How Does A VLCD Work?

A vlcd like CD/LT/LL is designed to safely maximize the 'calorie gap' this is the difference between the calories you use and the calories you eat. It provides appropriate amounts of all the essential nutrients your body needs each day in a minimum number of calories.

The average person uses up about 2000 calories energy each day so the difference between energy used up and energy eaten means that the body's reserve stores of sugar and fat are drawn on to meet the body's needs.

In this way body weight is lost.

You are not actually living on reduced calories, you are only changing the place the calories come from.

The body, when not dieting, uses mostly sugar for energy rather than fat. The sugar content of the diet is kept deliberately low so that the body's own sugar stores get used up quickly. Fat then becomes the major source of energy.

Ketosis:

When fat is burned rapidly, the body produces substances from the fat called 'ketones' and the person is said to be in 'ketosis'. The mild ketosis produced by the diet formula has a number of advantages for dieters: hunger is reduced and a feeling of well-being is often experience.

Ketones can be detected in the urine of dieters and provides encouragement than body fat is being burned. Ketones can sometimes be detected on the breath. This is only temporary and can be reduced by adequate water intake and mouth rinsing with a mouthwash (i.e. Oraldene, Listerine)

Because the low sugar level of the diet is critical to maintain ketosis, it is very important not to eat or drink anything else, apart from your daily serving of formula and approved drinks - even a nibble of apple, raw vegetables, milk in tea or coffee or merely a diet beverage may make you feel very hungry and you may find it very difficult to carry on.

Love Mini xxx

Us Lucky chaps have an even bigger deficiit as we need 2,500 kcals per day. I reckon this is one reason that men lose faster.

Hi Judi.

It's low carb that brings about ketosis rather than low calorie

Diet: LighterLife
Ketosis is a state rather than a diet. Ketosis occure when you reduce the carbohydrates in your diet (Starches and sugars prevalent in processed foode, rice, bread, pasta, vegetables, fruit, milk etc.) to a level that they do not provide enough energy for you. Your body then has to burn its stored fat as a fuel. The fat cells are converted to blood sugar (glucose) and the remainder of the cell that is not needed is passed (through urine, breath etc.) as ketones - hence the term ketosis. This is a natural body state and it has a great side effect in that it engenders feelings of well-being and reduces hunger drastically for most people.

Hi mikey
Thank you for your reply, I really appreciate it. I have about 20 - 30 kls to lose. Do you have a food guide or an outline of what I need to do to start? Its quite funny I have always been really fit and active. But I got and injury about 9 years ago that prevented me for alot of exercise and then when my last child was born we had a emergency c section which went a bit pear shaped. Lucky me I then fell on my knee and it has taken about two years to heal. So this is the biggest i ever want to be I am really eager to know what to do next.

Many thanks Judi

Diet: LighterLife
Well if you serach VLCD on google you will get an idea, but to be nutritionally complete at below 800 kcals is quite difficult so most of the diets are based around food packs - soups and shakes mainly that you buy.

Cambridge Diet is probably the cheapest, but you get group counselling with Lighterlife which is why I chose LighterLife.
