    Which diet am I actually going to stick to!! Help Desperatly needed

    Hi - apologies in advance for length.
    I have had problems with my weight for years now- I am hypothyroid and was undiagnosed for a long time and one of the consequences of that was getting to 17 stone. I lost 3 stone with WW and then plateaued for quite a while so switched to SW and got down to 11.5 st. Again a huge plateau and switched to Calorie counting got to 11st and then stayed there. I wasn't too unhappy about that and got a bit complacent with weighing everything so crept back up to 12 st then to 13 and there I stayed whether I was dieting or not!!

    I have always had IBS and this has got very severe over the years (to the extent they talked about removing my large intestine completely ) and I was referred to a new consultant 2 years ago who put me on a restricted diet which has helped a lot in some ways but I have now got some other issues instead!!

    Even though the restrictions wont have caused weight gain I have shot up to 14st6 and am getting nowhere fast and flitting from one diet to another trying to get results and keep within restrictions
    Its been topped off by an admission to hospital last week and I have really got to get a handle on my weight.
    The restrictions are;
    Only white bread /pasta rice etc; no veg or fruit apart from potatoes and carrots without skins; no pulses; no sweeteners; no cereal except rice krispies. no crispbreads or anything made with wholemeal flour.
    meat and fish and dairy are all ok
    I am now starting to introduce foods but have to stay away from high fibre, currently I have introduced tomatoes and onions for sauces and a small amount of salad.

    I was at my best weight wise eating clean and low GI but that was high fibre in the main so hard to stick to now.

    so the big question is which diet? I know Cal counting should be the obvious one but I am sick of weighing every last morsal and keep getting tempted by SW and WW. LCHF is out because I the last hospital visit was liver related so it has to stay low fat.

    thanks to anybody that has got this far and I welcome being told to get a grip and do the obvious.

    I do think you need to be realistic - calorie counting is probably the only thing that is going to work for you right now, with your restrictions. WW and SW both want you to incorporate high fibre foods, as they are filling, and naturally help you to eat less food.
    Have the hospital not referred you to a dietician? I would have thought if they are restricting your diet that much, you should be entitled to specialist help with your diet, so that you can still try and get all the vitamins and minerals that you need in your diet. If not, I would speak to your GP/consultant about it.

    I won't tell you to get a grip etc. Losing weight is a hard battle that many of us have to face. We need to make changes that we stick to for life, not temporary ones in the form of a diet. This is the mistake that most of us make when trying to lose weight - we make drastic changes that just aren't sustainable!

    In your case, I think you need to put your health first, and do whatever your Dr's are advising you to do. You're probably not going to lose that much weight if you're sick. Get the scales back out, and count calories.

    thank you Hayley, sorry for not replying sooner I didn't get a notification

    I think you are right, even though I really fancy SW, Calories counting is the only option. I'm mad at myself as I've got a wardrobe of clothes I cant get on because I have let the weight get out of hand again, before it was because of my thyroid being undiagnosed but I haven't got that excuse now.

    there is no dietician support just a list of what's allowed and advice to take multi vitamins if you feel you need to!! I am due to see the consultant tomorrow but I chickened out of asking (moaning) about my weight gain last time (6 months ago) as the Dr I saw was bigger than me but its going on faster instead of creeping on so I will have to bite the bullet tomorrow
