Idiots in the Gym and general weirdness

The purpose of this thread is to share any weird experiences you have had in the Gym.
Maybe you encountered some idiots on machines, people slacking, the showers being really open, maybe the lockers do not have their own locks and you have to bring your own?

I'll start with my weird experiences.

My current Gym does not have locks on the lockers so I realised that I had to buy a combination padlock so I could safely store my belongings.

Yesterday, I went to the gym and two women were sat on the mats used for stretching out laughing at me because I was sweating during my Cardio circuit and stuffing their faces with chocolates! Normally, I have my iPod and wouldn't have even heard the raucous laughter over my music however I forgot my iPod and my earphones so I had to put up with the music channels they have on the TV's in the Gym.
When I realised that I was being laughed at, I felt really self-conscious despite having the attitude of "if you aren't out of breath doing Cardio, you aren't pushing yourself hard enough." and "If you don't sweat working out, you're not working out properly" I was really fighting the urge to cry and run away so I went to one of the machines which I max the stack out on and find a little too easy. The smile rapidly disappeared from their faces but I still felt terrible so I went to the lower level and did some dips and some chin-ups. Whenever I do those, I normally walk around like I own the place, LOL!

who goes to the gym to eat chocolate?! what weirdos!!! Well done you for sticking it out and not running - I would have wanted to! Whats the point in cardio if you arent sweating and out of breath?!

My least favourite people in the gym are "Yes all the machines are free, but I'm going to sit on the one next to you and constantly look at your screen and attempt to beat you" people. BORE OFF!

Oh dear, what a shame to have your gym experience spoiled. Are you sure they were laughing 'at' you though? perhaps they were laughing at their situation...sitting eating chocolates while they watch someone working out hard?
Anyway, don't let it put you off.

Girls (and maybe some boys, each to their own!) that go to the gym with their hair done and a face full of makeup. And then finish looking no different whatsoever. What's the point? I agree - if you're not sweating whilst working out, you're not doing it right!!

I hate that too!!! That happens all the time in my gym. I like to think I'm there to give people a confidence boost as I am usually super slow ;)

I have to stick up for these people as I am one sometimes!!

I go to the gym after work occasionally and have my hair done and make up on from that day. Sometimes I'm just going to stetch/foam roll or for an easy jog to stretch my legs so I'm not out of breath or sweaty but it still plays an important role in my training programme! x

Ahaha, it was more aimed at the girl who used to go to the same Saturday / Sunday morning BodyCombat class as I did and would always come in with her hair perfectly straightened / tied up in some pretty way. And a face full of makeup / false eyelashes as if she was going on a night out. Or maybe that was it - maybe she had come straight from her Friday / Saturday night out? Lol. It just makes me laugh, especially as Combat is definitely supposed to be a sweaty, out of breath type class x

Did she not move during the class? How do you go to a class and not sweat?!?! She must have been amazingly fit!!

If I remember rightly she used to spend the majority of the class getting in other peoples way and thinking she owned the place. And looking at herself in the mirrored walls!

People like that put me off going back to classes. I can't get a good workout in when they're in the way. I appreciate classes get busy, and fair enough if you're going to push yourself and make the most of the hour. But if you're just going to stand there faffing on it gets a bit annoying x

Aw you can't let that put you off. The health benefits and the way it makes you feel when you've completed a class and achieved something way outweigh stuff like that I think.

You have to just put people like that out of your mind sometimes. If you're concentrating and focused on what you're doing, you'll probably not even notice them! x

I appreciate that, but it's hard to focus when you have someone banging and clattering into you every five minutes. Anyway, I'm hijacking the thread a little here which wasn't my intention. I was just posting my opinion on what personally annoys me at the gym. I'll let someone else have a turn now! x

bloody hell, I once went to body combat and came out looking like I'd had a shower! I know I know, sooo sexy...:banana dancer::banana dancer:

I agree, there is nothing like the smell of sweat to enhance the taste of chocolate perhaps? :8855:

Oh god, this makes me laugh so much. The guys in my Gym who are seriously into weights do this, they end up shadowing me on some of the machines, especially on the leg machines and the back machines trying to demonstrate that they have more strength in those muscle groups than myself and then trying to lift what I had and not even being able to move the pads! :8855:

I had to wear a seatbelt on one of the back machines yesterday as I'm lifting nearly my entire bodyweight and there is a serious risk of me pinging off about 20 foot away onto the floor. Felt like the strangest thing ever.

The machine I used to wipe the smiles off those ladies faces ends up with a stack twice as much as I weigh, it's crazy! :p

Well done to you for sticking it out and ignoring them! Honestly, I would have burst into tears as I am badly self conscious! I've had 3 girls laughing at me before a few years ago at the gym and I managed to stick my headphones in and finish my workout but I had to leave - We had a hairdressers in that gym and they were from the salon, they were awful girls, (I worked in a different part of that gym also so the worst part is i knew who they were) they would be so rude to me when I was working and I was on a cross trainer and they were on treadmills behind me just laughing :(

I haven't had it yet in the new gym I am at but I don't tend to train on my own yet as I'm terrified of getting anxiety :( a funny thing is though, there are girls at my gym who come in in their bright pink sports bras, tummy out and they wear push up bras underneath, all tanned up, tummy out and hair/makeup done and they move from the same machine, so one treadmill, then they move to another if a bloke turns up. Me and my sister think that's a bit funny :D But if that's what they want to do I let them be lol :p

Oh that's awful! Why do people insist on being A**hats to people when they are in the Gym?
You go in there with zero makeup and maybe messy hair to sweat, not strut around a pose like a damn peacock!
Well done for keeping going though, it's all too tempting to jack it in and make an exit fairly quickly but you will waste so much time and miss so many opportunities if you do :(

I know what you mean about the self-consciousness, I end up doing my workouts as efficiently as possible so I can slink off to the showers and drive away :p

Funnily enough, I have noticed many more Gyms now making rules about people being appropriately covered up, no stomach out etc. so it can minimise any awkwardness.

My Gym doesn't enforce a rule such as that though, there was a guy who was a complete cliche wearing a vest or working out and it looked like a throwback from an 80's boyband pop video.
Only problem was, said guy had terrible body odour and was a massive 70's stereotype so he absolutely reeked of curry (I'll let you extrapolate which stereotype I was referring to) and it made me so sad as I thought those stereotypes no longer exist :(

Mine is people who can't stay away from their phones! This morning I was on the rowing machine and a lady next to me was texting and on a social networking site I can't name at the same time, I didn't even think that was possible?! One hand on her phone, one hand pulling. Credit to her though, I couldn't do it lol

Also I hate the mirrors in front of the treadmills, I don't want to see my flabby bits wobbling around for the whole duration of a workout! Also it makes such awkward eye contact at times!!

I remember a gym I was at about 8 years ago had new weight machines that were done with air pressure rather than weights. There were 2 light bulbs in the ceiling and you were supposed to use a machine while the green light was on (30 seconds) then when the red light came on (for 5 seconds) move on to the next one. There was only me and one other girl using them (about 16 machines in total) and we were sort of 8 machines apart. But she wasnt following the light bulbs and I was getting all peed off thinking "I'm going to catch her up soon".

But shes now one of my best friends so I must have forgave her lol

Wow, that sounds very modern.

Most of the machines I use are cabled or belted for resistance and then you have the standard cross-trainer, treadmill, rowing machine and stair masters.
To be fair, we do have variants on some of them, two cross-trainers in the Gym can also change the incline. I had a go on one and it was just too much for my legs in the latter part of my Cardio circuit so I use the standard ones.

Am I the only one who goes to a Gym where the machines have a personal fan on them to cool you down?
Generally use it as a reward for getting through each session on the machines and run through the three settings depending on where I am through that part of my workout :p

We have fans on our machines too haha I love it! I get so hot so quickly they're great!

ugh I wish ours had fans! I'd feel like Beyonce hahaha

I hate this, there are girls in my gym that come in looking perfect, go on each cardio machine for 2 minutes on no resistance them leave after about 10 minutes looking smug!

My pet hate in the gym is when girls come in in 2's and will only use machines if they can get next to each other and glare at you if you are in the way!

The other week I forgot my headphones and had to listen to two women either side of me talking cr*p about how people that went to a certain school and lived in a certain area were the lowest of the low and would never amount to anything. ...I went to that school and lived in that area and just wanted to slap them! !!!
