Tinnitus.........do you suffer? How do you cope?

I have suffered from tinnitus - a high pitched ringing in my head - since July 2011 and sometimes I can ignore it, other times I feel like I am going mad and get panic attacks at the thought that this is with me for the rest of my life. I would love to hear from any fellow sufferers and see if we can share ideas, support each other etc. I have tried the noise machine but it didn't help.

Is anyone aware of any dietary changes I could make to alleviate this ringing or even turn it down a couple of notches?

I really wouldn't wish this on my worst enemy :(

I have pulsatile tinnitus and have suffered for about a year. Mine is worse when I am emotional or stressed. I try and fall asleep with the tv on or headphones in. It really does drive me to distraction though. I totally feel your pain xx

Thanks Kay. It really is a horrible affliction. Mine goes up several notches when stressed, tired or hungover. Hard to eliminate all 3 of those from my life. Daresay I could do without the alcohol though. A fellow sufferer told me that keeping fully hydrated was the key for her. Reduced the noise level quite considerably

I have it but not as bad as you thankfully, it sounds awful for you :( as far as I'm aware there's nothing really we can do about it. Have you seen your GP?

Yes, saw GP and had loads of tests there, saw various specialists at the hospital, brain scans, TMJ was considered a possible cause. Bottom line is they could find no reason for it and I have to spend the rest of my life with it. Right now it is really loud. Tired and dehydrated has possibly not helped today. Do you have it as a head noise or in your ear?

Hi Chevvy. What is bilateral tinnitus? Can't believe there are so many different types!! Love that fact that you can tell you are alive and breathing because of hearing the noises.......did make me smile. Hope everyone is as well as can be expected. Despite all the bells, whistles and bangs going on in our ears and heads.

Hiya so sorry for late reply bi lateral basically means the noise is in both ears and fills my head !! Well something has too.....once agin sorry for late reply ......ye its the only waybI can look at it tee hee ! Xx

Ah, I understand. Mine fills my head but doesn't affect my ears apart from sometimes when I am lying in bed at night and get a kind of throbbing noise in my right ear. It doesn't usually last long though.

I had to go and see a new GP last week about something unrelated and when I told her about the tinnitus she said that it quite often disappears just as suddenly as it comes on. Never been told that before, I was told it was with me for life. I am not sure whether or not to get my hopes up as I have done in the past only to have them dashed after yet another examination as to the cause.

Hope you are still coping.

xx

Hi lovey its doesnt go away there no cure im sorry to say it can be less noticable wuth less stress etc I have maskers getting different setin august.....its a case of trying to live with it,,,,, easier said than done tho eh! Thankyou for your kind wishes bless you xxxhope you okay

No one can really say the cause its in all our heads just that some brains make it an imoortant sound to listen too....ie when in a room with a click ticking say your brain picks uo on it but then realises its not important so you tend not to notice it.....xx

Hi Hun
I get it periodically through the day and volume varies depending what's going on around me. I'm so used to it try and just tolerate worse days now. I've not had it checked separately as its a symptom of my fibromyalgia. I also find hearing affected loud noises hurt and mumblers hard to hear. Get checked in case it's part of an underlying condition xx

Hi tweetiepie, I have had all the tests carried out and they can find no cause..........it started the day after dental treatment (this treatment took two months where the dentist kept cocking it up) so Doctor thinks that could have been the cause. Perhaps the constant drilling noise did something in my head :/ xx

That sound an awful way to have got affected, I feel for you. My noise is bearable so although I wish it would stop I can still hear and do things. Xx

Hi bless you all, with this I pray ?for us all that we do cope the best we can.....its a very weird condition it can send me into a panic mind you gettin me jumper stuck over me head does ?big hugs xx

I know what you mean about the panic....sometimes I get really breathless just thinking about all the years ahead with not knowing silence. Really ought to see about some CBT / coping mechanisms.
