Only 1 1/2 stone to lose - worth joining SW?

Hi, my weight has been gradually creeping up over the past few months, and although I'm not very overweight, I've just got back from 2 weeks holiday to find that I'm now the heaviest I've ever been at 10st 10lbs, making my BMI 26.4 and I don't like the feeling. I would like to get back down to...

Advice on which book is best to buy

Why We Get Fat And What To Do About It by Gary Taubes - The only one you need. It's a slimmed-down version of the Diet Delusion, which is also brilliant.

Great article in The Guardian & BBC doc

I found the programme fascinating, in fact so much so that I have"kept" it on my Sky+ box to watch again. Lovely to see my hero Gary Taubes on there. Everything that was said made so much sense! Can't wait for this week's episode, got the recorder set already.

    Newbie low carb - help

A few suggestions: Today I ate Breakfast -porridge - No good. Replace with fried egg and bacon Snack - alpen bar - No good. Replace with a pepperami, sugar free jelly or piece of cheese Lunch - bagel and ham - Bagel no good. Keep the ham, perhaps with green salad and mayo instead? Tea -...

    Low carb sauce thickeners?

My low carb recipe repertoire would increase tremendously if I could find something to substitute for the flour in sauces to thicken them. I have a lot of recipes using white and cheese sauce and the other ingredients would be fine - butter, cheese and watered down double cream instead of milk...

    Historical Fiction - Any recommendations?

Never mind, I just came across this site http://bookclubforum.co.uk/forum/index.php and it answers my own question!

Do you ever re-read your books?

Don't often re-read my books - I always have so many new ones that I want to read and not enough time to read them, that I REALLY don't have time to re-read the old ones! Got three from the library this week and another two on order.

    Historical Fiction - Any recommendations?

My mum, who is an avid reader, recently recommended Jean Plaidy and Philippa Gregory to me, as I love anything historical. I am now totally hooked on both authors and am working my way through their entire collections! Can anybody recommend any other authors of historial fiction based on fact?

What can I have with my curries?

Thanks for all the tips. I've been to Holland & Barratt today and bought some flaxseed (am I right in thinking this is the same as linseed?). I wish I'd looked through the recipes thread first though, because I only bought a small packet to try it first to see if I like it, but now I've seen...

What can I have with my curries?

I have several great low-carb recipes for curries, which all my family enjoy, but I'm fed up of having curry and salad whilst the rest of the family have theirs with rice and naan bread! Salad just isn't the same, and lettuce is no good for mopping up all the lovely sauces! Does anyone have...

    ketosis

Yes, mine too, especially the first pee of the day because its more concentrated. I don't use my ketostix as much now because I know when I'm in ketosis because of the smell! Sorry, TMI! Yuck!

    Ditching the scales

I'm definately a fully-fledged member of the WA! First thing in the morning (after my first pee) and last thing at night (after my last pee), both in the nuddy of course! I also write down both weights. Also, if I happen to be near the scales during the day, they just seem to shout "come...

    Low Carb Shakes

Yes, I found Slimfast too sugary and it was knocking me out of ketosis, so I bought the whey protein shakes from Holland & Barratt in strawberry, chocolate and vanilla and mixed my remaining SF shakes in with them to prevent throwing them away! The SF makes the protein shakes taste nicer, and...

    Bye Bye Fat Clothes!

OK, I've done it, I've put my first 10 lots on ebay, because they're even baggier now than they were when I first tried them on, and there's no way I ever want to fit in them again. Besides, I need the money to buy a whole new holiday wardrobe before the sales start! Tried on last year's...

    Go Lower

And it's not a VLCD. A day's meals and snacks adds up to 1500 calories.
  19. J

is there a cheap way of doing a vlcd

[quote=sassey50kg;695402]I have looked in to this a little, the only thing I can suggest is protein powder mix (you can get it a holland and barrett) taken with ss milk and a quality multi-vit tablet which contains everything inc oils you need. xx What is the carb content of this?

    CDer needs help...

No, just swapped. My husband found out how much I was paying for CD per week (nearly £40/week) and did his nut, so I felt guilty going back for more CD packs after that and thought I'd give SF a try instead.

    Should lose after weekend...............finally!!!

Where do you get the sero bars from?
  23. J

    CDer needs help...

I switched from CD to SF recently too due to the cost, and have continued to lose weight. However, the carb content of SF is much higher than CD so I only have half a SF shake to keep me in ketosis, and I have an Atkins-type meal in the evening. The SF shakes aren't as nice as CD and there...

    Go Lower and Atkins...

I had to Google it to find out myself. It's a diet of ready-made, calorie and carb-counted meals. Looks very expensive though, at about £10.00 per day (less if you buy in bulk). You get breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks and the total for the day adds up to 1500 calories and are low-carb. I...

    Hungershots?

Tried one for the first time yesterday. It worked, but there wasn't much in the bottle, I drank it down in one gulp! At £2.99/4 I'd expect them to last a bit longer! It filled me up for a while though, but then so does a glass of diet Coke. Won't bother buying them again.

    Go Lower and Atkins...

    Looks suitable to me!

Bought some from Morrisons today but haven't tried them yet. They were in the yoghurt cabinet near the Yakult/bifidus digestivum gubbins.

    Thinking of trying the 'bars'

I had my first CD bar last night at the cinema (toffee, very yummy). I thought I'd take one with me as the hubby and kids were going to be sat there munching Minstrels, Maltesers and Popcorn, so having something sweet to eat would stop my hand from creeping in to the Maltesers bag! It worked - I...

    Bye Bye Fat Clothes!

Clothes-Trying-On Update :- Just tried on my lovely red Ben Di Lisi cocktail dress that I bought for a posh Christmas "do" last year - it looks awful! It hangs off me now! Bye Bye Fat Clothes!

Good idea, we have an Asda near us, I will have a look what they have in the undies department. Will have to have a massive try-on. I really have no idea what bra size I am now - all I know is that I'm not the lady I used to be! Trying on my clothes and seeing them fall off me is giving me...

    Bye Bye Fat Clothes!

Oh yes, and another thing - bras! I desperately need to get measured for a new bra, as unfortunately I've lost a lot from the one area where I couldn't afford to! I wore my strapless bra last night and by the end of the night it was around my waist! Not a good look!
  34. J

    Bye Bye Fat Clothes!

You're all right, they've got to go. I guess deep down I'm a bit scared to get rid of them in case I put the weight back on, but I know I'm just being silly, there's no way I'm ever going to get to that size again. OK, ebay it is. I'll have to be careful how I advertise them - "large bag of...

I've just had a try-on and clearout of the clothes in my casual wardrobe, and consigned the following to a "fat clothes" bag in the loft. Green tea & decaf coffee

Yes, since I started drinking my coffee black I've discovered that adding a sweetener makes it much more palatable, even though I don't usually take sugar in my coffee. It also eases any "need something sweet" cravings I sometimes get. I'm developing quite a taste for it now! Can't stand...

Yes, me too, I'm watching more cookery programmes now that I'm not eating food than I've ever done! I'm also spending a lot more time on the internet printing out recipes (including a lot of the Come Dine With Me ones). Very strange!

Citric Acid and Sodium Citrate - the same thing?

Really? Well I haven't tried Diet Coke, but I was fine with Coke Zero and I found it really helped to fill me up without knocking me out of ketosis. Think I'll give the Tesco Coke a try.
  40. J

Citric Acid and Sodium Citrate - the same thing?

I've noticed that Tesco diet cola has Phosphoric Acid listed in the ingredients and no Citric Acid. However, it also contains Sodium Citrate. Does anyone know if this be OK to drink instead of Coke Zero? (It's a lot cheaper than Coke Zero!)

    SS + Sleeping ...

Since starting CD I'm finding it much harder to get to sleep, and often find myself laid wide awake with my mind racing until the early hours. When I do finally drop off, I really struggle to get up with the alarm and feel like I haven't slept. It's definately the ketosis that's causing it...

It's Friday***lets Do It Hour By Hour***

    Dog breath

Ketones (in particular, acetone, which is a ketone - I remember this from my chemistry classes), are the chemicals used in nail-varnish remover. Ketotic breath actually smells like nail varnish remover! Yuk, no wonder people are keeping their distance!
  44. J

    Hypothetical question for you!

You would probably gain about 5lbs, like I do, but it would all be water, and you would lose it again very quickly once you restart on SS. 1500 calories isn't enough to gain fat - you need to take in 2000 calories per day in order to STS and another 3500 on top of that to gain 1lb - so don't...

    Dog breath

Yes, for me this is definately the biggest down-side of doing the CD. I suffer really badly with bad breath (so my husband keeps telling me - at least he's honest!), and as my job is a medical rep, visiting surgeons and theatre nurses all day, it's not good! I keep a bottle of mouth wash in...

    Come Dine With Me..

I agree entirely - I think cutting it down to four people and squeezing it into an hour has spoiled it. However, I still think it's one of the best programmes on TV, and quite fancy applying to go on it (I'd have to blow the diet for a week!). I think it would be a lot of fun.....

    Question: Water...

Just think about poor me - I'm a rep and spend all my time on the road, usually in stationary traffic. Howard's Way diet

Well, the cost for one - £58.80 per week for three meals per day for women, £78.40 per week for four meals per day for men. It doesn't say what their products are - shakes, soups?
  54. J

    whats your taste?

It's sweet for me, definately. Loved all the soups the first week, but went off them one by one, until there was only the chicken and mushroom left that I liked! Love all the shakes, though.

It's Monday**** Lets Do It Hour By Hour****

Had a huge carb blowout at the weekend as I cooked a lovely three-course meal with hugely fattening dessert and copious wine for my family on Saturday, so I've got lots to do this week to get rid of the 5lb I've put on. I'm sure it's water though - I certainly didn't consume the 17,500 calories...

Problems with the CD Sole source diet

Yes, I feel very cold, particularly in the evenings, but for me the worst part by far is the REALLY bad breath. It's a nightmare - very embarrassing, and seems to be getting worse. I guess it's something myself and my family are going to have to learn to live with for a while.
  57. J

    Soups

I liked them all, except for the Leek & Potato (which tastes too oniony and kept repeating on me) for the first couple of weeks, then went off them one by one, until only chicken and mushroom remained! Loved the Oriental Chilli at first, it tastes like Thai curry, and I love Thai curry, but...

    IM A FAILURE

Hey, don't worry at all, the 5 pounds is just water! And how do I know? Because I've had a day off the diet today because I wanted to cook a special three course meal as a treat for my well-deserving mum and family, and guess what?... I've just weighed myself.... and I've put on five pounds...

CD to SF is it a good idea?

Yes, I'm switching from CD to SF because of the cost too. I just can't keep paying £40 per week for CD, my husband's doing his nut! Will be running down my stocks of CD this week and then gradually switching over. Will keep you posted as to whether I gain weight.

    Weekend temptations and fading resolution

Yes, I've been feeling exactly the same - this lovely weather has meant that everyone on our estate appears to have got their BBQ out, dusted it down and been busy barbying over the weekend. The temptation was just too much. Gave in on Saturday, but just had the meat, not the bread. The...

Yes, very well done! I wish I could have done the same when we went away camping last weekend - I might have lost some weight last week rather than STS! Good on yer!

    COKE ZERO

Oh that's strange, I find Coke Zero a godsend. It fills me up if I start to feel hungry and it tastes SO much better than water! I've never had a gain whilst drinking it and it's never knocked me out of ketosis. Thank God for Coke Zero!
