Hi Helena - fab NSVs! Go you! The prospect of the gym and maybe martial arts sounds very exciting. I joined the gym last year quite reluctantly but I love it now - it's started a whole new addiction to exercise. I'm doing the NHS couch to 5K (C25K) as well as using the free weights in the gym...

Well done on the loss Helena! That's fab! And that's an amazing amount of exercise yesterday which just shows what you can do if you think outside the box and work around an injury instead of aggravating it. And yes, I think you're absolutely right - just because you fall off the wagon...

Really sorry to hear you're having these issues with your PT Helena. She is bang out of order IMHO> Cheating you out of almost half your session is indefensible. any tips on how to survive........

Yes, you've absolutely done the right thing! Just take things slowly and don't try to do too much too soon. When I first started I could only do ten minutes on the exercise bike, then ten minutes on the elliptical, ten minutes on the rower etc. I built it up and can now do two hours in total...

Extra Easy Bipolar meds and weight gain (EE)

Hi Missimoo, losing weight is hard enough at the best of times and even harder when having mental health problems and coping with the side effects of meds. I joined a gym at the beginning of October and it has really helped my mental health. I've also shifted half a stone which is not a lot but...

Extra Easy Bipolar meds and weight gain (EE)

As I was saying olanzapine is awful for weight gain. Most anti psychotics (the family of drugs its in) make you gain weight but olanzapine is particularly bad. What needs to be balanced against this is that it is a very effective medication for bipolar etc. If you can get through the first...

Extra Easy Bipolar meds and weight gain (EE)

Haven't got much time now - but I didn't want to read and run. All i wanted to say is that I take olanzapine too and it is a DEMON for weight gain. Yes, you are certainly not alone Helena. And I did indeed keep putting the peanut butter away and going back for it. I ate with a teaspoon so it was a case of "one teaspoon won't hurt...oh just one more...just one more" and so on!

I do empathise Helena. I can't keep any goodies in the house at all as I simply can't control myself around them. If I bought some multipacks of chocolate I would just sit there and eat them till they were gone. Only yesterday I thought I'd buy a jar of peanut butter to have as a treat. Big...

You're being so sensible H. There will be gains which mean nothing in the scheme of things - our water weight can fluctuate drastically. If you stick to plan you can't help but lose - just have faith that the scales will reward you eventually. Because they will have no doubt.

SW the Vegan or Vegetarian way....

Well I've had my unsweetened almond milk delivered and tried it out in tea and in porridge (had a Hexb to use). I found it a lot creamier than skimmed cows milk but not as sweet. how many eggs is too many Eggs?

    A rambling rant

I've lived in a shared house and know how difficult things can be. What I would suggest is that you call a house meeting and introduce a cleaning rota. Extra Easy Has any one else done this...?

No, you have to pay every week (more than SW - over £5 I think) and if you miss a week you need to have booked a holiday or sick day or you'll have to pay, just like at SW. Unless you've been a gold member (having previously reached goal with WW) then I don't think you need to pay for missed weeks.

    SW Dissapointment :(

Your sample food diary looks great. The only thing that rang bells for me is your mention of the scan bran cakes you have every week. Hi Wildwookie - you can set your target to be anything you like as far as I'm aware. Once you reach target you are advised to add an additional healthy extra B choice and take it from...

    Extra Easy 5:2

I tried 5:2 alongside SW and it was a total disaster. I felt SO deprived from my two days of not eating that I just went mad on the free foods and syns on the days I could eat and I gained tons of weight with it. Back 100% SW now and much happier!

    Being realistic

I think 2.5lbs a week is a tad ambitious tbh. 1 - 2lbs is what SW say is a healthy achievable loss. I lost four stone a few years back with SW and averaged 7lbs a month but I stuck to plan 100% rigidly. You just don't know how your body will react so as Lardylady has said above just aim to stick...

    Syns

No, you only get a maximum of 15 syns a day to spend on treats (like crisps, sweets etc), and other indulgences (like tomato ketchup, mayo on your dinner etc). Intuitive eating has ruined my diet mojo!

I would try to adopt a middle ground between binging on junk food and following a strict diet. 98. krupskaya

Is it just me or is SW expensive?

I agree with Jay, it doesn't have to be expensive - pasta, potatoes, lentils etc are cheap as chips and really fill you up. Worried again. I'm gaining I just know it.

You really cannot tell anything by weighing yourself every day. Venlafaxine/Olanzapine and Slimming World

Sorry, I didn't answer your other question. I lost almost 4 stone while taking both medications - but not sticking to plan once I'd reached target meant I put quite a lot back on. That's not the fault of the meds though. I've lost 15lbs since xmas so they're obviously not affecting my weight loss!

Hi Ariescat, I'm on olanzapine and duloxetine (v similar to venlafaxine). I found the latter didn't affect my weight at all, but the olanzapine was a totally different story! Good advice from Coughdrops here. I think the issue is that you can't eat as you've always eaten and expect to lose weight. You do need to significantly change your eating habits to lose. There's a fair bit of cooking from scratch needed with SW. Plus you can't rely on bought sandwiches as...

To be fair to WW though, most fruit and veg is now free (including bananas and grapes) so there is always something to eat even if you do run out of points.

    5:2 Diet

As I observed on another thread I think there is some confusion as different books say different things. According to the 'Fastdiet' you eat 500 cals on two non consecutive days and whatever you like on the othe five. It's horses for courses really.

How to do the 5:2 diet

I'm using the book by Dr Mosely and Mimi Spencer called the 'Fastdiet' which is based on Dr M's Horizon programme last year. In that it says you can have whatever you like on non fasting days so long as you don't binge. So different books say different things. That one looks a bit complicated to...

    5:2 Diet

Welcome iwannabslim! Yes, I didn't think I'd be able to manage fast days either but also found them surprisingly easy. I'm just trying to keep a reasonable intake on feed days too as I did go mad on the last one lol. I'm actually looking forward to my fast days - got my next one tomorrow (I'm...

    slim pasta rice and noodles?

I just tried the rice - it was very gelatinous and a bit unappealing in the raw but when I added it to a stir fry it took on the flavour of the soy sauce and tabasco I used. It was actually really nice. I'd definitely have it again.

Debbie's 5:2 diary and dreams of being thin

Hi Debbie, didn't realise you'd multiplied your BMR by 1.2 - in that case you've got the right figure. I'm doing 4:3 for my first week or two then dropping down to 5:2. I've only got about half a stone I need to lose as I lost most of it (4 stone) on Slimming World. I had reached a bit of a...

    5:2 Diet

My third fast has gone really well, although I ate 500 cals instead of 400. I couldn't resist a sneaky peek on the scales this morning and my weight is going down nicely. This diet really works - hurrah!

Debbie's 5:2 diary and dreams of being thin

Hi Debbie, I've defected from SW too lol! I did my third fast today and it's much easier than I thought it would be. One thing I noticed from your post, you say you're having 25% of your BMR? You're supposed to have 25% of your TDEE (total daily energy expenditure). If you're using your BMR...

How to do the 5:2 diet

Hi the 5:2 diet is quite simple. You eat normally (not bingeing) for 5 days then on two non consecutive days you eat 500 cals (if female, 600 if male) or 25% of your TDEE (total daily energy expenditure). You don't have to eat in a particular time slot. You can calculate your TDEE here -...

    5:2 Diet

Welcome newbies and good luck with your first fast! I'm on my third today and it's been the hardest day so far. I've just been very very hungry. I think I overate yesterday on my feast day and that's made me extra hungry today. Going to try to eat a bit less on up days now and see how that works...

    5:2 Diet

Thanks Sofartogo. I found a site that calcualtes your BMR (basal metabolic rate - ie what you need to maintain if you were just laying in bed all day) and TDEE (total daily energy expenditure). My BMR is 1352.25 and TDEE is 1622.7 (I'm only 5ft2, and sedentary). 25% of 1600 is 400 so that's what...

Post your 5:2 fast day recipes here!

Hi all, it's great we have a 5:2 forum here. I'm intending to start next week and I am just working out what I'm going to eat on my fast days. I've just read 'the Fast Diet' by Dr Michael Mosley (the guy on the Horizon programme) and Mimi Spencer. It recommends you have 25% of your ordinary days...

The Douwe Egberts Flavour Collective Coffee Appreciation Society

All flavours went on sale today in my local Tesco for £1.49 a jar. It's so expensive I'll only buy it when it's on offer so I'm chuffed - especially as I love the stuff!

What is the ideal weight for someone who is 5 ft 2.5 inches?

I'm the same height as you and I'm 9st 7. I find it's slim without being skinny and not too plump either. We all have different body shapes though, so what suits one won't suit another. I think you should just see how it goes as you drop down and stop where you're happy.

first week weight loss? Has everyone lost on there first week?

I only lost a pound my first week but then went on to lose four the following week and got slimmer of the week. In total I've shifted four stone even though I had a slow start so don't be too disheartened if you don't shift much at first - you'll gt there if you stick to plan.

Target Membership- what if you go under goal?

If you dip more than 3lbs below target you have to start paying until you get back in target range. Aletrenatively you can reset your target but it has to be at least 7lbs lower than your original target.

    Can I join in?

Welcome to Minimins and Slimming World Nic! SW is a lot to get your head around at first but you soon get the hang of it and it becomes second nature. It's a great plan - limited counting and weighing and no need to ever go hungry. If you have any questions get posting!
