Rebounding: Body Magic for everyone

Rebounding is a workout on a mini trampoline, and I'm a massive, massive fan. I think it's one of those exercises that's overlooked and underappreciated, so in the interests of body magic I thought I'd write a post on it.

Lots of us have a lot of weight to lose when we first start SW and body magic seems a big ask. Lots of us also have a health reason why exercise is difficult, often related to our weight...asthma, bad back, sore joints, dodgy ankles, old injuries.

When I started SW I was 19st 1lb with a knee that was severely damaged in a car accident and can't cope with impact, and an ankle that randomly gives way when it feels like it. That meant swimming was my only real exercise option (I thought), until I discovered rebounding. The trampoline, or rebounder, absorbs the impact instead of your joints. It's a great combination of being both gentle on your body, while being intense enough to tone and calorie burn.

When I started all I could do was a gentle repetitive bounce where my feet didn't leave the surface, I could keep that up, just about, for 7 minutes. Now I do 4 x 30min cardio workouts a week and never have a complaint from my knee.

I can do it at home with my music plugged in or in front of a rebounding workout DVD. I don't have to face, or find time for, the dreaded gym, or squeeze myself into a swimming costume.

It also has a whole host of "who knew?" health benefits, there's a great article on it here: http://wellnessmama.com/13915/rebounding-benefits/

Lastly, but so important for me as I get bored, is that it's so much fun! I just love bouncing around to music :)

So if you think you can't, please beg, borrow or steal a rebounder and have a go. I promise you'll love it, and you'll soon be looking for a rebounder of your own :)

thanks for this info.

id love to be free and fit enough to run like phoebe from friends.

lol

Me too lol :)

I'm gonna unashamedly bump this up because I think so many people could benefit from rebounding :)

Did you know that, if you have a lot to lose, incorporating moderate exercise so that you don't lose lean muscle as well as fat on your diet journey is one of the best ways of making sure you don't end up with loose skin?

Thanks for this interesting topic, can i ask do you think a thirty pound one from argos will do the trick.
I usually walk for my excercise but i now have bad hips and will probably need hip replacement, thought the rebounder might be
a good way to keep excercising.
Would ask my dr first before purchasing.
Fingers crossed.

Hi Kaitlyn Marie

I think rebounding would be a great way of keeping moving even if you just do a gentle bounce/walk workout :) Definitely get your doctors advice first though.

As with many things you get what you pay for. A rebounder with too hard a surface, or inferior springs (or even worse bungee ropes) as some of the cheap ones have can give you to hard or soft a bounce to be effective. Urban Rebounder are about the best ones out there but way too expensive for me. I use the cheapest one I could find that had good professional reviews, the Reebok Rebounder, it was about £50. HTH :)

Many thanks for your helpful reply, about £50.00 would be okay, will add it to OH Birthday list to me ha ha.
Will just wait now for my xray results and chat with Drs, again thank you for your time and help.
Kaitlyn Marie. x

Pink I'm also tied to the house once my small boy is in bed (oh the joys of single parent hood) so rebounding is a great way of being able to work out at home in the evening :)

I originally came across it when I was looking for low impact/high intensity exercise I could do at home because I just couldn't find time to swim around full time job and mummy duties :)

Are there any DVDs for this? I walk but have to push my 3minth old an the looks I get when I do a small gentle jog with her pram well. Also thought about a treadmill but it's storing it

I'm going to Argos to get one but feel I may need the help of my partner to fix it together for me know what I'm doing in the morning

I've taken different elements from YouTube videos over the last couple of years and put them together in my own routine now, it takes just over half an hour, and I do it 4 times a week and sometimes 5 (depending on how energetic I feel on a sunday!).

I work out to music and have a regular playlist that varies the pace for me, and changing what I'm doing every 4-5 minutes stops me getting bored and makes the time pass quickly :)

Here's what I do:

4 mins 'walking' at slow pace to warm up
4 mins jogging at fast pace
4 mins walking at fast pace
5 mins walking and upper body work out with 1.5K hand weights (one in each hand)
5 mins jogging at slow pace with 0.5K ankle weights (one on each ankle)
4 mins jumping jacks
4 mins jogging at fast pace
2-3 mins walking to cool down

there are Youtube videos (try the Becky White ones on the link I posted above) which show you good techniques for walking and jogging :)

Think I will have to watch the videos first to get the hang of it as I'm terrible with co ordination my feet just never seem to follow lol

I've got one of those trampette things in the garage (along with a weighted hula hoop and various other exercise stuff). Might give it a go as before I just bounced with no music and it was pretty boring!! This looks better
