Hoping to find others in same position and who have successfully followed the SW plan!

Any ideas or tips please?

Thanks

Hi, I am type 2. In 14 months I've lost my 6 stone 1 LB. Target weight is 10.9 now and I've maintained it for over a year :)
I have only missed class twice, once Mums wedding and once broken finger. I found it so easy, as my willpower came from wanting to live basically! I stuck to plan and still do now :) my tip is to put as much effort into fantastic meals :) the more effort you put it the less likely you'll be bored. My hubby has lost over a stone just eating the same tea as me. But he isn't big anyway just his belly ;)
My nurses and doctors are over the moon with my results now. My cholesterol blood pressure and diabetics are all normal :)

I think when you're told you're healths at risk there's only you who can take responsibly to ensure you do as much as you can to solve the problem. I'm 46 now and this SW will be for life now, I don't have a choice other than worst case scenario if I don't. Good luck xx

Oh and I did 30 mins daily on my wi fit at home or mjni trampoline too, as you're supposed to with type 2. And I have incredibly poorly legs and knees. But I just soldiered through the pain! X

Thanks Bunnylush for the encouragement...I am finding my way round the whole concept of the diet and with the added prob of being gluten free it will sink in soon.

I look forward to losing..you have done really well in just 14 months!! That is an inspiration, thank you

Hi Dietmad.
Welcome to SW & this forum (the best one around!)

I too was T2 Diabetic when I started SW but last week at my latest check-up my doctor told me that all my readings are the same as a man in perfect health so technically I am not T2 anymore! At the start I was given 6 months to live if I didn't change my way of life, I good incentive to try!
If you meed any SW based recipes then follow the links below, you will find recipes to cover almost every type of SW food...
Good luck and if you ever get stuck, then just shout!
Pete

That's great news, Pete. Thanks for the inspiration....

Type 2 here as well. And within the last 2 months the changes are incredible. I have been able to reduce my diabetes medicine by half and if it goes on like this in another 3 months have it reduced again. I have only lost 1 1/2 stone and more than 2 to go but the inspiration i get from healthy blood-sugars, cholesterol and blood pressure is fabulous. So yes, this works and will make your life a lot better as it has done for many others.

Glad I have heard from others with this condition, it helps a lot to know it works! I have already seen my morning bgs halved in a week...so am really glad!

I am newly diagnose T2 also and not on any meds as yet. Just to keep in mind also, fruit was something that I was told to watch for us diabetics. I had gestational diabetes during the four of my pregnancies and was always told that while fruit has fructose and is a natural sugar, we still have to be careful so fruit is not really free for us as it still elevates our blood glucose just the same as carbs or a bar of chocolate. I have just a banana every day. This is high in carbs and fructose but all the same, it means that I have some fruit intake. I certainly would not eat unlimited bananas, apples etc. So just something to keep an eye on. I use myfitnesspal not only to keep track of calories while losing weight but to check my intake of sugar and fat. I am following slimming world loosely however but just modify it with issues like fruit, as I said. Make sure to also try to eat wholegrain bread if using as your HEXb and wholewheat spaghetti/pasta instead of white because of its lower GI value and because its much healthier and has more fibre.

Thanks Bingeater, good advice, altho I am ok with all the berry family...they do not move my bgs at all, so freely eat those. I prefer not to eat bread / pasta as being gluten free, some of the options are yuk...lol

Thanks, to you also dietmad, as I had no idea about the berry thing. do you mean that strawberries and blackberries etc keep your BG low?. if so I must have them, lol. I am not at the stage of monitoring my BGs so am unaware of what works fruit wise. I naturally seem to gravitate towards bananas and pineapple, which are the worst offenders as far as I am aware.

I try to eat low carb and test Everything first-time I eat else I won't know what affects my bloods. I guess your doctor hasn't given you a Meter?

I just got the "stop binge eating" lecture from the nurse. This was just because I made her aware of my binge eating disorder. The doctor referred me to a website and that was it!!. They said that because I was 'borderline' diabetic, that there was no need for a meter and just to keep an 'eye' on my diet.

I now know from training days on diabetes as I am a student nurse, that there is absolutely no such thing as 'borderline' diabetes. you either are or you are not diabetic. you may get better control of it but once you are diagnosed diabetic, it is a lifelong progressive metabolic disorder. I have had to educate myself and keep track of my HBA1c tests and ring the doctor to book my bloods whenever I feel that I should ie every three months. However, I am from the south of Ireland where services are absolutely disastrous in regards to health. I am training in Northern Ireland and I have been lucky enough to attend a patient education full day on newly diagnosed diabetics. This helped me two-fold. It helped me on how to educate other diabetics and it helped me personally as I have just been diagnosed. I also attended diabetic nursing teams training days and seen how the community services work up here. I cannot believe how much help and education that is helping diabetic patients.

I was diagnosed t2 about 18 months ago and did a lot of research, visited a lot of forums, globally and not just UK. I did Atkins diet for quite a while and it was fantastic for my blood sugars (dont take any medication) but then other half was made redundant and couldnt afford to do it anymore and now he is back at work just cant get back into it. Hence going to SW - joined a few weeks ago. I do extra easy but really limit my carbs. You do need to test - obviously what one person can have without it affecting blood sugars might not be what everyone can have - after all, we are all different.

I dont eat much fruit but do have a banana occasionally. Only ever have one low fat yogurt a day as well as these are loaded with sugars (most of the carbs are sugars) - makes you wonder if all this diet food with all the added sugar (because they have removed the fat) has contributed to the diabetes epidemic.

Most doctors in the UK dont give out testing strips unfortunately but did find a meter on Amazon which worked out the cheapest and this was SD Codefree so do buy my own strips and everytime I have something different I test. I cant eat porridge or cereals especially in the morning as I find this is when my bg's are more susceptible to what I eat.

Good luck with SW - and keep us all posted.

I agree on the help available in Northern Ireland Binge Eater. I live in Belfast and the support i get here is fantastic. I have been able to reduce my diabetes meds a lot already since joining SW but still find it hard to lose weight. The meds do not really help in losing weight, in fact you can gain weight because of it.
But even if it's harder to keep losing weight the positives are outweighing the negatives by a mile. And as been said before , where others can eat loads of pasta and fruits, with diabetes you have to be careful with eating them. Therefor i tend to stay on red days where i have my protein and vegies.

Hi Dietmad, I'm also T2 and have just started SW last night. I take quite a bit of medication but having followed a low carb plan for 6 months have not been able to bring my blood sugars low enough so am going to weight loss route now. Would be great to hear about your journey.

When you ladies say, low carb, do you mean no potatoes or bread?. Is red a low carb?. I have done atkins before but it always ends in a binge overload of carbs, lol. How much carbs would you eat?. I would have a baked potato, banana and two slices of wholegrain bread per day as my carbs. do you think this is too much?. I really want to slow down the diabetes as much as possible for as long as possible. Well done to you, topjaar and Sallybear. you seem to be flying it with the healthy eating.

Hi Binge Eater, for me, eating a low carb plan is about simple healthy choices, meats, fish, dairy, and vegetables that grow above ground, those that grow below store more starches and raise blood sugars. Fruits limited to berries and melons.

The only problem with low carbing for me, is eating enough and cheaply and lunches and snacks and eating out etc. And to be totally honest, it does help lose weight and also to keep sugars down, but an increase in cholesterol and other things really need me to focus more on health and lower fat.

Well done so far to you though :)
