Im only on week 2 and sticking to it 100%. Went out last night and instead of my usual alcohol drank 5 glasses of diet cola. This morning 4lbs weight gain. How come???? I peed well all night (I know, too much info), so dont think its fluid retention. I lost 5 lbs the first week, I have not deviated away from the diet either. I have around 10 syns a day most days.

Found it totally boring in the bar last night not on my usual baccardi's, but felf it would be well worth it, but this morning I found out it was not.

Anyone got any advice for me (apart from a telling off for getting on the scales). Thanks

When should you have weigh in, was it this morning or another day? I really don't think diet coke would cause you to have a gain like that. Are you sure you are eating 1/3 superfree with EVERY meal? Are you keeping a food diary? Might help to look at that. Have you suddenly started doing a lot of exercise? Whatever the reason, don't let it get you down. Lots of us can have unexplained gains but stick with it and it may well show at your next weigh in x

I used to drink about three cans/bottles of diet coke a day. I've cut it down to one small bottle a day and I notice a difference, I'm definitely not as bloated. I know they are free but I find it makes a difference.

OK thanks thats interesting. I have no idea what else I could drink though that would be low cal. Personally I would stay in at nights, but hubby likes his weekend drinking session on Sat nights.

I know what you're saying, if we go out and I'm not drinking I would normally have diet coke too. A bit boring but how about water with some lemon in it?

Our weight naturally goes up and down from day to day so best not to get on the scales in between official weigh ins hun x

Agree with this, I've learnt that over the years!

yeah I would agree with our weight changing day to day, so only weighing at your normal time.

I also found that diet coke bloats me SO much so I've cut right back on it. You also COULD have a drink if you wanted to, just syn it :) maybe alternate an alcoholic drink with water and lemon.

And I would second looking at your food diary too. Youre only just starting out so you might be doing something you THINK is right but isnt. Im guilty of that one, so glad I handed my food diary to my consultant otherwise I would never have known.

my hubby got a soda stream for xmas and its brill! as long as u use the no added sugar flavours its free too. my fav is raspberry and carnberry and its fizzy!

ooooww sada stream sounds really great. I truly think that pubs should think more 'out of the box' when it comes to non alcoholic drinks. Mine is diet coke, slimline tonic, and nothing else. Especially when we are supposed to advocate healthy living as part of an everyday lifestyle.

Could be a couple of things but almost certainly hydration / fluid level related.

You may have been a little dehydrated and the DC rehydrated you or you may have been retaining fluids (for a range of regions). Or, you may have been particularly dehydrated at your last weigh in - or a combination of all 3.

Regarding weighing everyday, i'm an advocate of it - i know its not a widely held opinion, but i do it for exactly this reason.

I'd be devastated if i'd stuck to a plan 100% and was 4lbs up on the one day that i weighed in. For me, i can track my weight daily, and if i get a blip like this, but am on a losing streak, then i know the diet is working and its just one of those things - if however, i waited a week, after being 100% and was up i would lose heart and probably think whats the point.

As i say, thats what works for me, but probably because i'm massively impatient!

Try not to let it get you down weight fluctuates I can weigh myself in the morning and before I've even eaten weigh myself 2 hours later and be 3 lb heavier. So don't worry to much about the scales just stick to the plan and have patience it does work.

Diet coke on a sat night isn't going to affect your weight loss unless your having loads of it every day!! If it helps you keep on track when your out at the pub then do it, I drink diet coke when I'm out like once or twice a week and it's fine. It will just be natural fluctuations so just take your weight reading from the actual weigh in day and don't worry too much

I drink loads of diet coke (or similar) every day, and it doesn't affect my weight losses. I just can't get away with drinking water and I find squash pretty boring too - I like something with a bit of fizz. I drink maybe 2 bottles and 2-3 cans a day.

Agree with others who have said about weight fluctuating daily and that the coke won't actually have made you put on weight as such but one point to remember that no-one ever points out is that diet coke can actually really slow your weight loss down. Your liver is your fat burning organ but it also deals with toxins in your body. When you're drinking water, the body can deal with the fat burning all the time. Shove diet coke in there and it will prioritise getting rid of that first rather than fat burning. I'm not a nutritionist myself but sister in law of Amanda Hamilton who has been on the tellybox saying the very same thing so it must be true!!

I went out Saturday night and drank soda water. I find I just can't drink quantities of diet coke without feeling unwell.

Best of all it cost 70p one time and the other times was free! So this is now my non alcoholic bar drink of choice. I also like my soda stream.

I agree about fluctuations. I weighed 2lb more the morning after running 5k and then was down again with 1/2lb off the following day. Sometimes bodies are weird!!

I drink 3 cans of coke zero every day and it's never affected my losses.

As Patchwork Puss said, best not to weigh until official weigh in as your weight can fluctuate a lot. I've made the mistake of sneak weighing myself too and felt dejected at not seeing what I wanted, only to be pleasantly surprised at WI :D

Last point, I do NOT recommend going to the bar and having a crap night on soft drinks! Have your Bacardi and syn it accordingly. For me, although the official SW plan is 15 syns per day, I personally took 105 syns over the week and used them at the weekend. I enjoy going out for a drink and would have felt miserable if I couldn't have a few glasses of red wine of a weekend.

Red wine isn't one of the lower syn drinks, but it's the only thing I like, can't stand spirits like vodka or gin, so it would not be feasible for me to have what I want, and still use daily syns. It worked for me and I still had great losses, so might be worth considering :D

Thank you all so much. Cant tell you how much reading your replies have helped me. I am especially interesting in LOLACOLAS reply, and it has given me a lot to think about. I could not get to club last week as I was visiting friends, but willstill go this week and see what happens.

Muchas gratius folks.
