Just wondering ...

Hi everyone - I am just starting out on my SW journey (yet again) and trying to decide whether to go back to group or just use the forums on here for my support. I find the groups demotivational if I'm honest so I hope the support of everyone on here will do it for me instead! That and not actually stuffing my face with rubbish all day long, obvs!!!

Just wondering with regard to syns, do any of you save them up for the weekends or do you all use them every day? I like a glass of wine and find it difficult to go without but that is only at the weekend so I was wondering if it is OK to "bank" my syns (a bit like WW) and use more at the weekend? You just don't get very much wine for your syns and I know what I'm like!!!

Your advice would be very gratefully received.

Thanks in anticpation

I am just doing it by myself. Having lost 4 stone with Slimming World 20 years ago, I have struggled with my weight and tried various diets ever since (soem with more success than others). Whenever I have tried going to classes/groups, I have always found that I am either demoralised when I don't do as well as others or feel bad if I do better. 9 times out of 10, because of domestic commitments, I could never stay for the actual meeting anyway so figure the money is better in my pocket (or spent on fruit and veg). Since losing the weight at SW 20 years ago, every time I have lost (and gained) weight has been purely under my own steam.

In answer to your question, I believe that you can use what are called 'flexisyns', where if you are planning a night out or a special meal or event, then you set a limit of syns for yourself (be it 100 or 200) and don't go over them. Once you reach your limit, you have only free or superfree foods for the rest of the day.

I have no idea if you can save up your syns. Personally, I don't, although I usually stick to 5-10 during the week and have 15 at the weekends. If you enjoy a glass of wine or two at the weekend, I can't see where that would hurt, especially if you are not using many syns during the week but whether it's strictly part of the plan I can't remember (I don't have my books at work with me).

If I have something at the weekend I try to stick to 5 syns during the week and use flexi syns. Say if I'm going out Saturday night I would used flexi syns (but set a limit) and try not to use syns on Saturday day and Sunday.

I think strictly speaking they don't encourage saving up your syns but some people do and if it doesn't affect your losses then I don't think it's a problem.

Yes, it's not the official line, but I save my syns and use them for wine at the weekend. It has not affected my losses so far - when and if it starts to then I will think again. To be honest, my view is that having that bottle of wine to look forward to is what helps me stay on plan.

I like your style! That makes perfect sense really when you think about it. I sometimes think I get much too bogged down with the "rules" of plans because I am striving for perfection but progress and persistence is probably much more important than perfection. Think I'll just have to see how it goes and, if it doesn't seem to be affecting my weight loss, I guess it's fine.

Thanks for all your input.
