Interval training DVD... Will my body get used to it?! Will it become pointless?

Hello all!!

Im wondering if anyone can give me some advice on my exersize?

I have basically been doing the Josie interval training DVD for a month, each week increasing to the next level out of 3 and doing 20 minutes of toning exercizes with a medicine ball and a yoga ball.

I am now on level three and I believe it is working... However now I'm at level 3 I'm concerned that my body will get used to the level 3 work out. Would it make sense to change it up and go onto level 1 for a week, then 2 for a week and then 3 for a week? Or would this not be sufficient enough in change? I find each level difficult in its own way.

If someone could give me some advice that would be excellent!!

Iv lost 5 stone nearly and want to keep loosing and start toning etc, but I'm really not an exercise person. Now iv found a DVD that is hard on all levels but I'm enjoying I am scared to change but equally don't want to do pointless workouts.

Many thanks for anything you can advise me on!!!

Can I just say thank you for responding!! Iv been really struggling this week and not having any comments back has been hard as iv no idea whether im actually doing anything! So thank you I'm really grateful!

So what if decided to do, is do level 3 for 3 weeks, then (and now) level 1 for a week, then back to level 3 for 2 weeks and then level 2 for a week and back to 3 for two weeks an so on.. If that makes sense?

As much as the DVD says the levels are more intense the higher they are, I actually find level 1 and 2 harder (as in I ache more after) and level 3 makes me more out of breath - so hopefully they are doin different things for me?

Iv since upped my calorie intake an have lost on average 2lb a week (more than before :) so happy happy!).

Thank you again! Any help offered feels so personal and helpful! X

Hi there - I haven't seen much on here about Josie's DVD - I expect people haven't replied as they just don't know the answer. I have been looking as well as I bought the DVD early this year and so far have done one session at level one. Finding it hard to find the motivation at the moment so well done to you for keeping it up.

I think mixing it up is good as I imagine the exercises are different at each level and it is good to do the range - also stops you getting bored. I did stick to the 30 day shred when I did it before Christmas but did find towards the end of each level it was getting a bit samey. I bought Josie's one for a change but really need to commit to it properly.

I found level one a bit slow to start with when I did it - lots of long explanations. Does that get better with levels 2 and 3?

Hi Sarah

you haven't replied to me now! I shall try not to be so angry though :)

I have just done level 2 and found it quite good but again quite slow through the first circuit. How are you getting on with swapping them round? I am thinking of doing a mixture of this and the 30 day shred again plus some of my 10 minute solution dvds. However it is so lovely outside finally that it would be better to walk up and down hills while it lasts.

Well... I think they are quite slow through the first circuit however i quite like that as they allow me to get my breath lol!!

Yes well iv just done a week back on level one and I think I'm going to go back to level three tomorrow for two weeks and then onto two for a week, before level three for two weeks again.

Hopefully it works!! If not, I'll have to try something else. Finding it hard still though!! How you going?! X

That sounds like a good plan to me. How many times are you doing it per week? I have literally done it twice in 3 months but am feeling more motivated now so planning to go for 3 -4 times a week from now on but not sure whether to stick to this one only for a bit before mixing it up a bit.

When you say you think it is working do you mean you are losing weight faster, losing inches, looking more toned or finding the dvd easier? I am a bit sceptical about Josie's weight loss pictures - I wonder if the original bikini one was photoshopped - she does look amazing in the DVD though and interval training is meant to be the best exercise for weight loss. Personally I think diet is much more important for weight loss but I do think exercise is important in itself as well.

Well ive been on Cambridge diet and had lost 4.5stone... Then started the DVD and STS in weight for 3 weeks which was really annoying and I wanted to give up. But apparently muscle weighs more... Then I upped my calorie intake by 200cals and lost 4lb then 3lb and then 1lb so generally more than I was loosing on cambridge without exercise.

I'm defo toning more - like my arms are clearly more defined. And I feel a lot more fit physically. Like when I teach (I'm a drama teacher in a secondary school) I'm defo more energetic.. But I don't know if I'm loosing more weight really.

Have you changed diet or anything?! What's the other interval training DVD you have? X

I always find that when I start exercising I don't lose well for a bit - apparently it has to do with retaining fluid to repair muscles rather than immediate muscle gain. Well done - that all sounds amazing.

I was on Slimming World and lost 2 1/2 stone or so quite gradually since last April. I am now trying to develop a healthy relationship with food via a book called beyond temptation which has principles in it similar to Paul Mckenna ie eating when hungry, stopping when satisfied, eating food you like etc.

I see from your stats you are well under goal - you have done so well. Are you intending to keep going on down? I have really struggled with maintenence since January hence my new plan.

My other DVD that I mentioned is called the 30 day shred. Like the 30ss there are three levels and the idea is that you do each one 10 times (and daily although that is really a marketing ploy as it isn't good to exercise the same muscles two days in a row). It doesn't sell itself as interval training although there are 2 minute cardio bits in it that are quite hard work. I would say it is a bit harder than 30ss and certainly faster moving. It is also supposed to be a 20 minute work out but actually each level is closer to 30 minutes.

If you don't mind me asking... What did you find hard most about maintenance? Just I'm scared that I'll too start struggling!! At the moment I'm in a place where I'm so scared about putting weight on I don't deviate at all from plan - in fact I very rarely change food at all (same break, lunch and dinner every day!!) just so I don't gain but I know I can't continue that!! So I'm really scared...!

I don't plan to loose anymore - having said that I know deep down I would like the scales at my weigh in to drop slightly each week! It's all a mental game I think - slightly addictive.

That's good that you lost that weight - well done!! How's the new plan going? You finding it ok?

It is all psychological. I said to myself "now I am at target I'll just eat this and that". And with sw you are allowed to put on 3 lb so then 3 lb above target was ok. Also I was quite pleased with 9st 8lb even though it wax 4 lb over target so I couldn't get motivated to stick to plan.

I am finding beyond temptation good but hard. I am enjoying all the high syn food but struggling not to spend the day grazing even on super free food. I tried Paul McKenna in the past but prefer this method as it is more personal - I have observed myself and responded to what I have found.

There were lots of target members in my sw group who found a balance and stayed in range. They kept on with the plan and were very inspiring. I don't know if I can keep up that level of discipline indefinitely.

I have done level 3 today - as you say more breathless with this one. In answer to your first question I don't think it will be come pointless - if you stop you will gradually lose condition. But it will become easier as you go on and you might want to try some other things too.

Ahh well done on level 3 - I had my weigh in today and despite religiously sticking to plan with food and continuing to work out (but back to level 1) I have gained 2lb.

I feel absolutely rubbish and like all my hard work has been pointless - cant figure out whether it's because iv gone back to L1 and it's not hard enough so iv put on weight (despite only having 1000 cals a day :-( ) or whether maybe where I was using heavier weights, my muscles were retaining water... If I had gone off food plan if understand but I haven't :-(

Are you aching after L3 or just breathless (warm up is a blooming killer!!)

Thanks for all your support by the way

Yes the warm up was a killer - lactic acid build up before you even start. Not really achy but then I have gone for very light weights. I also can no where near do the sit up things at the speed they do them.

sometimes you just do gain weight for no reason and then lose all the more the next week. Could it be star week? (slimming world euphemism for time of the month). Another sw thing they might say is are you eating enough? Not sure of the logic there but they do say you need to eat enough to lose weight. Maybe something to do with starvation mode. Keep at it - the worst reaction is to give up after one disappointing week.

Unfortunately I am unable to comment on it being ladies week as I haven't had a period since Christmas - doctors are putting that down to weight loss. But maybe it could be reappearing and that could have made me gain.

It's ridiculously de-motivating. Like I literally cried on my consultant just at the fact that I'd put on 2lb - yet ive stuck religiously to plan. Grrr so annoying!

Yes I know - warm up literally kills me! The v-ups/sit ups I start as soon as iv finished the previous 30 second interval and that gives me long enough to get through all 10. By the time iv got to ten , so have they even though iv had an extra 10 seconds or so!! But they kill.

I also struggle to keep up with the round the clock lunges and I found my keys caved in this morning. Hard work ey!!

X
