Exercise

;) Hello there everyone.

I am on my fifth week (weigh in Tuesdays), and I was wondering: what, if any, exercise do you guys do with LT? None of the literature I have read has recommended an exercise program, and although I have lost a lot of weight without it, most GPs recommend good diet AND exercise. :read:

If I start toning exercises will that help stop your skin getting loose? I saw this guy on TV that had lost 20 stone and had lots of loose skin, and it has got me scared. I have to lose 7 more stone (lost 1 stone, 12 pounds so far), does that mean I will have the same problem? If the muscle underneath the skin/ fat if stronger will that help?:character00115:

For aerobic exercise, I can't afford a gym, but I have an exercise bike. Or would a walking program be better for someone my size?:whacky068:

Well, I think it depends on several factors.
  • Your overall weight to start
  • Your age
  • Your skin type
  • Exercise
I'm sure it can only help, I try to do a half hour walk each day (don't always manage it) Good luck xx

I think you also need to consider how used to exercise you are.

I walk my little one to school and back each day (not in the school hols of course) and try and do an exercise video coz I can't afford gym fees either.

I would do what you feel you can and try and build it up gradually. When you feel confident (and I'm not yet) then swimming is good exercise and the water supports the body so you are less likely to injure yourself.

Your exercise bike is a good start. Do 5 minutes for a day and try and increase the time gradually.

Good luck.

Before I started LT i didnt exercise at all unless you count walking to the bus stop or the corner shop for a bag of crisps.

my first week I started small and walked an extra bus stop each day. I now walk the 1.5 miles to town where i catch a bus the rest of the way to work , I walk around the hospital at dinner which is about a mile then i walk the 1.5 miles home from town of an evening. If its not raining i go out for a half hour lesiurely bike ride and if it is i just walk up and down the stairs for fifteen minutes or so, i do about ten minutes of my new fave toy the 6 second abs (2 quid on the carboot!) and about ten minutes on my mini size 3lb dumbells (die bingo wings die)

Its all about what you want to do, you could probably get away with doing nothing but I want to get into the habit of exercising because when i stop paying £36 a week for LT im going to start paying for the Gym so its just a habit I want to get into. My cousin was on LT and did no exercise apart from the usual walking around at work and home and she still lost weight

As for excess skin lash yourself in either palmers cocoa butter, bio oil or St Ives tightening body lotion (I use this one and its BOGOF at superdrug at the mo) just use it loads and drink loads of water.. you will have a bit , itll take a while for your skin to catch up they reckon a month for every stone you lose , itll never be pefect but a bit of extra skin is waaaaaaaaay healthy than a bit of extra fat.

PS exercise bike is a good idea and i once got told a very a sneaky way to do it so you dont go at it too hard
1.) stick exercise bike infront of telly
2.) watch your fave programmes
Whist the opening credits are on pedal (if its one of those american ones where they dont have the credits till five mins in pedal till they start) stop while you watch your programme but have 1 word that if they say it you have to pedal for 2 minutes (such as a characters name or a place) then also pedal while the adverts are on and also pedal while the closing credits are on (odds are by the end of the programme you have done about 10 mins)
do it for one programme one night then the next try it for two then three the next till your doing your 30 minutes!
The lazy way to exercise and the woman who told me this actually does it !! she watches all the soaps and shes getting some exercise!

Wow, Gene, that inspires me! Took my bike out this a.m for the first time in weeks. Could only manage 15-20 mins and pushed the bike back home. Just realised that having a BMI in the healthy range is not equal to being physically fit. Exercise is essential for fitness in my opinion.

Hiya Trimlee, 20 minutes is good ! and the push back helped tone your arms !!
Its took me 6 weeks of just increasing from 10 minutes round the block to the half hour along the riverbank , fitness is deffo as important as being thinner but it takes time to build that up so even if its only by an extra 2 minutes a day as me nan would say "owts better than nowt"

Great idea about exercise bike in front of the tv! Will try that one myself as I find it the most boring exercise ever!

soo is a bike just as good for weight loss as it is for toning legs?? and is it just as good or almost as good as a treadmill??/

Hi,
I've lost near enough 5 stone so far and haven't done any exercise with the exception of walking. I just think while your losing and on such low calerie intake it would be mental to try and push yourself whilst you have no sugar in your system which your body needs to make your muscles work properly. As for the skin the best thing you can do is drink LOTS of water as this helps the elasticity of the skin. I have a little lose skin on my tummy but nothing that toning exercises will now sort out once I refeed.
Good luck

Yoga is really good for toning up. I found it hard to do cardiovascular exercise as it made me feel faint within 10 minutes so I tried yoga. I did it years ago and found it really does work - and it's quite relaxing too. Get yourself a DVD or you could do what i did. I went online and printed out lots of sheets that tells you how to do the yoga position and how to move into your next position. You can then build up a yoga routine to suit yourself.

Apart from feeling like an arse the first few times you do it (especially when ur husband looks at you like u had two heads) it's really good and you can feel it working your muscles!

Good luck xx

Wow! this thread is full of lovely tips for me! I went for a 30 minute walk today, going to try to start a walking program, like Cathy (slowly at first- that will increase the chances of me sticking to it!).

Gene Genie- I love your TV suggestion, its like a heathly drinking game! Maybe I will get my bike out as well. I already use bio-oil- my skin feels really good at the moment, with the oil and the lack of bad stuff in my diet and all the water.

Cuddly- one of the main reasons I want to lose weight is so I can go swimming! At the moment I am worried people think a whale has somehow gotten into the pool and harpoon me for my blubber! I will be really nervous wearing a swimming costume, even if I lose all this weight, but it will be worth it. Good point about taking it slow as well.

Vickie L- yoga is a great idea as well, I might try it when I have lost a bit more. I can be quite flexible!

Sarah-Louise- congrats on the loss! Another reason to drink lots of water!

:thankyou: Thank you everybody!!!

That's a fantastic plan!! Love it

You are not only on 400 cals a day tho... you are on as many calories as you use!! (as stated in the LT video) So the more you burn the less you store!
You can go all out with exercise once you are use to it...just drink extra water to compensate for the loss whilst exercising...
Toning is great for skin issues ..try dyna bands, baked bean can etc to banish bingo wings ...squats are fab for leg definition reverse crunchies for stomach... I would also try and incoporate so cardio in as this will greatly improve you fitness and help you keep up maintaining your loss after LT
Do it now and it will be a habit for when you finish xx

Thanks for posting this Nic. Do you know of any exercise video or DVD on toning that can be used at home? Well done on your rising fitness levels!
