Hi everybody, I've just joined to the site and looking for some motivation. I'm trying to lose weight. I joined weight watchers a couple of weeks ago and I've already lost 6 pound which I'm happy with :) but I have 6 and a half stone to lose to reach my goal so I'm a long way off yet. But I'm really struggling with exercise! Until I've lost a bit more weight I don't want to go to the gym as I'm really self conscious, so does anybody know what's the best exercise I can do at home? Or possibly DVD? That would help with me who needs to lose quite a bit of weight.

Hi Sophia

I know how you feel. I still don't go to a gym.

Personally don't like cardio (who does?!?). So when I started this journey, I looked at the easiest way to get my exercise in. I discovered kettlebells.

Honestly. A fee hundred swings a day made a big difference and since then I have done Focus T25 (a great home DVD workout) and now doing chalean extreme!

I now occasionally do a few swings when I'm short on time and need to fit my daily cardio in.

Hope this helps and all the best to you xx

Jillian Michaels is fantastic, her 30 day shred dvd is very effective (and short) and only £5.00 on amazon at the moment. She is very motivating and knowledgeable. Do read the reviews. You can try some of her others. There is Leslie Sansone if you feel Jillian is bit too strenuous right away, she is very highly rated for the novice/injured etc. If you feel super fit give Insanity, T25, P90X, P90X3 a go!

Thank you both for the advice.

Kettle bells? I've seen these, because I have no idea with what helps loose weight I thought they was for building muscle. I'll have a look into those thank you.xx

And I've tryed insanity my husband does it as he used to be in the army he's generally fit anyway he can do it fine but I really struggled! But I will defiantly try Jillian's DVD tho, thank you :) xx

Kettlebell swings are both strength training and cardio. It won't give you any bulky muscles but the effort of lifting the bell increases heart rate. Plus you have to squat to swing and that works your legs. Legs being such a large muscle group automatically means your heart rate shoots up and oh how you sweat.

Also. Building muscle is a great for burning fat. It will help toning and as women we cannot bulk up like men without supplements. It just makes us look leaner.

Google kettlebell swings to learn the proper form before starting the exercise. I have also done the swing with dumbbells (but you gotta be more careful here).

Oh and I agree with you on insanity - I could not get thru it! Jillian I find too repetitive. Focus T25 has a different workout everyday and keeps you interested.

if you have a wii you should be well away the just dances are brilliant there are 6 in total and they just get your body having fun when it happens you have fun but get other people involved me and my mum are always playing but then there the my fitness coach on the wii and i find it great especially the dance workout one with latin dance. they also say that yoga is great because it helps with your metabolism.

what you could do if you have steps go walking up and down them a few times that will help with the weight loss it might sound stupid but it works

Hi. If you are fairly new to exercise I would highly recommend Romemary Conley DVDs, yes they are a bit dated now compared to some of the modern ones but they are so easy to follow (I have little to no co-ordination and picked them up easily). The Fat Attack one would be a good one to start with (try and look past the leotard!). The warm up, aerobics section and toning section are all separate so you can choose to to the warm up then do the only aerobics or toning if you wish. And the aerobics section is only about 20mins long so really do-able and shows you beginner to advanced moves, you will build up your fitness levels faster than you think so you can move on to more modern/intense workouts. AND I got my copy for 1p on amazon! Also, you don't need any equipment other than a chair or broom handle!

I tried Jillian Michaels 30 day shred, yes I agree the workout is good and effective, and has different ability levels, but I found that woman so annoying I sold the DVD!!

I've got to second Kettlebells. I've been doing a Kettlercise class for the last month and the difference in my body shape is great. I've just bought the Kettlercise Just for Women DVD so I can work out at home.

The guy who devised the Kettlercise routine calls it Fat Liberation!!

As you are a women you lack the hormones which would allow you to bulk up. No matter how big a weight you lift you will never look like Arnie unless you start pumping yourself with a lot of extra hormones and eat a lot. So don't be afraid to lift some weights. Weight training will speed up fat loss and it is much more effective in a shorter period of time than traditional aerobic exercise. Check out the thread "Secret to Shaping Up" in the Kettlebell section of the fitness forum on here. The results posted in there are incredible!

golds gym on the wii and exer beat is brill for exercise and sooo much fun

Kettlebells are great but you've got to have someone show you the proper technique so you don't injure yourself. Us women don't build bodybuilder muscles due to too little testosterone we just get wonderfully toned! They're a great cardio and toning exercise.

I have jillian michaels 30 day shred but I'm so very tempted to give t25 a go but I hear it's very expensive. The difference between insanity and t25 is that t25 had low impact modifications whereas I have heard from a physio friend of mine that people going straight into the very intense and energetic insanity moves can end up very badly injured due to impact on their joints.
