I cant make up my mind whether to do Slimming world again or calorie counting. In your opinion what do you think is best to fit around a family. When i dont Slimming World before i was only cooking for me and my son but now i have his dad to cook for too so not sure whats best to follow.

Last time on slimming world i nearly lost 4 stone which is why i'm probably more inclined to go down that route.

Hi munchie11.
I am not as familiar with slimming world but I did weight watchers and found it didnt suit me so I downloaded my fitness pal on my phone and am calorie counting and find it alot easier that way. Its just portion control I have to get used to but I am getting better at it.
It will probably be a case of giving one of them a try and see how it works for you.

I've done both. I found SW was good but expensive (meetings, extra lean mince, mullers) so now calorie counting

Having recently gone from calorie counting using MFP to slimming world, I would definitely recommend slimming world. I think it definitely encourages healthier eating as it's so much more controlled - calorie counting for me ends up with me prioritising treats tbh whereas as they're limited on SW I get so much more fruit and veg in every day.
I like not having the faff of weighing every morsel I put in my mouth too :) x

Programs like slimming world and Weight Watchers are basically calorie counting programs in disguise. You can save a lot of money and increase your knowledge if you just count calories. Get a digital food scale and a program like My Fitness Pal or Fitday to keep track. You'll learn a lot about yourself in a month.

I think everyone is aware that all programs are based on the basic premise of calorie counting. However they all use the calorie intake differently and that is the crucial thing for people trying to lose weight - it has to work for you and fit into your lifestyle. If it was as easy as setting a calorie limit and weighing your food then no one would be overweight to start with.

If you dont need support join sw get the books and skedaddle :) its fab, easy and effective

I'm doing both SW going to group but also calorie counting on MFP because it's easy to think that free foods are unlimited but they still have a calorie value so keeping track of calories while using SW principles makes me eat more fruit and veg and less pasta and potatoes - it works for me anyway!

Good luck with whatever you decide

I find Myfitnesspal fantastic. Very similar to Weight Watchers online tool system but it's free!

i love my fitness pal and off cause on here would cry without you lot x x

I was doing Sw but found that I just wasn't motivated at times and felt restricted by how many syns I was allowed. I use the syns for cooking like sauces etc so I downloaded my fitness pal and this is my 1st week using it and I feel free. I'm still eating healthy and tracking everything.

Why don't you try it for a week and see how you find it?

I was going to create a thread that was identical to this, and then I found yours! I'm swithering between Slimming World and calorie counting - on one hand, I like the simplicity of Slimming World, and not having to weigh everything, but at the same time I'm very limited in terms of what I can eat. That's not strictly true, but I don't have the time/inclination/money to purchase the 100s of ingredients that seem to form the basis of most SW meals. I live on my own, and I think I'm erring more on the side of calorie counting, because then I can make stirfrys using packets of sauces, and eat ready meals again (with an eye to salt content, of course!).

I think I am going to try calorie counting. I lost weight before doing that. Unfortunately, I have a fridge packed full of SW-friendly food because I just did a shopping. Maybe I'll try calorie counting, but prioritise getting protein at every meal, plus more fruit and veggies than I did the last time.

If it helps, I cook for a husband and little one too and they both like my SW meals.

Last night was trout, sautéed garlic potatoes, carrots, broccoli, cauliflower and fried shallots and mushrooms. The only difference was that I made a parsley sauce for the husband but it was not needed really. Desert was a fat free yoghurt and berries for me, full fat toffee yoghurt for the hubby and fromage frais for the tot. Easy to accommodate everyone and I didn't have to measure a thing.

i am having the same problem with weight watchers i have tried to do both it just seriously confuses me and i like the simplicty of the calorie so easy to find this is what made me change from syns to propoints its hard to find syn values but its even easier to find kcals
