Ideas needed for SW 'buffet' type Christmas Food!

Love the canape ideas, Emmylou - thank you! We are having a party soon and I was struggling to think of low-syn canapes. I shall put the Ryvita minis, etc on my shopping list.

Alcoholic Drinks over Christmas! Damage limitation!

Ooh, you've got me thinking... top tipples for Xmas... gin and slim vodka and lo-cal ginger ale JD and diet coke Amaretto and diet coke Asda sugar-free shandy (no alcohol and no syns, but tastes like shandy) Another lush soft drink is Tesco cream soda. I sometimes have this as a treat if I...

    Puddings Bread and Butter Pudding

I've never tried, but I'm sure it would be fine. Probably nicer, because the top could go all crispy - yum... Let us know how you get on!

    Portion sizes - please advise!

If I'm trying to keep an eye on my carb-intake on G/EE, I do the same as Eternity and measure my portions, as if I were doing a Red day. I would have 100g rice/pasta/noodles or 198g new pots, 227g jacket potato. That way I fill my plate more with the superfree stuff.
  11. kevandju5

    sushi

It is quite a teeny portion, but as I was busy shopping (for clothes, not boring food, for a change!!), I just wanted something quick and light, and the sushi was delish.

How do you plan on tackling xmas

We are going to my Mum's, so I know everything is going to be cooked in a totally synful way... think goose fat, vegetables in butter, you name it! I was thinking I might go for a Red day, selecting the meat and the healthiest-looking veg from the table. Then I thought I could take along a...

Interesting article "Has the calorie had its day?"

Yes, I read about this in the newspaper at the weekend. The new WW approach does sound a lot more SW-like! The article was talking about how protein foods take more energy to digest than carbs, and that WW's new points system would nudge the dieter towards proteins and complex carbs. Thought...

Does anyone else find they can only succeed on one plan?

I tend to either have Red days or Mix 2 Max. I like both plans because I can have 2 HEXAs and 2 HEXBs. I find EE a bit restrictive.
  16. kevandju5

    does anyone do mix2match still?

I like M2M days because if I fancy some carbs for a change, I can have them with lunch. I figure I've got time to burn them off during the day. But I think it's good to do a Red meal in the evening. Did you ever hear about no carbs after 6pm? Maybe there's some truth in it, it seems to work...
  17. kevandju5

    does anyone do mix2match still?

Hi Fern, I do Mix2Max quite often, a few days each week. Like Eternity, I am maintaining, so can't really say how it would affect losses. But I do know that it helps me to keep the weight off better than Green or EE, by limiting the carbs that I eat. On a M2M day, I tend to have a Neutral...
  18. kevandju5

TARGET MEMBERS - how do you....

I am maintaining. I don't have any extra HEXs. I just follow the plan as if I were trying to lose weight. I follow a mixture of Red and Mix2Max days, with an occasional Green/EE, as I find too many carbs make me gain. I have lots of superfree meals or Success Express meals, which help me not to...

lol. Well I indulged in the champers, just the one glass, and it was lovely! So my evening of resisting... It actually turned out to be a four-course menu. But I tried hard to select the healthiest options. I had a crab cake entree, with a lobster mousse, topped with caviar! Next...

    Resist list

Today is too full of temptation! Just been out for lunch with the kiddies and my friend. Had a healthy jacket potato and resisted the scrumtious Rocky Road they do at the cafe. Later I'm going out to dinner, where the restaurant is having a crab, lobster and champagne special menu tonight...

    Whats for tea tonight?

Well I don't really know what I'm having for dinner. OH and I are going for a meal at a local restaurant, where they are having a crab, lobster and champagne special menu! Well actually, bread pudding, no butter used! I experimented the other evening and came up with this little concoction... (It was yummy, maybe a little 'eggy' and next time I make it, I may just use half an egg and a little extra milk. Let me know what you think...) Cut a slice of WW bread...

I follow the old-style Mix-2-Max days quite often. They're quite versatile. You can have 3 meals, choosing wether to go Red or Green at each meal. Then between meals snack on superfree foods. You can also have 2 HEAs and 2 HEBs. I often have a superfree brekkie, ie cereal yogurt and fruit...

    Chocolate cake

Yes, you have to be careful not to add too much liquid. Just enough water to soften the All Bran, then drain away any excess. Because when you add the 3 eggs, that adds a lot of extra liquid.

    Puddings Beetroot Chocolate Cake

Don't worry Happy Holidays! You can't taste the All Bran, and it doesn't have the texture of All Bran. It just gives the mix some 'bulk'. The original recipe used flour, but I just tweaked it to suit SW.

    Puddings Beetroot Chocolate Cake

I saw a recipe for a beetroot cake and I've adapted it to SW. It's very rich, moist, indulgent and delish!:D 1 HEx and 8 syns for the cake. I cut it into 8, so 1 syn per slice! 42g All Bran 250g cooked beetroot 3 eggs 50g cocoa sweetener In a pyrex bowl, soften the All Bran in a teeny bit...

Yes, me too! My latest discovery is cocoa powder. I used to mix up hot chocolate options into quark or yogurt and fruit for a yummy choccy pudding. That was just 1.5 syns for dark choc or mint choc or 2 syns for white choc. I am now using 3 grams of cocoa for just 1/2 a syn! Or 6g for 1...

    Fish Sizzler?

It sounds like quite a good choice. The word 'sizzler' suggests it's fried in oil, so maybe count a few syns for that. Fish is always a good choice, as it's often an SS food, really low in calories compared to some meats.
  80. kevandju5

    Ideal place to eat out?

Indian and Chinese are quite good bets, as you can make good choices, e.g. Chicken dhansak and boiled rice (6.5 syns). Not had a Chinese for ages, so I forget the exact syns now, but dishes like beef/chick in black bean sauce are really low-syn. Most places you go, you can make good choices.
  81. kevandju5

Whats the best type of curry to eat?

I always have chicken dhansak or jalfrezi as they are really good syn value. I had dhansak last weekend and it was divine! I always ask for mine to be made hotter, as I think it is only medium-hot normally. And the jalfrezi is very spicy with plenty of chillies - yum!

EE: Asda GFY spicy tomato & chicken meal for one

It's a 400g pack and... 100g contains: 69 cal, 10.0g protein, 4.6g carbs, of which sugars 2.3g, fat 1.2g, saturates 0.4g, fibre 2.0g. It is chicken with tomato, onion, peppers, new pots and broccoli, so lots of free ingredients.
  89. kevandju5

EE: Asda GFY spicy tomato & chicken meal for one

These were reduced in Asda, so I bought a few of them. Thought they would be good on EE as they have potatoes and chicken. Any ideas how many syns?
  90. kevandju5

    Im stuck!!

My suggestion would be to try a few Red days if you are stuck. If I have a Red day, I tend to fill up on the meat/fish and veg/salad and not so much of the stodgy carbs.

    jelly mousse

I make mine with whichever flavour of jelly(blackcurrant this evening), made up to pint with boiling water, let it cool till nearly set. Then add natural yogurt or quark, to top it up to a pint. I always whisk it, as that gives it a lovely, bubbly texture. 1.5 syns for the whole recipe.

  96. kevandju5

    Anyone still do mix-2-max?

Yeah, I like having free meals, then HEXs spare if I fancy a cereal bar or some bran cake, in addition to my cereal for brekkie.
  97. kevandju5

    asda pitta bread

Okay, these were great when they were a HEB. Then they were taken off the shelves for ages. Today I bought a pack, but the packaging has changed and I noticed they were higher cal than the old ones. Are they still a HEB???
  98. kevandju5

    Anyone still do mix-2-max?

Hello! As I don't go to SW class, and just go-it-alone at home, I just pick up on any changes to SW through minimins. I get the impression that SW have phased out the Mix-2-Max plan, after the introduction of EE. I still do M2M as part of my maintenance plan, but wondered if anyone else on...

Hi Jaylou, You're so right. The second week was much harder! It sounds like a good idea to have one indulgence per day, but mainly stick to the plan. That's pretty much what I did. One day the indulgence was a couple of wines, another day an ice cream, etc. Where abouts are you going to...

    Syn Valued Resturaunt Meals...

It would be so much easier if syns were on the menu. Then again, maybe sometimes it does us good to have something we really enjoy and just call it flexi-syns.

The 'what i resisted today' Thread.

Just resisted the instant mash with my Red day sausages and filled up instead on green beans, onions and a fried egg! Even more impressive was yesterday's resisting... Went to Maccy D's with the family and had a chicken salad, no dressing. Instead of a white bap, I snuck in a wholemeal...

Asda GFY chicken sizzler ready meal?

Thought this might be a good option on a red day... any ideas? Thank you! xx
  116. kevandju5

    Beanfeast?

What's it made from? Is it similar to quorn, because I am intolerant to that. But I do miss eating this type of free/low syn food on Green days.
  117. kevandju5

Salads - how do you eat yours?!?

Just had a LUSH salad for lunch! Lettuce, pear, boiled eggs and a mixture of low fat cheddar and stilton, plus 2tbsp mayo for 1 syn.
  118. kevandju5

    tesco wholemeal pitta bread

It's a pain isn't it!! Every time I go to Asda I stock up on the pitta breads, their smart price syn-free natural yogurt and my fave cereal which I can't get hold of at Tesco!
  119. kevandju5

At goal weight...now what do I do?

Yes, SW reccommend that you have extra HEs in order to maintain. Unfortunately I've never been able to have the extra, as I maintain just by following the plan as usual. If you are still losing though, then give it a try and see what works for you.
  120. kevandju5

    going green?

I would say it's defo worth a try to do something different and shake things up a bit. Especially when you only have a little to lose. Maybe limit the 'green' foods to a sensible sized portion, but allow plenty of superfree to fill you up? I do think it's good to mix things up as it seems to...
  121. kevandju5

    Asda GFY pasta arrabbiata packet?

Thanks Loopyanna, but I don't think that's the same one. This is in a packet (like pasta n sauce), not chilled, and doesn't have any chicken in it.
  122. kevandju5

    Carb difficulties

Like you I prefer to limit my carbs. I aim to have mainly Red days, or even on Green/EE I limit the carb intake. I tend to have 100g wholemeal pasta/rice/noodles. I also make BNS roast potatoes and often have BNS as a 'base' for my meal, e.g. last night we all had a beef stir-fry but I...

The 'what i resisted today' Thread.

Kiddies' parties can be the biggest challenge, all those goodies! I always find spending a couple of hours resisting cake to be hard-going, so well done. It's nice when the Mums lay on peppers, tomatoes, etc or even strawberries and grapes, so you can nibble on something healthy. Today I...

Maintainers- how do you do it?!!

I am maintaining. I follow the plan just as if I were trying to lose weight. I have a mixture of Red/Green/Mix2Max days, with an occasional EE. I have lots of superfree meals or Success Express meals, which help me not to put on weight. I keep my syns to around 70 per week. Maintaining is...

Pub meal tonight - help please

The salmon and salad with dressing on the side sounds like a very good option. I often go for a steak with jacket potato, instead of the chips for a SW-friendly meal. I tried to open your link, but it didn't work - sorry.
  141. kevandju5

    The dreaded "E" word!

I have asked hubby to get me a dark choccy egg and I will do the same as I did last year, break it all up into portions and have one portion per day, counting the syns as I go!
  142. kevandju5

FAO those of you who are very close to target or have been at target for a while.

Hi Fern, I am kind of maintaining these days. I'm not at my official target of 9 stone, but seem to be sticking at 9 stone 3. I keep to SW strictly every week and never manage to lose any more! Anyhow, in answer to your question, when it's star week, or just before, I seem to always weigh...

My usual suspects are... * Cadbury's Highlights dark chocolate powder in my yogurt (1.5) * vodka (2.5) on a night out, or 1 or 2 small wines (4.5) on a night in * An occasional takeaway, Chicken jalfrezi is only 8.5 * A ryvita crackerbread (1) as an evening snack, with an extra light triangle...

Anyone else do the Sports Relief run yesterday?

I ran three miles for Sports Relief yesterday, and really loved it! I usually run a two miles, once or twice a week, so to do three miles was a bit of a challenge for me. I have to say the last mile was really hard work, but such a great feeling when you get to the finish line! Anyone else...

Good luck, Rosie. I know how much you've been struggling. Would you be able to post your food diary as I would be interested to see the Fast Forward plan. I have spent the whole week following Success Express this week, and with a sneaky unofficial weigh in, I still don't think I will have...

    Simmy's food diary

Had a look at your diary, as I saw you were upeset about gaining a pound. I would say your day looks good. The only thing I can see is that for an Extra Easy day, where is the 1/3 superfree in your breakfast? Do you mind me asking if you have much weight to lose? If you are quite close to...
  152. kevandju5

BNS and Sweet Potato are both SuperFree because......

LOL!!! They really are hard work! I usually just quarter the BNS, take the seeds out and roast it... saves on excess chopping and peeling! (And the skin is so yummy!!)
  153. kevandju5

What have you tried New to eat this week?

I made celeriac mash last week... a bit strange, like mash potato but tastes of celery! And I baked ray wings in foil, lovely! And on Mothering Sunday I tried a scrummy new ice cream flavour - ginger fairing, so lush! I guesstimated its syns, so all on plan!!

THe Results Are In....My Week on Success Express

Well done Stacey - that's an amazing result! I'm doing some SE days this week as I am struggling atm too. Well done on doing a whole week!
  157. kevandju5

    How do you stop yourself?

Lots of good advice on here, people. Thanks for being so honest, Fern. I have just eaten 2 Crunchie biscuits at 4 syns each, and am feeling a bit guilty about it! Why do we do it, eh? I have written it in my food diary, though. So all above board!!
  158. kevandju5

    celeriac - superfree?

Ooh glad it's superfree cos I've just had lots of it, roasted with aubergine and carrots too. Never tried it before and it was really nice!
  159. kevandju5

    How much do you exercise?

I'm doing 3 or 4 sessions per week atm. I go to a class, which is a mixture of aerobic exercise and toning for legs, bums and tums. I also jog twice per week - only 2 miles at the moment, but I'm going to step it up to 3 miles. Then if I'm feeling energetic, I will do a 30/40 min session on...

    Addicted to losing weight?

Maintenance is hard work. To maintain I follow the SW plan strictly every single day, and can't even enjoy any extra HEs without putting on weight. Plus you don't really get the benefits of seeing your weight going down, so at times it can seem like a lot of hard work for little reward. But...

    gingerbread syns?

Thanks Circes, but it was one of those kiddies' packs, with all the ingredients in little sachets and no nutritional info. I have guesstimated 28g to be 5.5 syns. Hopefully that's not too far off!
  162. kevandju5

Going to try some Original Days

This is definitely woth a go, BritMum. I do mainly Red days as I fnd limiting carbs is more effective for me, and this does have a positive side-effect of less bloating.
  163. kevandju5

    gingerbread syns?

Hello there, Just made gingerbread men with my little ones and I wondered what 28g of gingerbread biscuit might be roughly in syns? Thanks!

    Breakfast ideas

I usually have one of these... Oats so simple, made with boiling water, chopped apple and a yogurt mixed in, 42g of All Bran/ Crunchy Bran with yogurt and a banana Bacon, eggs and tomato if I have the time at the weekend.
  165. kevandju5

any one know a nice butternut squash recipe syn free

Not a recipe as such, but pop some BNS in a beef stew/casserole and it makes a lovely meal. Or use the 'bowl' to fill with curry, instead of rice on a Red day, or a bolognaise with cheese grated on top. I also have BNS with a roast dinner, instead of potatoes on a Red day.
  166. kevandju5

    Crunchy oatbakes

Oh no, I'm gutted! What with these disappearing AND Morrisons syn-free sausages... what is happening to all our favourites????? xx

Does anyone out there sneakily get weighed every day

I confess! I weigh myself every morning in the www style! I find it keeps me on track, too. If I have a heavier weigh in, I will make an extra effort to eat 2 out of 3 superfree meals that day.

I am totally on board with the cutting calories idea, in addition to following SW. My only problem with this is having followed SW for so long, and never having calorie counted, I have no idea of the calorie content of what I eat. Obviously pasta n sauces, mugshots, etc all have the info on...

This thread is very interesting. Yes, I think this is my problem too - too much free food! I think the volume of food is an issue for me. I could polish off a whole packet of pasta n sauce for lunch, with some salad plus a muller. That must be lots of calories! And then I wondor why I...

Ooh... maybe a 7? I make a lot of quick All Bran cakes in the microwave. Usually chocolate and I made a ginger cake last week. None of them are really like the 'real thing' but they do tend to satisfy my sweet tooth and they're actually quite filling too. The coffee one was quite yummy...

black forest gateau style pud - yum!

First I made a choolate scan bran cake (substituting the scan bran for 42g All Bran) and cut into slices. Then defrost some frozen berries in a bowl and sprinkle with sweetener. Put a slice of warm choc cake on top. (It will soak up the juices from the berries.) Top with a pot of fat free...

What's the one tip you would give to anyone starting

Stick at it! My weight loss was incredibly slow, but I kept plodding on and the lbs finally disappeared! And mix it up. If you're not losing on Green or EE, throw in some more Red or Mix 2 Max days to shake things up a little. xx

    Monday Weighers!

Lost 1 and 1/2 lbs this week after putting the same on last week, so I'm back within target weight again. Phew!
  221. kevandju5

    Absoloutly gutted and confused.

Wow - target minus 5! Good luck! I don't think I could ever manage that! Just keeping at target takes all my efforts!
  222. kevandju5

    Absoloutly gutted and confused.

Hi Fern, I know how you feel! I have been 100 per cent on plan the whole time since I got to target, and this week I weighed in 4lbs over target - gutted!!! So I have just had 3 days this week of having superfree brekkie and lunch, followed by a Red dinner. And according to my daily...

Anyone else struggling after doing it for years?

Hi C, I had followed Green days loosely for years (never measuring or strictly counting syns) and I had always managed to keep the weight off. Until January last year when the pounds had piled on and even following SW strictly doing Green days didn't work for me at all. Eventually someone...

    Aunt Bessie's roast potatoes

Anyone know how many syns in Aunt Bessie's roast potatoes? Hubby just cooked dinner and gave me these. Any ideas? Thanks.

Extra Easy Days OMG ! I'm at TARGET!!!!! (& actually a bit less than that!)

Well done Cornish Pisky, from a fellow Cornish girl!! That is brilliant news - you must be chuffed. My advice... Well, to stay at target I have to stick to SW pretty strictly. They normally advise you to up your Healthy Extras, but I have had to keep them the same. You will have to find...

By the way, the teddies were lovely! Enjoy your meals fellow slimmers, xx
  228. kevandju5

    What's cooking this Thursday?

Lol! Teddies are potatoes (in Cornish dialect!), but I love the sound of your roasted teddy bears!!! xx
  229. kevandju5

    What's cooking this Thursday?

ooh chip butties - yummy! Teddies are Cornish for potatoes!! lol! xx
  230. kevandju5

    What's cooking this Thursday?

Hello all, what's cooking tonight? I'm doing roast beef, roast teddies, roasted carrots, steamed broccoli, sugarsnap peas and babycorn... yummy! Plus mustard made from powder and stock for gravy, so syn free!

    Christmas Day SW Menu Challenge

All this talk of Xmas dinner is making me VERY hungry!! I can't really do a SW-friendly Xmas, cos we are going to my Dad's and his girlfriend is cooking. But I will probably be fairly restrained food-wise and enjoy a few more drinkies than usual, as I never get to enjoy a few glasses of wine...

Think I'm gonna give up, 4th week in, 3 week of not losing

I totally agree with Raquel. I find Red days are much more effective than Green or EE. I also do Mix 2 Max days, when I usually have a Neutral brekkie (like cereal) followed by a Green lunch and a Red dinner (or vice-versa). Worth a try, before you give up on SW! xx
  233. kevandju5

My new theory on Mix 2 Max

Yes, I try to do a Red or M2M day before weigh-in too!
  234. kevandju5

My new theory on Mix 2 Max

Yeah, each meal you choose Red, Green or Neutral. I generally have a neutral brekkie and one each of Red and Green for lunch and dinner. And then you get your 2 HEXB and 2 HEXA as well.
  235. kevandju5

    The Importance of......

I measure mine out every morning, to use in my cereal/tea/coff for the day. And when I've run out, that's it no more cuppas that day. Or if I really want an extra cuppa, I use a small splash and call it half a syn.
  236. kevandju5

My new theory on Mix 2 Max

I have found for a long time that too many Green days or EE make me put on weight, so I always make an extra effort to include Red days and Superfree meals. Recently I've been doing Mix 2 Max quite a lot. I love it cos it's really versatile and, unlike Extra Easy, you still get 2 HEXA and 2...
  237. kevandju5

    Mix 2 Max confusion???

I do M2M days quite a lot to maintain my weight loss. I find they are more effective than Green days or EE (which seem to make me put on weight!) but more versatile than Red days. xx

    Chocolate treats

    Fabulous! thanks Vixxster, xx
  239. kevandju5

For those who keep a food journal...

I have to admit I'm a total control freak and do my food diary every day, even when on hols. It justs helps me to feel in control of my eating, and therefore in control of my weight. But you can still be a bit more flexible on hols though. Maybe allow yourself a few more syns than usual? xx
  240. kevandju5

    Chocolate treats

The mini twisters are only 2.5 syns! And Skinny cow choc ice creams are 4.5. Lately I've just been mixing some options dark hot choc into my yoghurt and fruit, for a scrummy choccy pud! Only 2 syns for 11g. xx
  241. kevandju5

    Can vegetarians do red days?

Hey Lisa, good luck with your red days. I find that I put on weight if I have too many Green or EE days. I often have Red days or Mix 2 Max days that include one Red meal, a neutral meal and one Green/EE. I also have days where I eat 2 meals that are neutral or Superfree, then a third...

    100% SWers - 1 day at a time :)

I'm joining in this 100% thread, but as I pretty much always do 100%, I'm now doing 110% as a couple of pounds have crept on since getting to target in June. So to give it 110% I'm upping my Red days and having more Superfree meals this week. Today has been all Superfree so far, then I'll...

Well done on getting to target! xx

    Maintaining is so hard!

I agree it isn't easy! No, I don't go to class. I rely on my will-power which is pretty strong! I was never very over-weight. My weight just crept up after Xmas last year and I had to work really hard to shift it. I guess it's just my metabolism slowing down now I'm in my thirties! I...

    Maintaining is so hard!

Good advice, thanks! I really haven't worried about 1 or 2 pounds on, but this 3rd one is a kick up the bum to be a bit stricter for a while. You're totally right about still being at target when + or - 3 lbs. That's good to remember! I jus don't want it to become +4 pounds!! xx
  246. kevandju5

    Maintaining is so hard!

Hello all, I've not been on here for a while, as I've been plodding away on nicely (in a SW sense). I'm back on here as I need a good kick up the bum!!! I got to target at the beginning of June and I have been really good, sticking to plan 100 per cent since then. But in the last few...

    Your honesty is required...

It depends entirely on your legs! I don't think it's an age thing, more a leg shape thing! I certainly cannot get away with leggings!

    Thank you, folks!

    A quick question

Can anyone tell me... is 142g of fish as a HEXB the raw or cooked weight? I'm planning fish and chips on a Green day for tea, but don't know how much I can have. Thanks for any help,
