Calories

Hi

I joined slimming world last Thursday. I've stuck to the plan. Not gone over syns etc. I've used mfp to keep track of everything that passes my lips. I've noticed though I'm eating SO many calories. Today just under 2000! That can't be good can it? Drinking plenty too.

Has anyone else counted their calories? Is this common?

Help xxxx

Hi Sarah
There was a thread on here recently, maybe last week, about logging food in mfp. From what I remember the consensus was you can't really do sw and count calories at the same time as they are two different 'diets'! Have a scroll back and see if you can find it :)
Sw is a funny thing when you first join- "how can I eat so much good food and lose weight?!"- but follow the plan- 1/3 superfree, eat only when hungry and dont forget your syns, and you'll see results :)
let us know how you get on on Thursday. I wi on Thursdays too, have joined the thread so its like being at a group lol

hey hun I started on Saturday and have been entering all my food into my app (I use my net diary) to plan my meals and my days have been coming in at around 1000-1200 so far without depriving myself! but sw isn't about calories anyway so I'd wait snd see how much you lose first before you worry ;) x

I understand it's tempting, but counting your calories is not going to help you and will only confuse the issue. The SW formula has been carefully calculated and is a tried and tested method of losing weight. Despite feeling it's impossible to eat so much and lose anything, it really does work. There are thousands and thousands of successful slimmers who will verify this. Good luck following the plan. :D

Although we don;t have to count calories, Sw is still a calorie controlled diet and if we take in more calories than we expend then we won't lose weight. I need around 2000 calories to maintain but I'm at target, and going by your stats a bit lighter (no offence intended). When we are bigger our bodies need more calories just to function so its likely that if you were to work out your daily calorie requirements you would still lose on 2000 calories. Add to this that its one day and your calorie intake will vary from day to day - some we eat more, others we eat less. So until you have evidence to the contrary eg weeks of staying the same or gaining, then I wouldn't worry about it to be honest :)

Thanks for the replies. First weigh in tomorrow and I'm nervous. I'm not optimistic I've had a loss but I'll stick it out. I counted my cals today and it was around 1300 and I'm stuffed! I've no faith lol XX

The thing is, not all calories are equal!

What I mean is...a chocolate bar that has 300 calories is not equal in any other way to a jacket potato that also has 300 calories. I'm just using these numbers as a comparison...they are not necessarily correct!

So, for a start a chocolate bar is not going to be as filling as the potato.....but not only that, the chocolate bar will have loads more fat than the potato.
And this is where SW and Calories counting differs.
Calorie counting only counts your calories....SW works out everything for you....not just the calories.

Don't mix different ways of losing weight....they all work but don't try and fuse two plans together.

This is very true however SW remains a calorie controlled diet. The free foods fill us up for longer and reduce our calorie intake as a result. But a person won't lose weight if they are taking in more calories they expend whether those calories come from chocolate or pasta.

Personally I couldn't calorie count but I do think it can be a useful tool if someone is struggling to lose and wants to find out if their portion sizes might be the reason. But I agree it's not something to worry about in this case, as I said above, until there is evidence to suggest otherwise :)

Agree with the above - do NOT worry about calories unless you get to a point when your weight loss is sticking and you can't think of anywhere you're going wrong with the plan.

2000 calories is the guideline for women who are already at a healthy weight to maintain their weight. If we are carrying excess, it requires a surprising amount more energy just to carry it all around, keep it cool, pump blood round it etc! If you're using mfp you can type in your stats and it will give you a guide of a sensible calorie intake for you if you are interested. Remember, too low isn't good for you either!

Otherwise, trust in the plan! (This isn't a cult, honest ;))

Thanks Gwella

how have you done this week? when is your WI?

I weighed in on Tuesday and had a gain which I expected. I've been faffing around a lot lately but am having a real push to stick to the plan this week and aiming for at least 2lb off so that I can get to target soon! Hence why I've got more active on Minimins again and started a diary :)

So today's calories come in at 2500, yesterday's was 1200...... Guessing it all evens out.

Well done on 5lbs that's brill! xxxx
