am ashamed to say I was 28st - now I'm 23st and have managed to keep that 5 stone off), so now I have to lose the rest of it! We have wanted a baby for so many years now and during that time I have lost 5 stone but still am very obese. After years of trying we went to see a fertility doctor and had all the tests done, we were told there is nothing wrong with either of us - we were offered IVF if i lost weight but didn't want this as i feel if my body won't allow me to fall pregnant naturally i don't want to force it. We will not give up trying yet but have had to face the heartbreaking reality (I have just turned 41) that we may never have our own child. Now we have decided that our only hope of having a family may be to adopt which would be wonderful, however to do that you need to be as healthy as you can so whatever happens i have GOT to get another 5 stone or so off if i want to be a mum, which i want so much, so i am determined this is what i am going to do. Lots of people keep saying to me "you wait, you'll get that weight off and be able to adopt but then i bet you'll fall pregnant naturally!!". But i keep thinking it will never happen now as i have wanted it for some many years BUT a little bit of me still has hope(i still ovulate normally etc and am told there is nothing wrong with me), so could it be the last bit of weight loss could produce a miracle baby? I don't dare hope, but know i have to do this either way so that if i can't have my own child i can adopt.

Just wondered if anyone else has been in a similar position, lost a lot of weight and then suddenly fell pregnant after years of trying - despite being a bit older???

I guess not as I've had hundreds of views and not one reply!! Never mind, what is to be will be, the most important thing is to lose weight and then this opens up all the options for me and if I'm meant to fall pregnant I will, If not I'd love to give a home and become a mum to a child that needed it, so onwards and upwards!!

Hi JemimaDoll
I thought id comment despite not having something definitive to say! I think to fall pregnant naturally is still doable- later motherhood is much more common in recent years, providing you're in good health, which you are aiming for! By losing weight you are increasing your chances of conceiving naturally or, if it isn't meant to be, increasing your chances of adoption! Either way, it is a win-win situation so keep going :) good luck with everything.

Not personally but my SW consultant fell pregnant after losing her weight. Can't remember how much she lost but I'm sure she said she became a mum at 41 after years of trying and then finally losing the weight. Don't give up hope. The weight loss will benefit your life in so many ways and I really hope you get that miracle baby too. Also with the new time-lapse imaging for IVF the success rates have increased massively so it may be worth not writing off IVF completely as a route to getting pregnant. Best of luck xx

I think you didn't get many initial responses due to the really specific nature of your enquiry. I can't comment specifically but wanted to wish you luck and say that whatever happens, having your body being the healthiest it can be can only benefit you in a myriad of ways. Whether you fall pregnant, adopt, use ivf you will enjoy it all the better feeling healthier and stronger.

I lost weight 2 stones and fell pregnant with my daughter whilst losing weight. We wasn't even trying either. Diet went out window when pregnant, wasn't on slimming world but wish I was.

I haven't yet this time, but it's my main goal for losing weight. When I had my Daughter, I had just lost 3 stone with WW and I'm sure that helped!

Sorry i dont have an answer for you but just wanted to wish you luck. I am trying to lose weight due to unexplained infertility too x

Hi jemima doll I just wanted to tell you that your truly amazing and going to be a great parent one way or another. I myself had problems conceiving and to be honest I was only a little over weight and not being very tall it showed ,I too decided to lose the weight to see if that would help and it did finally happen once I had lost the extra weight. :) so you go for it ! good luck! I wish you all the best .

Thank you for putting up this post as I have a few stone to lose and am hoping I may be able to conceive my second child if I lose the extra! You have an amazing attitude to the whole situation and will be an amazing mum no matter how it happens for you!

Good luck, xxx

I do wish this forum would axe the 'views' feature. It's not very helpful is it!

I definitly think loosing weight is a big factor is lots of people falling pregnant naturally and having successful pregnancies. I always suspected that i wouldn't have gotten pregnant had i not lost 5 stone prior. I fell pregnant very easy before. Having regained the weight, it is becoming increasingly obvious that this will not happen again. (trying not to be too vague, but i'm aware how public this forum is!)

Good luck. . Maybe we can buddy up!

Hi everyone,

Thanks so much for all your comments and lovely words which mean a lot! I am coming towards the end of my first week and am feeling good, hopefully lots to look forward to.... good luck and all the best to you all x

I know what you wanted to know was quire specific and I don't entirely fit into that but didn't want to read and run!

Me and my husband tried for 15 months before I eventually fell pregnant which I know isn't long in the grand scheme of things. I'm also a little younger (35). But I do credit losing weight with me eventually falling pregnant.

We saw a fertility doctor in January last year who told us that we'd struggle to conceive without IVF due to fertility issues (low sperm count) but I needed to lose 8 stone to quality on the NHS. We started taking vitamins and I carried in losing weight - I got to 5.5 stone lost and a few weeks later found out I was pregnant! Our son was born in December last year and I've put quite a bit of the weight back on but it's all worth it to have my boy <3

I really hope you can get the baby you long for, whichever way works for you. I know someone who had her first baby naturally at the age of 42 so there is always hope. Good luck! xxx

Thanks so much for your kind comments and support Missy.

I'm really hoping for a miracle baby once I get the weight off, feel I have waited forever but as they say, and you have proved with Seth Rowan 'the best things come to those that wait'! he is gorgeous! If I can't conceive we are hoping to adopt, and once again you need to be healthy and not too overweight for this which I completely understand, so I will keep going until i get my family one way or another...good luck with your goal, you can do it! x

That's the right attitude - never give up! You'll get your family, I have every confidence in you.

Thank you - diet going badly at the moment but I'm sure things will improve xxx

Hi Jemima Doll, I've been TTC for nearly 5 years, have PCOS, so we know our issues. Been on various diets over the last 10 months so I can get NHS help, I've lost 7 stones so far, with 1st 12 until a BMI of 33 so I can return to the docs! My cycle is returning with the losses but no luck falling on naturally yet. Good luck in your journey hon, we will be mummies one day, however that happens x

Hi, once diagnosed if you're TTC and not succeeding they will start you on Clomid to trigger ovulation, before further help. If you're not TTC then I'm not sure what treatment they offer and I've never had anything offered to help my symptoms (extra hair, skin tags, no periods, and so on) hope that helps x

Ah i see thanks! and as i understand it, they won't give me clomid until my bmi is under 33 right?

I see the doctor again in a fortnight, and i think a scan might be the next step. x

It depends on your NHS trust, some its 34 or under others its 30 or under, I've got an arbitrary target in mind which takes me under 34, your doc can tell you the rules for the PCT in your area. Good luck x
