Gym tips/advice for a newbie

Hi everyone, I joined the gym yesterday and plan to go properly on Tuesday. I have been the gym before, but to be honest it lasted 2 days and that included 5 minutes on a treadmill each time :rolleyes:

Anyway, that was a few years a go now and this time I feel very up for it and excited. I'm just wondering if anyone has any advice/tips for a newbie? What to avoid/what to wear/what to use ect ect.

Thanks! :)

hi tink,

have you had an induction at the gym? They might help you put together a program to work to. ...

I go the gym but am limited on when because of work and my daughter. ... I tend to do a lot of cardio at the gym. ..I push myself to my max and am a sweaty mess within minutes of arriving but feel like I've really benefited from it.

Then on my non gym days I do more toning exercises at home.

As for what to wear. .. whatever your comfortable in. ... Don't wear tight clothes if you will feel self conscious in them. a well fitting bra that gives lots of support is a must!

Make sure you take a bottle of water. ... and I always listen to my own music so headphones and your music player. ... forgot mine today and had to listen to the most whiney judgemental women in there....I nearly moved machines they were annoying me so much! !!!

Ah thanks for this, I have a sports bra to wear so hopefully that'll give me the best support. :)
I'm just doing a playlist on my iPod at the moment.

Get an induction, staff in the gym should be able to make u up a workout programme. Concentrate on resistance training, use the free weights. the variety of exercise u can do will keep u interested, plus endless hours of cardio gets really boring really fast.

Well I've been going for almost 2 weeks now, and I love it! I'm quite an anxious person and I was worrying about people laughing at me but nobody even looks, they're all too busy doing their own thing.
I have to say though, my weight loss has stalled.. not lost anything in 3 weeks but I can tell I have lost weight, it's just not showing on the scales yet! x

Well done, it's the same at my gym, you feel really self conscious at first then realise that no one else is interested in what you look like our what you're up to!

Your stall in losses will be down to an increase in muscle, muscle takes less room than fat hence your shrinking size but unfortunately weighs a bit more!

focus on non scale victories such as looser clothes and improved fitness and you'll soon see the benefit x
