    Syns in Seitan

    Hello,

Does anyone know if Seitan is free to eat like tofu and quorn? For example a tin of mock duck?

It's a veggie subsitute made of gluten free wheat...

    Many Thanks

As a protein source, seitan contains about 31 grams of protein per 4 ounce serving (which means it has more plant protein per serving than tofu), provides a modest amount of B vitamins and iron and contains no saturated fat or cholesterol. A 3 1/2 ounce (100 gram) serving contains 118 calories, 18% protein and less than 1% unsaturated fat.

found this info on google and entered details into SW Syn calculator and says

Free per package/portion on Extra Easy
    Free per package/portion on Green
    Free per package/portion on Original

    Bumping a really old thread!

I'm curious about this in relation to the current setup of the plan - would it still class as being syn-free? The nutritional info I've found online indicates that seitan is lower-calorie and fat than tofu whilst being richer in protein.

I'm also very curious about soy protein powder. I have some of the chocolate flavoured powder from Holland and Barrett which works out at 6 syns a scoop on the calculator. Is there a way of getting Slimming World HQ to verify true syn values?

If the nutritional information of the product hasn't changed, then there is no reason why the syn value would have
The powder will have no free food allowance so will be a straightforward 1 syn for every 20 cals-there is no need to have to get slimming world to verify this-as it's the calculation that they use themselves for any item with no free food allowance. HTH

This is a REALLY old thread, I know but am bumping it in case anyone finds it via google. Granovita Mock Duck is a free food and I am in conversation with my own consultant as the basic ingredient for it, the wheat gluten is very high in syns if you look at it on the syns calculator. I would like to know how to treat home made seitan, another vegan friend uses it as a free food and seems to be losing OK with it.
Mini Summer Target: To get to at least 15.7 by the 24th of September. This is 14lbs to go, at least 2lbs a week. WI dates: 12.08: 1lb lost 19.08(binge) 26.08 (still bingeing a bit) 02.09 recovery 09.09 2lbs off 16.09 23.09

My ultimate goal is to have a healthy relationship with food and to be strong and slender for the rest of my life, through compassionate eating and being in tune with my needs.

Homemade seitan is free if made without oil etc I use the Seitan Fix Mix from vegan store online, and then add in vegetable stock, herbs, soy sauce etc and I usually steam my seitan but it's not as good as the mock duck. The tins of mock meats found in the Chinese supermarkets are also free (mock duck/pork/chicken)

Have you got that officially from SW? I'm hassling my consultant about this and lack of support for vegan members, specifically regarding our staple foods.

No but I don't feel the need to do that - if you put the information through the syns calculator and select meat subsititute as your free food (which it is) then it comes out as free. I've lost just over 4st on SW eating all these things so it doesn't hinder your losses

Great news, thanks. I hadn't seen meat substitute as a free food option, I had looked up the nutritional values for vital wheat gluten and put them through the calculator, this then came out at around (from memory) 18.5 syns per 100g.

Yeah it would 'cause of the no free food allowance thing on certain products and without this selected you get the straight 20 cal = 1 syn rule I hope that helped anyway!
