SW high in fat and sugar?!

Me and my mum have been doing SW for 2 months now and each lost just under 1.5 stone. Although he eats his own breakfast and lunch as he is at work, my dad has been eating the SW tea with us and is happy with what we have. At weekends he also participates in our breakfast and lunch too. My dad has recently been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes but hasn't yet been given any tablets as they want to see how he is after 3 months of healthy eating etc. but he went to see a diabetes nurse at our doctors yesterday and he told her that he was partially following SW and that we had lost some weight on it so he was happy to continue on that plan as it is working perfectly fine. She then said that that's good for them (us) but he shouldn't be on it because it contains a lot of fat and sugar. I can't believe that she said this! Is it true? If not, why would she think that? Any input would be appreciated!
 
Healthy fats and natural sugars perhaps, but I don't see how this is a bad thing? Did he ask her to elaborate?

He's a man so no, he didn't ask her to elaborate, just nodded and said ok! All the meat we have is lean and any sugar in recipes etc is sweetener instead. We have 0% fat yoghurts and semi skimmed milk so I don't understand it either...
 
Does she know the SW plan exactly or she she assuming she knows it or mistaking it with another plan?

SW is what you make it really, what you choose to cook and eat. For example I'm on extra easy and have been cooking my meals from scratch and none of them have been high fat. The only fat used is a few sprays of fry light when needed for chicken/mince/making a sauce. All meat is lean with fat removed and the only sugar I have comes from fruit/other natural sugars as I don't add any.

Strange that she thinks it's high fat and sugar. Maybe keep a food diary and ask your Dad to keep a food diary to show her next time.
 
I think the nurse is mistaken maybe she thinks it's another plan. As there're plenty if people who follow sw with diabetes and I have read success stories where people have come of their medication due to sw
 
She's probably right. The plan usually requires some tweaking for diabetic people. They have to watch carbohydrates and fruit quantities. So just eating unlimited fruits, pasta, potatoes etc wouldn't be great for your dad. Those are the types of thing they have to restrict.

But he can tweak the plan easily. In my group we have a diabetic lady who's just adjusted the plan to suit her needs and she gets on well :) x
 
Since starting SW two things have dropped off my shopping list and I would NEVER buy them again if it weren't for having them around for friends and family - these two things are sugar and fats such as cooking oils and butter. When I started SW back in September last year I bought I small tub of lighter butter, that tub is still more than 3/4 full (hubby has full fat butter and goes through his own tubs at a much faster rate). My husband has to remind me to buy cooking oil because I never touch the bottle and only he uses it, so only he sees when it is empty. This is the lowest sugar and fat diet I have ever eaten. Any sugars I have come from natural sugars in fruit, very measured amounts of biscuits and chocolates which I allow very occasionally as my syns and any fat comes from the occasional less than lean piece of meat where the fat is not visible and therefore not easy to cut off. I think she can't possibly be talking about SW.
 
My dad joined slimming world in Oct last year after having a stroke which was likely caused by his diabetes. anyways he was on metaformin twice a day for diabetes and he is now 4 stone lighter and off all medication for diabetes. He still needs to go for 6 monthly checks but he has followed SW. They also have a diabetes supplement u can ask ur consultant for xx

My dad just had to watch he didn't over do fruit but that's about it. He is so happy he was on medication for years and wishes he had done it long ago and his diabetes nurse and GP who specialises in diabetes was thrilled he was doing SW

Thanks for all your help and advice. I'll tell him to mention it when he next goes. I'm doing SW online so don't have a consultant to ask for help or sheets etc. but we'll cope!

Sorry, but she's talking out her bumhole.

A diabetic would have to watch the fruit intake, watching things that have natural sugar in them, but to say SW has a lot of fat and sugar is ridiculous.
 
I'm a type 2 diabetic and no one has said anything to me about not doing it.. Also, I've found my sugars to be fine since I've been doing it (I've only been doing it 2 weeks so far)
I actually got referred to SW from my doctors :\ x
 
She's definitely confusing SW with something else. I also think she should 100% know what she is talking about before handing out advice. I would absolutely bring it up and ask if she knows what SW actually consists of. Everything is low fat/fat free and the only sugars are natural which can be avoided anyway.

I am type one diabetic, I have followed slimming world many times. Yes you have to be careful as a lot of fat free and as such "syn free" or low syn items do have a higher amount of sugar ie fat free yogurts etc, so you do need to look and check things more closely. As said the plan just needs to be tweaked a bit but it is a great plan. Good luck to you all :)
 
A lot of health care professionals have a thing about SW. It dates back to a survey of weight loss programmes produced by an organisation which I won't name, some years ago, which said that SW should be avoided. They referred to SW as "food combining", or a sort of Atkins. It turned out that the survey had been financed by the company which at that time owned SW's main rival! So its impartiality was questionable, at the very least.

The nurse at my surgery quoted this survey to me the other day and I set her straight. It was years ago, anyway, but it is still influencing people's opinions, especially when they haven't bothered to check for themselves.
 
A diabetic on SW diet would need to be careful with the things that contain natural sugars (fruit) and things that contain carbs that are converted in to glucose (pasta, potato's etc). A diabetic would need to be careful with these foods anyway, whichever diet they were following.

I can see kind of where she is coming from. For most people, a fruit salad for breakfast, a jacket potato with salad for lunch and pasta bolognaise for dinner would be perfectly fine on slimming world, but for a diabetic this would all cause spikes in blood sugar. As long as fruit and carbs were limited I imagine the SW diet would be great for someone who was diabetic.

However I think to just say that kind of diet is no good for him and not provide further information or explain why is very unprofessional.
 
I don't agree with the nurse saying that he shouldnt be doing it cos a guy in my group that I attend, his diabetes was really bad that he has been onlife support twice, he joined after coming along to support his wife. He has lost almost 4 stone and had to take 95 units of insulin 4 times per day, now having lost that weight he isnt taking any medication at all.
