Things have to change!!

Hi all,

Ok, I'm not going to beat around the bush!! I've dabbled on this forum for a couple of years. Chopping and changing from one diet too another. This needs to stop!! I just need to eat less and move more. No measuring, no counting, no sticking to silly rules that don't relate to normal people. I just need to stick to basic healthy eating and balance.

General rules (not crazy rules) I'm going to stick to:

1. Plan my meals and snacks in advance

2. I don't need sweets, chocolate, cakes and fried food to live so these should be eaten rarely (special occasions!!)

4. Exercise 3-4 times a week

5. "What would Jo do??" The most important influence on my diet was my old dietician who tried to help but unfortunately I didn't take her advice. Her advice now rings in my ears and I know having her as my inner voice will help.

Any advice along the way much appreciated!!

Day 1

I'm going out to dinner today for my friends birthday. Not a great day to start but actually I need to start seeing this as a life change rather than something I do when I have no plans.

Ok, so my plan this morning was to go to gym for 9am. I've got an irritating cough which kept me awake last night. I even moved to the spare room do my OH could sleep.

I'm lying here this morning and the last thing I want to do is go to the gym. I am trying to rationalise it by saying that maybe early morning isn't my time for going to the gym. I generally do prefer exercising later in the day.

Am I making excuses or is it a valid point to consider when is the best time to exercise for me. Am I weak willed or just being pragmatic?

So, day 1 of my diary and I'm not going to tell you what I've eaten as it's been a weird day. We went out at lunch for my friends birthday and it turned into a Sunday afternoon drinking session. Very enjoyable!!

This is a normal part of life as long as it's not every week. I enjoyed myself and that's all that counts.

I went shopping this morning and now have a good supply of green veg, fruit and leans meats.

Wish me luck for this week!

Day 2

Off work today. Just out of bed with a plan to go to the gym this afternoon.

I've started to day with 2 crumpets and low fat spread. I was going to have a yoghurt as well, but actually not that hungry so I have decided to have it later if I need it.

Good luck. I'd love to lose weight that way! So difficult, but if you manage I definitely believe its the best way to maintain long term. You've go the attitude so I'm sure you'll succeed! Look forward to seeing how you do xxx

Day 2

Just had lunch. I've had to eat early so I can fit the gym in before an appt this afternoon.

Gym target - 3km on treadmill, 10mins on cross trainer, 10mins on rowing machine and then a relaxing swim.

Lunch - Half a carton of fresh soup, 1x Wholemeal pitta, small portion of cheddar cheese with chutney and salad.

I feel quite satisfied. Tried to eat slow and enjoy it! My plan is to snack on fruit this afternoon (banana, apple and some grapes).

Fajitas with loads of salad for tea.

Thanks Allie,

Any advice on what I'm eating much appreciated,

Starting 184lbs

Im not sure Im the person to advise you. I keep doing VLCDs because my food choices are so bad, lol! But maintaining a reasonable weight on normal food is my ultimate goal. Your plan really inspired me, I really hope you do it xxx

Sorry pressed wrong button!!

As I was saying, really effective but taught me nothing about normal eating.

So end of day 2 and I beat my gym target. Very pleased. Changed my evening meal to Moroccan lamb with quinoa and chickpeas. Very tasty!!

Finished my day with a chocolate rice cake and coffee.

Overall a good day!!

I agree that VLCDs have not been a long term answer for me either. I'm using it to kick start but then want to do something similar to you..

Well done for today, a great success!

Thanks Allie, a more challenging day today as I'm back in work. Think today feels more like a maintenance day rather than a weightloss day but not going to over analyse as it's been a controlled day rather than a binge.

Breakfast - 2 crumpets with low fat margarine and an Activia Yoghurt

Snack - Banana and small Cappucino

Lunch - Ham Salad Baguette and 1/2 bowl of soup.

Snack - Cereal Bar

Dinner - Chicken Fajitas (2.5 wraps) with salad

Snack - Coffee with some blueberries.

Exercise - 3.5 km run

Successes - planned to have 2 wraps for tea, only had an extra half rather than just blowing it which I felt like doing. Really enjoyed my run and can definitely see an improvement in fitness.

Learns - ask for no butter in my baguette as didn't need it. Change Cereal Bar for more fruit instead.

Day 4

A nervous day ahead!!

Starting a new job (promotion) and I'm spending the day with one of the business directors. I get so nervous with people above me in the hierarchy. Always think they are better than me and I'm going to make a fool of myself. Need to try and remember he is just a person like me and he's not superhuman - I think!!

I had a small glass if orange juice before I left the house. Now it's Breakfast on the train - peanut butter on toast, made at home. Flat white coffee.

Wish me luck!

Starting 184lbs

Had a great day in my new job! Lots of new people to meet. Very friendly but I'm tired now! Just waiting for the train home. Not been in complete control of food today.

Snack - flapjack and coffee

Lunch - buffet style food (one plate, no pudding)

Exercise - heading out for a run when I get home

Starting 184lbs

Not been a great end to the week. I think Thursday knocked me off course and I lost focus. Won't go into what I've eaten but cake and chips have featured, plus wine.

Fresh start tomorrow, renewed focus!!

Starting 184lbs

Reminder of my rules:

Plan eating

No rubbish

What would Jo say??

Only three things to remember.

Let's start again tomorrow. .....

Starting 184lbs

Breakfast - bowl of fruit and fibre, glass of orange juice.

Exercise - 8km hike.

Snack - 2 oat biscuits and half tea cake. (During the walk)

Lunch - mackerel salad with granary bread, blueberries.

Starting - 211lbs Current - 184lbs

Dinner - baked potato, pork and broccoli, yoghurt.

Snacks - hands on the cookie jar I'm afraid.

This is so hard!! If I'm not on a specific diet then I am a mess. I can't stay focused. I'm so used to being on a structured diet like WW of SW. I know that this new approach is right for sustained weight loss but need to stay focused.

Sensible, healthy eating with exercise. That's all!! Why is this sooooo hard!!

Starting - 211lbs Current - 184lbs
