    Severe Anaemia and SW?

    Hi, Just diagnosed as severely anemic, seeing gp tomorrow to work out action plan. I do mostly green days, but i get that I could do with some meat. Are there any red meats that are free on red days but high in iron? Thanks xx

    If your seeing Dr tomorrow know doubt he'll put you on iron tablets.

    It's not just red meat you get iron from.
    You can get it from egg yolks,dark leafy greens,dried fruit,beans,lentils,chick peas, and of course the best thing is lots of liver.

    If you eat iron-rich foods along with foods that provide plenty of vitamin C, your body can better absorb the iron.

    I take spatone daily, it seems to work for me and doesn't taste too bad

    I had the tablets for a while but fortunately didn't get side effects.

    I've heard that a tbsp. of molasses provides half of your iron requirement each day. That's 2 syns. I'm trying to use it instead of sugar sometimes.

    Also if you have any cast iron pots, cooking with those (especially tomatoes and other acidic foods) can significantly boost your iron consumption.

    I'm pescetarian and the trouble with veggie sources of iron (leafy veg, pulses etc) is that it is harder to absorb, especially as plant foods also contain something that inhibits iron absorption.

    To boost absorption avoid milk, tea, coffee and red wine at the time when you're eating foods containing iron, and eat lots of vitamin C.

    I believe sardines are a good source too. Nice and easy to add to a salad.
    Made it to target after nearly ten months on Slimming World and now working to maintain a super healthy lifestyle.
    (Not complaining if I lose a little more but the next goal is to get fit and be happy!)

    I take iron tablets and i don't have any nasty side effects or bad taste, thankfully - mine must be coated. I'm due a blood test to see whether i still need them. Apparently, according to the doctor - it's down to my age! Cheers! Old age doesn't come alone - apparently. lol

    I just felt so nauseaous, uncontrollably so that the gp and chemist said not to take the tablets. Never felt that sick before. I am now being referred to Gastroenterology for possible malabsorbtion.
