Aldi vs Lidl

Thinking of changing my supermarket from tesco to either aldi or lidl but not sure which one! Also I know with tesco exactly what I want that's syn free and also know syn value of most things! Can anyone help with what to get from both shops that's syn free and low syn! Tesco is far too expensive for me know and need to find cheaper brands with syn values that are the same! I used to get mullers but wouldn't know which brand to get etc! Any help and advice will be very much appreciated xxx

Not sure I can really help because I don't shop in either. However, father-in-law swears by Aldi fruit & veg. He says it's generally cheaper and lasts longer than others.

That's quite funny because I find it's the opposite. I've stopped buying Aldi veg because I find it goes off a lot quicker than Asda so it works out to be a false economy. I do buy some things at Lidl - their vine tomatoes are always good as are their baby plum tomatoes.

Ive started buying more stuff at the corner shop, especially fresh herbs, lemons and some fruit & veg. I always buy my spices and stuff there anyway.

Theres loads of Polish / Asian / African shops etc not far away and their fruit & veg is outrageously cheap compared to Tesco et al. Yeah it doesn't last so long, but you only have to pop to the end of the road / on the bus every 2 or 3 days for what you need that night. Its costs 3 or 4 times this much in tesco and tbh Tesco stuff usually tastes of nothing anyway :( And it keeps them in business. One day there will ONLY be Tesco and then they really will charge WHATEVER they like :(

I'm quite lucky in that I live in an area with an Aldi, Lidl, Tesco and Sainsburys all close together.

I used to shop in Tesco every week and get it delivered, then I moved to doing a massive shop on pay week and popping into Tesco when I needed fresh things. I worked out I was spending an awful amount of money there, however, on not a lot of food!

So now I shop at Aldi for most of my shopping, Lidl for any offers that are sw friendly (they have 4 packs of Branston baked beans for 99p sometimes and do meat offers every weekend) and then look on mysupermarket for offers on things I can't get anywhere else like Babybell, mullerlights or fibre plus bars. This works out significantly cheaper.

Aldi have something called 'Super 6' running all the time which is 6 different fruit or vegetables for a cheaper price. At the moment it's new potatoes, sweet potatoes, lemons, blueberries, funsize apples and I think oranges for 69p each. I find their fruit and veg lasts for ages and it's so much cheaper compared to the main supermarkets.

I don't know the aldi equivalent of mullerlights because I still get mullers but from wherever they're on offer. At the moment they're 10 for £3 at Sainsburys - they're nearly always on offer somewhere!

Sorry to ramble!

It is funny I was thinking in the same line and was going to start a thread about it but you beat me to it.

I buy most of my things from Aldi & Lidl - fruit & veg, bacon, cheese, eggs, cereal bars, free range chicken, canned tomatoes, baked beans, olive oil, frozen veg, frozen fruits and all my cleaning stuff, shower gel, shampoo/conditioner, toothpaste, deoderant. After if I walk in one of the other supermarkets I think oh my god why are they so expensive.

Mind I go to supermarkets from time to time when they have offers like Morrisson had 8 muller for £2. Tesco with Laughing Cow & phily on offer.

When I go to visit my parents I pop into ASDA and buy meat from Asian butchers in there as it is very clean and good quality(I am fussy about meat and would not buy it from Asian shops). Also visit Turkish/Asian/Polish shops and get exotic and fresh food & veg.

I shopped in Tesco yesterday morning, where I normally shop, and was astonished at the lack of British meat available, and what was British was priced at a premium.

On the way home, I realised I had forgotten Bananas, so called into Aldi to get some.

I do occassionally pop in there, but only like for something that I have forgotten etc., but yesterday, I had a good look around, and their fruit and veg was definately good looking and a lot cheaper, and I also have to say, that the vast majority of the meat was British too!

Thankyou all! Well I popped into lidl last night! I think I found it a great struggle and I found myself 'lost' in knowing what to get! Any way I didn't spend much and ended up popping to morrisons to get my baby's milk!

Lidl had passata a big carton for 59p think it's double the size of tesco 500g so that was good but things like beans, chop toms and a few other cans worked out the same price as the 'value' range in tesco and morrisons! Fruit was also cheap which was good!

Think I may try aldi next week but either way I will still need to pop to tesco or morrisons to get the baby bits and then think to myself can I be bothered to go around various shops?! I hate shopping at the best of time!

Another thought I had was because I'm at target I'm going to start getting lean meats etc and spend a few syns on that to maintain my weight as I'm constantly losing ! So hopefully that will help both maintaining and also saving the pennies x
