What to eat at a DAY festival (no camping facilities!)

Hi everyone, I'm new to posting here but I have been lurking and stalking all of your posts for a few weeks now I've found the answers to most of the queries that I've had by doing this and therefore, I haven't needed to ask any questions...until now!

    I've been doing Slimming World for a few weeks now and been getting on OK. These are my stats so far;

    Start date 30/7/2014 - 204lbs (I'm only 5' 1"!!)

    Week 1: -5lb
    Week 2: -1lb
    Week 3: -2lb
    Week 4: STS

    Week 5: -2lb
Total loss so far = 10lbs

My big goal is that I want to wear a bikini when I go on holiday in October. It will be the first time I have worn one since my eldest daughter was born 17 YEARS AGO!! hahaha

I usually find it very hard to lose weight, and I have previously had to cut out whole food groups (carbs etc) to get any results, but of course it all piles back on when you start eating it again. So I'm really pleased that SW is working for me and although I've reduced my carb intake slightly, I haven't cut anything out. The only thing I have cut out is sugary desserts or snacks, except for the odd one if my syns allows it. I have been eating mostly unprocessed foods and feel much better that I did before I started.

BUT I'm going to V Festival in a couple of weeks and we are not camping, we are staying in a local Travelodge. So there won't be any facilities to cook
when I'm in the festival or even in the hotel room (except a kettle). I've found a few useful threads about camping/festivals but all of them are mostly involving hot water or cooking facilities.

    Help!! What do I eat??

I really don't want to fall off the wagon this early! It's also my sister's birthday shortly after the festival AND my birthday at the end of the month, so if I let go of my resolve at all, that will be another excuse to not get back on the wagon again and I'm FED UP with being overweight.

Any advice/ideas would be really appreciated.

    Hiya,

I know how you feel as I'm going to lake fest this coming weekend.

I am doing a couple of very low cal days in preparation as I know come the weekend I'll be eyeing up the stonebaked pizza :-(

Usually at festivals there are some healthier options though. Avoid the greasy burger van, pie stand and gloopy sweet and sour with spring roll and go for the veggie pasta in tomato sauce, noodles with chicken or prawn, veggie burger in a brown roll etc

I'm going to limit my beer intake as well and try to stick to wine :-)

The kettle can be your friend, though they're not particularly healthy, mug shots are great for when you only have a kettle and no other option!! Keep in mind that if there are restaurants and cafes near you, you can still get healthy food, even if it's not totally SW friendly - if you're eating out in the evenings there are a ton of places you can go and get a meal that fits the plan, low syn or even free if you do it right!. Lighter option packed sarnies can fit in with the SW plan if you plan it carefully, and you can take alpen bars etc with you, anything that's grab and go.
What restaurants are there near the hotel, have you looked?

When me and my mum went to a blues festival, we went to a stall that provided rice and peas for separet dishes. We asked for them together and there was no problem. Yeah, not superfree but you could buy a fruit pot from somewhere on way back to travel lodge? Just look at what they sell at each stand...you could get peas from one and rice from another I know it sounds very boring...but at the same time you do not feel like you are missing out.

Travelodges tend to be near places to eat - is there a Little Chef or similar on site? If so, you can get something like a warm chicken and bacon salad (ask for dressing on the side) and add a jacket potato if you want something more substantial or if you're not keen on salad what about gammon with peas and a JP (add a few Syns for any oil used in cooking). Sometimes there is a M&S Simply Food on site, in which case you can buy a prepared salad and add cooked meat or fish and/or some cheese if you haven't had your HExA.

You could take a plastic box with a measured amount of breakfast cereal in and a carton of UHT milk for your breakfast. Add some banana or any other easily portable fruit for Superfree and that's breakfast sorted! It's easy to rinse the box out but I would advise throwing away any milk that's left and having a different carton for each morning. If you might want to take a measuring guide if you want to be really accurate about HExAs!

(Oh, and take cutlery and plates; you can easily wash them if not using disposable ones).

Above all, enjoy yourself and consider allowing yourself a few extra Syns if you really want them.

Try sticking to the noodle stalls, they have loads of healthier options there. I went to Glastonbury and managed to lose 3lbs and all I ate was noodles and drank water. Most of that was probably down to walking (and dancing ) though. They do have stalls at V Festival that sell fruit too.

For those who have never been to a festival I doubt very much melt71 will get the opportunity to go looking for food off site other than breakfast. The music goes on until late and by the time you have walked to car/taxi or whatever to get to hotel it's likely to be midnight before getting to the travel lodge. Food will need to be from the food stall on site.

melt - don't worry. Festival food has come a long way. V is a pretty big festival with loads of food options and you are bound to find plenty that is sensible as well as tasty :-)

I'll report back after my festival this weekend as I think V is a the weekend after?

Thanks very much for all of your replies!

I feel MUCH better now and will look for the rice/noodles/vegan/fruit stalls. I didn't think of Jacket potatoes so that is another option. Restaurants and even take aways are not going to be an option for us near to the hotel for lunch/dinner because by the time we get there (it only finishes at 11pm and then we'll be stuck in traffic for a while, so probably after 12.30am) they will all be closed. We will have a cooked SW friendly breakfast on the Saturday morning and hopefully that should keep me going for a while I'm sure on Sunday morning we'll be able to find somewhere to do a breakfast near to the hotel before we go into the festival.

Yes please Jules, I would love to hear how you got on at your festival with regards to food

I think you've already had some great advice so I won't add too much. I went to the Isle of Wight festival in June (I love to dance in a field!) and there will definitely be some JP / rice / noodle stands at V. Avoid the burgers, pizzas etc and stick to the places where you can actually see what's in the meals.

Or do what I did and dance so much you forget about food! We had a massive breakfast everyday and took a couple of Alpen light bars in but other than that I didn't eat too much because I was so excited.

    Have a great time!

I'm a bit jealous. We used to go to V every year, but not been for a few years now. Killers will be great. I saw them at V a few years ago - what a great night :-)

The festival I'm off to will be a bit quieter. We bought the tickets for my brother, sister in law, niece and nephew for Christmas and it's the kids first ever festival. It's quite family orientated so will be a change of scenery but I'm sure we will all have a great time. taking the caravan too so no need to camp and at least my breakfast will be healthy. The other meals I'm just gonna relax and enjoy myself but within reason. I've worked too hard for my first stone to wreck it all now. I love festival food :-)

Ok, I'm back from my festival.

I admit it I was really naughty and ate loads of bad stuff, but it was nice to let my hair down and enjoy myself. I did put 2lb on but as I had lost extra last week in preparation I'm not too upset.

I had pizza and cake and beer and nachos

The healthier options on the food side were noodles, chilli and a lovely sri Lankan stall with lamb wraps .. yummy

Now I'm back on the wagon having jacket spud and cottage cheese for lunch :-P

Thanks for all of your help! I managed to survive on water, alpen light bars and chicken and noodles which was delicious (my daughter had a pizza and it was absolutely disgusting apparently and hubby had a burger which wasn't great either, so I didn't feel like I was missing out at all, the noodles were the best thing there!).

I lost 2lbs that week even though it was my sister's birthday as well so I was really pleased. I am trying not to miss out on the fun, but at the same time making healthier choices so that i can stay on plan.

It's my birthday this week and I ate CAKE! but other than that I've not veered too much off plan, so even if I don't lose this week, I'm getting right back on track next week (which starts on Monday for me).

Now I've done one festival, I feel much more confident about being about to figure out what to eat in any 'unplanned' setting (ie where I can't control or prepare the food beforehand). It means that I feel better when I eat out as well, which had been bothering me before.

In terms of V Festival, they wouldn't even let us take bottles of water in, but I managed to sneak in a couple of Alpen light bars!!! Such a rebel

Congrats to those of you that still lost even though you were going to festivals, it's not easy but definitely can be done.

Glad you had a good time. My friend went to the Telford one and said it was good.

We had pizza at Milton Keynes bowl when we went to see the Foo Fighters a few years ago. It was blatantly a Tesco value one that tasted awful and they charged a stupid price for!
