hi everyone.....so its been a week and ive started personal training, the trainer has given me a low carb plan to follow. Ive been working out for a week but nothing major hes started off with gentle exercise but a few days in and i had lost 5lb and lost 2.5 inches from my waist. As the week went by I have gained a few pounds and my body feels very heavy and my face is all puffy (i can usually tell ive lost weight as the shape in my face changes) Ive not cheated and followed the plan but dont understand why I have gained weight even though im hardly eating much compared to what i was before. Has anyone else experienced this?

You might not be eating enough - without seeing your actual diet I couldn't possibly tell. But it sounds like you might be retaining water.

Hi moonlight,

Well I'm having a small steak for breakfast or two eggs.
Lunch is chicken and a few veg (not many)
Then my meal is chicken or fish and veg
And then when I'm training I have protein shake after workout and having lots of water.
I feel as though I might have a urine infection as I'm drinking lots but not going to the toilet as much or I get an urgency to go but it's not as much as I think it will be.
But it's been a week lost three inches from my waist, one from my thighs, one from my arms....

Yes there's something wrong if you're drinking a lot but not going to the loo - in general on a low carb diet youre on the loo non stop at first!

You're going to have to talk to your trainer as its his diet - if you were following Atkins I'd say you're not eating enough calories or enough fat - unless you're adding lots of oil and butter in cooking and using fatty cuts of steak and chicken with the skin on.

Simply at the calorie level it sounds like youre eating (I can't be sure without knowing quantities so I'm thinking of average portion sizes) you shouldn't be gaining weight. I'd definitely suspect water retention.

It's also worth mentioning that when you exercise your body retains water to heal your muscles so there will often be a little gain due to that.

It can show up anywhere - I notice it in my face and ankles. Obviously we're not doctors here do maybe it's best to ask your trainer about it?

I will be speaking to him, tanks moonlight. My face is puffy and when I take off my sock my ankles are always swollen but I though that was because I'm just sitting down all day.
Well I measure my waist yesterday and lost 4inches in total in two weeks so I guess I'm doing something right ;-)
