    Food Shopping

I tend to shop around a lot more than I used to, esp as the standard of fruit/veg can be so disappointing - when I ate cr*p I didn't care, I'd head for the pizza aisle! Saturday markets after 4 are a great place to pick up cut price veg in bulk. I'm using my slow cooker again, and it's great...

    Here I Go Again

Starting last October, got down to 24st (from 28ish) by February 2010 then plateaued for so long lost interest in diet by May as long as my blood sugars stayed low, and now crept back up to 25st 5 - and had a blood clot on my lung ouch! So, I'm back to goal setting, 25 stone the next marker -...

Can I do a full week LC?

Keep at it - I find pumpkin seeds and babybel lites (no more than 2 a day) can keep the carb cravings at bay. The only thing I would say is be wary of eating too late - I went through a stage of skipping breakfast and my weight loss stopped completely - I think the metabolism needs a bit of a...

    Any serious readers here?

I do read a fair bit, and I suppose my tastes gravitate towards high brow, but really that's because I'm quite a fast reader and the plots of so-called airport novels whiz past so quickly there's nothing lasting in my head whereas a 'difficult' read like W G Sebald or A S Byatt will slow me down...

does anyone ever have a day off?

I tend to try to have a meal off rather than a day off - but it is nice to have a small treat once every few weeks. The trouble with eating loads for me is that I then feel hungry for the same amount the next day.

What's everyone reading at the moment?

I am reading "The Suspicions of Mr Whicher" by Kate Summerscale - I'm not usually into detective fiction but it is fascinating, not least because it seems to be part fiction, part social history.

    The Restaurant

The thing I like about the Restaurant is that unlike Masterchef, half of the 'cooks' really seem to have no idea what they are doing. The couple who bought smoked salmon in a packet and presented it on some salad leaves as their signature dish were brill. I'm not warming to anyone just yet but...

    hello fellow low-carbers

My nutritionist tells me the the trick is to have fruit with protein, like a yoghurt, and do it early in the day. I tend to have my 2 pieces of fruit befoe 1pm and then just have veg after. I admire you being veggie - the one thing I don't like about low carbing is the meat and dairy I'm taking...

    Book group snobbery

I joined a bookgroup as an old friend was running it and wanted another man to support the lone man already there. I have to say I really enjoyed it - there was a mix of highbrow stuff but we also read 'chick' lit and had a real laugh - the one-upmanship only showed itself in the bringing of...

Water drinkers may have better diets

I've been laid up with a chest infection the past week and although I've continued the diet my water intake really dropped, cos half the time I was knackered to chug it - I know the lack of exercise is also a factor, but hardly lost any weight at all - I shall go back to over 2 litres asap...

    Tomatoes 'stop you getting fat'

I read this - I'm glad tinned tomatoes are just as good if not better - I don't know what I would do without them - although before my dieting days it was probably the pasta underneath and the cheese on top that did the damage !!!

    'Fat clubs' thriving in America

I think it's a really good idea too. I'm not sure how I'd take to the men who go to perve on the big girls though - whilst I feel it's great to be attractive to someone I remember going to a big and tall clothing event for men and women in Holland with a lot of very very large people about -...

It's for myself - though one of the secretaries at work mentioned I looked thinner in the face and said, you'll have the girls flocking to your door in no time. :sigh: I thought everyone knew I played for the other team. It's crushing to know you're not gossiped about!

    heather trott!!

I do like the character but I wish they would decide whether they want her to Benny from Crossroads or someone with serious storylines - I think EE has been trying to match the humour of Coronation Street lately with mixed results.

aarrrggghhh i am so fed up

You've lost 3 points from your BMI - that's brilliant, and people on here recognise that if no-one else does. Good luck with your driving test but seeing as you live in Cradley Health if you pass don't do what I did - feel so down I'd drive off to the 24 hour Tesco at 3 in the morning and...

    Diabetes, insulin, and losing weight...

Blacking out at work in early September led me to being diagnosed as being on the cusp of t2 diabetes - it is scary, but I'm trying to turn it into a positive. Because I've also been diagnosed with an underactive thyroid they want to get that right before trying me on metformin and...

what happened on that fishing trip

It involved soup and defied gravity. I reckon they'll keep on adding surreal hints and never actually give a definitive answer. It's a bit like Nessa's employment history - bizarre. I loves it I do.

    Wheat = bloating?

Not having eaten any bread for a month I cracked and had two dry bread rolls on Saturday - within hours my stomach felt heavy and with pains in my back - next time if I'm going to suffer it might as well be for something like brioche or a croissant!

I love Fingersmith - although I'm not a woman, I love the way that her female characters make things happen rather than let things happen to them, which is rare in historical fiction.

    heather trott!!

darren as the father has to be one of the worst plot twists EE has had in a while. I thought the Peggy/Pat stuff in the ice cream van was ludicrous - Pat going so far to hot wire a vehicle and then leave Heather lumbering about in the entrance - what were the writers thinking? I'm more...

Worst hotel you ever stayed at.

Hotel in Newquay - had a room right about the kitchen extractor fans and my window was covered in the yellowing fat of 1000s of cooked breakfasts. The Grand Hotel Scarborough - scary place - half the building held up by scaffolding, bowls of disinfectant at the doors due to Norwalk virus...

    New York!!

I'd recommend doing a boat trip round the entire island of Manhattan in good weather - it was astonishing. Make sure you have a walk in central park, see the Chrysler and Empire State Buildings up close and diet or not find a proper NYC diner to soak up the atmosphere.

is anyone else who has 100+lbs to lose just controlling cals?

I have way more than 100lb to lose. I'm on a lowish carb diet for insulin resistance, but the plan is gradually to reintroduce carbs as the medication starts working, then stick to a low calorie diet. I want to lose fatty tissue slowly so my metabolism adjusts and repairs itself rather than...

Weigh in with the practice nurse today with her scales (which seem kinder to me than mine) 27st 10lbs - 10lbs loss in 12 days. I never want to see 28 stone again!!! Although she seemed to think it wasn't a 'sensible' loss and I should aim for no more than 4lbs a week. Seeing her again in 2...

    New Bloke

It's a diet for those with early stage insulin resistance (pre diabetes) so its low carb, low fat, lots of fish, seeds, veggies, and small staggered meals (6) so my body doesn't fluid itself with insulin and make me exhausted. It was going well til I got this cold, but I noticed I had a lot more...

    New Bloke

My weight crept up to 28 and a half stone following my breaking my leg and giving up exercise 4 years ago.
