How many calories should I be eating??

I'd go onto My Fitness Pal, there's a website and a phone app, all free and it works out your calories and has a huge database and food diary to help you log food. It's indispensable for a lot of us here on cc! Good luck....

    Gutted!!!

Yes that is disappointing! At least if you'd shed a few extra pounds there would have been a silver lining to being ill, I would feel the same. But as the other girls pointed out, it may catch up to having an extra big loss next week because you may be retaining water or something and once that...

    weight

I usually look up the cals for 'dryweight' on pasta and rice because it will weigh more when cooked, therefore the amount of water counted into the cooked weight cals brings the value down. For potato chips/ wedges I expect it's the same cooked as raw or near to it.

    no loss!

Yes it is surprising, I always hesitate to point it out as I get paranoid that someone might think I'm implying they're greedy, but the portions are really, really small for some foods- cereal you get enough to feed a budgie for example, as you say pasta and rice are a 'shock' hahaha- like it...

I got the cheapies from Asda, £6. They are not fancy but they do the job. The gadget freak in me would like some snazzier ones but I can't spend the cash at the moment.

    My first 'bad' day yesterday

Well I am doing very well on my mission to get down to a nice n skinny size 8-10, but yesterday my niece had a Christening and it was buffet. I knew it was coming so I had a mushroom omelette for breakfast (low on cals, big on fill!) and decided the buffet would count as both lunch and dinner so...

Help with choosing least calorific option!!

Yes the pea and mint soup sounds fine, you could just leave the fritter if it looks greasy. The sole sounds like a good option but have to agree on the spinach, ask for it without butter, and ask for all dressings to be on the side in little pots, then you can assume it's a bad as oil or mayo...

    Vibration plates

I think they do work but it's not cardio and won't help you lose weight. They do help you tone up a bit though and are quicker than a normal weights routine. However if I was going to buy a machine for home use I would go with an exercise bike, stepper, elliptical or treadmill. I used to have a...

    It's been a while..

Hello! I don't remember you as I didn't use this forum last time I lost the baby flab, I've been here about a year. no loss!

It's impossible to tell what the reason is without knowing exactly what you eat etc. but the most common reason for no weight loss is so-called 'under-reporting' on food, mainly due to portion sizes being a lot smaller than you would think. For example cheese- the actual serving size is like a...

Roller Derby twice a week, it's quite full-on and lasts 2 hours each time. I sometimes skate in between as well. I'm looking forward to getting back into it after a sprained knee has kept me off my skates for a few weeks. I also walk the dog and most days visit the local shops so I'm quite...

You and I think along the same lines RachBlue, and have the same BMI goal and body type! New dieter- all going well with one problem.

I have the same thing, I was never the most regular anyway but now it's once every few days which seems ridiculous. Best not to worry too much. I have to agree with the previous two posts and say I am sick of hearing/ reading the words 'starvation mode', it's nonsense imo and people seem to love repeating pseudo science like it's rock solid fact. Foods that are low in calories

Quorn! I love it, burgers 80cals, 'beef' sandwich slices 27cals for two slices, 'chicken' fillets in tomato and olive sauce only 141cals, peppered 'steak' only just over 100, and so on! And it's filling, more so than anything else you could have for the same calories other than soup but I find...

    Calories per meal?

I'm not a planner but I do believe in being prepared. I have low calorie indulgences to hand should the need arise, otherwise the kids' biscuits would be too tempting. Me too, it tells me off daily for being under on calories but I like to see results and know I find it hard to lose weight if I am not really strict. 33. S

Wanted to ask a quick question

It never goes below 1200 unless you manually change it so if you are on more than that then yes it probably will take calories off to reflect your new weight as it asks you if you want to let the program re-evaluate your calories every 10lb you lose. If it's worked it out at 1200 for you then no...

A quick update and thanks for all the help

If you are losing well on 1500 I would keep to that. There is no need to eat more if you don't need to, provided you are eating all healthy food and not empty calories you should get adequate nutrition with 1500. Good luck!

I am eating 800-1000 at the moment but MFP says I can have 1200 which I may have on some days. When you get down to this size though and after having two kids it is hard to get any more weight off so I am going hard core! haha I am losing nicely though.

How do you know when to stop?

There is no easy answer. It's only natural to be thrilled with your achievements but then think 'why stop there?' when you know you could be even slimmer. Calorie deficit or not?

Hmmm not sure how you understood my post as meaning 'no point exercising', clearly there is either a greater deficit created through exercise or the opportunity to eat a bit more. And there is always a point in exercising.
  98. S

    Calorie deficit or not?

The 1200 calorie recommended food intake is calculated with the necessary deficit worked in to lose weight at your chosen rate. As you stuck to this and also exercised it will allow you the extra calories so that the net calories for the day are around 1200. This is because my fitness pal works...

Ketosis is sold by these diet salespeople as though it is a good thing. It is not good, your body is forced to leech calccium from your bones and it is also a strain on your kidneys. I have some from excessive weight gain during my first pregnancy. I gained far too much weight and on my legs which are usually slim, so I have stretch marks on my thighs and bum, and on 'the handles'. I have a wrinkly bit of belly but this is barely noticeable when i'm slimmed down, you can see...

    I HATE that ad

Really enjoyed this thread, an excellent reminder of why I got rid of telly in our house! We do have one for games and films but no ads here thank goodness! I was particularly annoyed by the iphone one mentioned- I wouldn't buy an iphone because of the child labour etc. and would never feel like...

    Boredom eating......?

The very best thing to do is some exercise! If I'm 'peckish' and not due a healthy snack I will have a hot drink as it will stop the craving for a while. If I'm just bored I try to go for a walk or find something to do, if I must pick at something I choose little fruit such as berries or grapes...

At what BMI would you class someone as 'slim'?

Who said a bmi of 23 was fat? I agree with you it's not!

NOTHING has worked and I need your help.

How frustrating! Just wanted to throw some encouragement your way. When your exercise equipment arrives get your favourite upbeat music on and get moving, exercise is the golden key for a lot of us. I have never struggled like you are but after having kids it gets harder and harder to shift that...

    Body Composition Analysis Machine

I would not worry too much about what this gadget has to say. It is very unlikely that your sedentary workmates are fitter than you if you regularly exercise and in all likelihood it was a gadgety, inaccurate device. Keep up the good work because it sounds as though you are doing fab!

At what BMI would you class someone as 'slim'?

Yes it's true that someone with considerable muscle mass can still have a higher bmi and still be slim, but the majority of us do not have to worry too much about this, that said bmi is only a guide and fat percentage is more important. Not everyone has the means to test that though so we have...

Calorie deficit - with excercise or diet?

Right... you do need to think about food as nourishment more, your body needs nutrients and I can only hope that those sandwiches are piled up with salad, healthy fillings and other goodies... at least try to have a proper meal in the evening or a decent breakfast. But in answer to your...

At what BMI would you class someone as 'slim'?

I think that (generally speaking) once your BMI is below 24 and you still think you're 'fat' it is mostly in your head because you certainly wouldn't look fat to others. My BMI is about 24.5 now and I do look chubby as I am unfortunate enough to carry all my spare fat like a rubber ring around...

    vibration plate

Vibration plates are a good way to improve your muscle tone (a lot quicker than a full weight-bearing workout) but are not a cardio workout- in other words you will still need to do walking, swimming, sports or whatever you usually do to burn off calories and improve your CV fitness. If you are...

    How Did You Become Fat?

Pregnancy. Both times. Also I find I struggle to lose weight much more than before kids, and my natural 'set point' seems to me a stone heavier than before kids. Still, it CAN be done, and will be.

    gained 8lbs in 4 days?

I agree with pp, you need to weigh yourself no more than once a week, on the same scales at the same time of day and wearing the same, or similar, clothes (or nekkid!) or there will be too much variation to gauge your weight loss/ gain. I admit I weigh myself every morning but I don't expect my...

new to pp can we still follow the old points systum

You will still be able to lose weight on the 'classic' WW plan but don't mix the two because the differences are too great. The old points values were worked out on calories and saturated fat, the new ones are created using the carbs, protein, fibre and fat content so it's a lot different, plus...

    Ok I've Decided!!!

Hey, just wanted to wish you all the best and give you a word of advice. The only time you can help yourself is right now, this moment. Tomorrow never comes. While you keep setting future dates to start the rest of your life it is passing you by. Every moment of every day that passes is your...

What is your motivation to lose weight?

Well I have to admit that (as I am still wanting to drop a bit more weight even now i am in the healthy range) it is just general vanity!! Why waste my young years being too fat when I can still look great? I know I can still get down to a size 10 so why settle for being a 14?

    hot water and lemon

Real is way better, it is always preferable to eat raw, fresh food in its natural state where possible. I'm sure Jif would do in a pinch, but if you're planning to take hot water with a squeeze of lemon every morning then start buying a bag of lemons with your groceries I would.

How many calories will 2 hours of exercise burn?

I reckon 400-500, maybe more, depending on your weight and how fast you walk or if it has an incline. I don't think it's unrealistic for everyone, I could certainly exercise that much and did do before I was pregnant last time, I will be building back up to that again now that he's 6 months old...

Which is harder, losing weight or giving up smoking?

They are similar in terms of difficult-ness as well as on other levels. I found that giving up smoking was very, very hard until I found I was pregnant and once the 'choice' was taken away- no problem at all! It was very easy once the option to smoke was gone. Eating less can be very difficult...

BMI says Im ok...waist measurement/height ratio says Im still high risk for diabetes

oops forgot to say that I am in the same boat, my BMI is in the ok range now (although I would like it nearer 20 ideally!) but my waist measurement is large. Like about 34 inches held in. which is much larger than the recommended 'safe' measurement.

BMI says Im ok...waist measurement/height ratio says Im still high risk for diabetes

You could try ilipo, it's non-invasive and painless, they laser the fat cells through your skin and force them to release their energy. You have to exercise afterwards to burn off the energy so that it's not re-stored, but that can't be a bad thing. I would love to try it as it allows you to...

    Lasagne?

Use TVP or very lean mince and use fat free cottage cheese in the layers instead of ricotta, don't use any white sauce, use green spinach pasta and if you must use cheese on top then use lower ft cheese and be stingy with it.

Why does my body seem to want to be big?

Thanks for the replies, I think maybe it has to do with breastfeeding. Some women are lucky and lose more weight while nursing but others find they stubbornly cling to extra weight until the baby is weaned. I may just have to settle for not getting any larger for now, eat healthily and...

Why does my body seem to want to be big?

:( I had a baby 2 months ago and am full time breastfeeding, I've been following a very strict diet religiously for a little over 2 weeks and have stuck to it religiously. In fact I am quite hungry a lot of the time and haven't eaten much of anything. I have been exercising most days, either...

    losing weight from boobs

Unfortunately, despite what some manufacturers of exercise gizmos would like us to believe, it is not possible to 'spot reduce' and fat will go from wherever it wants, there's just no way to selectively shed unwanted weight. Many women complain that as they lose weight their boobs also shrink...

Hello, thanks for having me. I am on a mission to lose some weight having had a baby 7 weeks ago and feeling very fat. Somehow having an 'excuse' to be larger doesn't make me feel any better with a summer holiday to look forward to with my extra rolls protruding between my bikini halves. I...
