I love Slimming world ... but have fallen off the wagon a bit, not much, only put on 6/7 lbs or so, but know I need to get on top of it asap.

But having learnt more about aspartame and acesulfame, i`ve been looking out for it in foods (to avoid it, and have felt better for it) but it seems to be in everything slimming world allow as treats or syn free .... :( particularly the choccy options, and yogurts. :(

I thought about having Rachels Organic yogurts, but i`d have to syn them ... help ???!!!!

Talk to me about juices, and yogurts and hot choccy drinks that don`t involve crap :(

TBH I don't believe the anti aspartame hype, but if you're keen to cut it out I believe any Sainsbury's own brand diet drinks use Sucralose instead.

I know my sister feels the same way and uses 0% total Greek yogurt.

Sucralose is just as bad as Aspartame!

The Secret Dangers of Splenda, an Artificial Sweetener

There was a programme on TV about the scientific tests on aspartame which showed that the results were completely false.. Each time a rat died another would be put in it's place and they would continue as if it was the same rat.. in other words the whole of the trials were totally false.
At the time it was just before this was put on the market and I would have thought that with all that info it would have been banned but the very next week I was shocked to see that it was in the shops.
Personally I have to be very careful I do not ingest it as I become very sick, dizzy and bloated.

I love just natural 0% yogurt, either on its own or with some fruit chopped up and stirred through it - banana, raspberry, strawberry. So much nicer than the chemical stew that some flavoured yogurts are! Once you try it there is no going back.

Tesco own brand 0% fat Greek yoghurt, Total 0% and Tesco fat-free fromage frais are all free and none of them have sweeteners. Mix it up with fruit if you want some sweetness (my go-to breakfast is fromage frais and grapes, which is yummy).

I agree with CntrlC, once you've got used to it you will love it! My favourite is Total, which is absolutely wonderful, but it is expensive, and the Tesco fromage frais is a pretty close substitute.

Waitrose own brand low-fat Greek yogurt is very good and less than half the price of Total.

It isn't free, though, it is 2.9% fat, but it is so much nicer than any of the others, so I am happy to use some syns on it.

Totally agree - I love Total but usually go for the Tesco Finest 0% Greek. I have mine with fresh fruit and you soon get used to not having sweetener in it.

To be honest if we want to be healthy as well as slimmer we should eat mainly fresh, unprocessed foods anyway.

I read a post once (maybe on here) that we should concentrate on free and superfree not syn free (theres a difference). Free and superfree out of the first few pages of the book and syn free is in the syn section but with no syns (if that makes sense). When I thought about it it made total sense

It is annoying because even when we want to eat mainly wholesome, natural foods sometimes we do want a bit of a treat.

I go through phases of trying to reduce my aspartame consumption - I know the evidence is mixed but I just don't have a good feeling about the chemicals and I think it makes me more hungry.

I sometimes go for Danio yogurts - the strawberry ones are 1 syn and the others are a bit more - I think passion fruit is 1.5 and is delicious.

Sometimes I mix honey into Greek yogurt too.

I've started using molasses instead of sugar sometimes - it's full of vitamins and minerals and 1 syn for half a level tbsp.

Treat-wise I prefer to just go for small versions of the usual things, like a Freddo, or the odd proper Mars Bar on occasion. I've even got into eating little bits of dark chocolate which is something I never thought I would do!

As I say, I don't believe the stories, so it matters not to me :)

I personally do believe it. But then I avoid all processed foods wherever possible anyway. It's no coincidence that diseases such as cancer and diabetes have increased the more crap we fill our food with. So I'm with you. Go as natural as possible. I don't care if I have to syn something as long as it's a more natural food. At least I know what's going in my body

Unless you are one of the rare people who has an issue breaking down aspartame there isnt anything to worry about it. It's the most tested food product on the planet. Not only has the US FDA found the product safe, its european counterparts have done the same.

Pure conspiracy moon howling.

Good post you are proof SW works for everyone

Y'see my issue with sweetener isnt about the safety of it (though I believe we shouldnt eat so much "false" stuff). Its more how it makes your body react. When you eat sugar your body reacts bu producing insulin, when you eat artificial sweetener your body "thinks" its sugar (its clever your body but not THAT clever to know the difference) so it produces the insulin then theres no sugar for it to work on - so it makes you crave sugar as it needs it

I'm sure a bit of artificial sweetener wont harm most people (or their weight loss) but I shudder when I hear of how much diet coke people guzzle because its "free" or loads of Muller Lights etc

Just my thoughts
