Fybogel & Activia

Has anyone had to use fybogel while on SW? I'm doing extra easy (mostly because I can't get my head around red days!) & I have IBS. It flared up at the beginning & my GP prescribed me some lactulose. That was fab & really helped! My insides slowly got used to SW & everything was great. Then I needed some antibiotics a few weeks ago & I think it's really thrown me :( I've not had a proper poop in days! Sorry, tmi! My GP has now prescribed fybogel. I've taken 2 sachets so far & boy are they gross! Are they supposed to dissolve completely? My Mum says I'm doing it wrong, I just can't get it to fully dissolve into 150ml of water! I hope I can get this sorted soon, I feel rotten :(
I've also got some activia yogurts to help restore the bacteria balance after the antibiotics. I'm not sure if they'll help, has any one else used them? Do I need to syn them? xx

Ive been on antibiotics recently too just finished them a d had the same effect as you lol...i upped the amount of fruit mainly berries i was eating and it seems to have worked fine

Thank you all! The activia are just the normal ones, so hopefully they're free. I'll check them later :) Increasing my superfree today to see if that helps. The fybogel hasn't quite kicked in. Now I've added lactulose as well! All this from some stupid antibiotics!

I use fybogel long term and for me it's a god send, when I first started using it, it did take about a week to kick in which isn't ideal but after that it's amazin. I put mine in a pint glass of water and down it, if you leave it too long it sets on the bottom and goes quite thick. If you start taking other laxatives alongside it then the fybogel won't be able to do its job.

Thanks Rae Rae! I'm so nervous about it not working. Thankfully I'm managing to go a little, but I feel 'full' all the time :( I tried to go last night & (sorry, tmi!) It just felt like whatever was there, was too big & hard.. which is why I thought the lactulose would help :/ My GP said it should be ok as the lactulose is an osmotic laxative & just draws water from the body & puts it in the stools. I wish something would work soon, I feel awful :( I really don't want to have to stop SW because of this again. I don't want to be this weight forever! :'(

Ahhhhh ok, I've never used lactulose before but you've got the advice from your Dr :) it's the worst feelin ever, I just wanted to eat junk so could 'go' but persevered. I was on the verge of tears as I felt so uncomfortable so I know how you feel. Once it starts working though, it'll be good for you. I go pretty much daily now where as before it was once a week.

Hope it settles soon xx

I actually did that! The last 4 days, I've eaten nothing but junk & it did nothing :( Wish I hadn't now. I did call the pharmacist just to double check & they said it's ok too. The lactulose can cause diarrhoea though, whereas I'm assuming fybogel doesn't. I'm a dog walker so I can't be running to the loo! Lol. Managed to go a little again this morning. Hurrah! My GP prescribed me 60 sachets of fybogel so I think I'll just keep taking them for a little while. Do you take them all the time now? Thank you so much for your reassurance. It's really eased my mind xx

No probs, glad to help. I know how it feels when you think it's not working. At least it's starting to work for you now then the vlood gates will open, lol. Yeah I take them twice a day long term. I do worry if I'd be able to cope without them and wonder if my bowels got lazy but it does say online that its safe but next time I go the drs, think I'll memtion it xx

I think you should be ok. The only ones that should cause lazy bowel are the ones that force your muscles to work, like senna. My GP said lactulose wouldn't lead to a lazy bowel as it just absorbs water, fybogel is just a form of fibre so no different to eating a lot of scan bran :) I've been feeling a lot less sluggish since this morning! Just making sure I get enough water. It's a shame when our diets upset our bodies, but I'd rather take fybogel long term than stay at the weight I was xx

Ahhhhh thank you :) yeah if it works, don't knock it. Glad ur feelin better xx

This is an old thread, but I just wanted to add in for future info, using fybogel and lactulose together won't stop each from working. Fybogel is a bulk forming laxative and lactulose is a stool softener so together if your stools are small and hard and difficult to pass then together they should help.
I must say though I'm sorry you had to take lactulose because its horrible stuff!!! I also seem to get constipated on sw, its a real pain :(
