Does less syns = more weight loss?

I am so determined to keep my syns as low as possible at the moment. Obviously if I really want something with a syn value I will have it but at the moment I am SO focused and want to do my absolute best, so have been opting for free snacks etc.

I have heard people say that if you don't have enough syns you won't lose weight as fast. But surely that's just because they are more likely to fall off the wagon and pig out? Surely my body is happier without any extra crap in my diet?!

What have you found in your own experiences? Does anyone else feel the same way as me about syns? I almost feel as though I'm sabotaging myself if I have the full 15!! (Although there are days when I completely blow syns values out the water, so then feel I need to compensate on the days when I don't have that temptation.)

Although it seems that syns are just there for treats, that's not the only way they help on the plan. Take fats, your body needs a certain amount of fats to function correctly and most of the fat we get on SW is via syns. For example some vitamins like A, E and K are fat soluble and need some fat in your diet for them to be absorbed by the body. You may lose weight a little faster by cutting out syns but your overall health would suffer. SW don't put syns in the plan because they want us to be less successful, they're there for a reason. My consultant has said that time and again they see better weight losses from members who use their syns and I think that part of that is that we function (and feel) better with a balanced diet which includes a small amount of fats and sugars.

Ah ok, yes that does make a lot of sense. Thank you! :D

I think I'll try to use my syns on healthy fats like nuts and avocados etc and see how I get on :) Although I will definitely treat myself of a packet of Pops today having had this explained to me! :)

Syns don't have to mean crap! Butter, oil, avocado (my favourite syns). really good quality chocolate, nuts, seeds, flour or cornflour for thickening, sauces, proper mayonnaise, real home-made gravy (the kind that has never seen a stock cube or a granule!) - think of really good quality things which for you, make your meals tastier.

That's some great ideas for using syns!:D Butter, oil and avocado are my favourite syns too! Definitely need to be making better use of them.

I also really need to buy some good quality dark chocolate, so good for you!

Thanks for the tips :)

I used to make a lovely chicken gravy (don't cook much any more). Back in the day when a roasting chicken used to come with its giblets inside in a little bag, I would put them in a saucepan with the wingtips and simmer with a small piece of onion until thoroughly cooked. These days I would perhaps buy a small pack of chicken wings. I would drain the stock and cool it a bit and skim off the fat. The bits and pieces were then a treat for the cats!

Then when the roast chicken was cooked, I would take it out and let it rest for a while, pour off most, but not all, of the chicken fat, add a little flour and stir, scraping up all the tasty bits from the bottom of the pan. Pop back on the heat, then slowly add the chicken stock and stir until thickened. Simmer for a while. A little bit of gravy browning if it looked too pale (although I wasn't bothered by that). Season, that's it really.

Jamie Oliver has a fantastic recipe for chicken gravy. Saw it once in one of his television programmes. Took a while, but you could make loads and freeze it. I expect you could find it if you Googled a bit.

For beef stock I would buy beef bones, brown them in the oven with onion and carrot and celery, then simmer for a while. Not sure you can buy beef bones any more!
