Half marathon training

Sorry for the delay in setting this up :)

This thread is for anyone wanting to train for a half marathon.
My first half marathon is at Silverstone in March, then going to do the Great North Run in September.
I am going to do 2 runs in the week at 10k, then a longer run at the w/e, which will increase each week.
My first long run will be next w/e.

Love it! Sounds great. :DI look forward to reading about your progress and sharing tips. Well done and thanks for starting this thread x

I'll join in :) Although i'll be training for my second half marathon which should be april/may next year.

I have a 10k race coming up on the 6th november so that's priority right now :)

Good luck everyone x

That's great Summer, you can give us lots of advice, lol

You'll have highs & lows, good runs & 'bad' runs but that feeling you have when running the actual race will defo make all the pain, tears & struggles 100% worth it :)

Summergurl, you have done amazing, well done!!

Shazza, I am signing up for the Silverstone too so will be joining you in the half marathon training :)

That's great Coach :)

Me too me too - also the Silverstone half marathon.

My plan is far wussier than Shazzabir's though. I'm thinking:
1 x 5k run as fast as I can (currently 28 mins)
1 x 40 min run
1 x 60 min/10k run. This run I will progressively (and slowly no doubt) build up.

I think the above is realistic for me for now. I will then start upping the longer run more significantly after Christmas, and hopefully get in another 40/45 min run too each week.

From a weight point of view I'd really love to shed a stone and a half between now and Christmas, and make a good inroads into a further stone by Silverstone. We'll see.

Good luck everyone, and thanks for the tips Summer!

The one thing I found when training for the 1/2 was that my weight never budged. I was mindful of what I ate but never lost anything significant and quite alot of people experience the same so don't let that get you down if that happens :) x

I wonder why that happens, as you burn loads of cals running. So far it's been the running that has been the main factor to my weight loss. Guess I'm lucky I'm almost at goal.
Thanks for your comments Summer, really appreciated :)

Fantastic that you have signed up Pinkie!!
That sounds a good plan :)

Thought I'd join the thread though not sure when I'll be doing a half marathon. Don't think Silverstone is realistic for me. x

That's great Jools. How r u doing now? Did the race go ok?

Jools, you're at the same place as me with your running and I'm going for it!!! I have just entered so had better get on with some training!!!

Thanks. I'm ok. Physio is suggesting a full "muscle/joint physical" so he can assess my strengths & weaknesses before I get back to any proper training. I guess it's a good idea so I don't incur the same injury again but it's a little annoying as I'm virtually back at the start of C25K training for now. :( I guess it's possible after I've seen him things may progress a little quicker but I'll have to wait & see. I've now got some sort of cold thing though so he's saying I should shift that before seeing him. :sigh:

The race was good thanks, we had a great time though it was a lot warmer & hillier than any of us expected!! x :D

Not right now I'm not! :sigh: If there's no closing date for applications I will keep it in mind though so don't worry. If I can do it I will. x :D

Morning all!

Summergurl - I am logged on to my PC and can see all your achievements - what can I say? That is absolutely fantastic - really pleased for you - and you look like an entirely different woman. Well done hun!

I did a 40 min run this morning (covered 4.2 miles) so I'm fairly pleased with that. I'm still fairly snotty from that horrible cold last weekend. Next up is a 5k on Monday, gotta try and beat my previous best of 28 mins. Sunday is my day to try and get some cycling in - I'm going on a long cycle ride in a few weeks time (84 miles) so I need all the practice I can get!

BTW - I am going to send my Garmin back. Sodding thing - it doesn't pick up the satellite properly, so it's just a glorified stop watch. I can use my phone for that (which I have with me anyway for chooooons). I'm really disappointed :-(

So how many of us actually are heading for Silverstone next March? I ran around the perimeter roads last July when the Superbikes were on (I went on at 07:30 when the circuit opened) - it was so lovely seeing people getting ready for the day etc, seeing some of the riders out on the track running themselves. That is my true reason for doing it - I just want to run on the track as I'm a superbike racing (observe not do) geek. :)

I might nearer the time depending on how my training goes. x

Ah thanks pinkie!
You're doing great with your runs, alot faster than me - a 5k in 28mins is brilliant :)

I'd love to be able to do the silverstone but it's too far from where I live :( boo!x
