Hello everyone,

Little advice please. I understand one third of my plate has to be super free for EE to work. So I add salad or veg to my meal. But if I have a curry I don't really want a side salad or veg can I have a starter of salad or fruit for pudding and count that as my one third? as long as it really = one third??

Thanks in advance!! :) Stacey

I think it's meant to be 1/3 of your plate, but I'd often have a bit of fruit to bump mine up a bit. It's a little trial and error, if you still get your losses with adding fruit before your meal, then I don't see the harm.

It's better to have the fruit before your meal though, to make sure you're not stuffing it in to you after dinner just cos you have to have it.
If you have fruit first, you might not eat as much curry. But if you have your plate of curry first, and you're full up, stuffing in an apple for afters isn't going to work as you're eating more than you need to be full up.

I hope I've not made that sound more complicated than it actually is!

For curries and stir fries etc, I add heaps of SF to the actual sauces, so it's not necessarily a side of salad or veg.

The 1/3 is supposed to naturally limit your intake of free food so as said before eating it afterwards wouldnt work - though a salad starter would if it makes you then reduce your main course size. Its really about perception of how much food is on your plate - we all know how food/weightloss is all about the mind too

But also as said above you can count any superfree cooked within the dish.

When I have something like curry or chilli I try to have either a bed of leaves or a side dish of diced cucumber, onions and tomatoes with balsamic vinegar - goes very well with it!

Here are some ideas for superfree you can add to a plate when having curries:

- Grated raw carrot - Doesn't taste of much and you can mix it in with the rice, you can barely taste it!
- Minted yogurt cucumber salad - Mix 0% fat greek yogurt with mint sauce and coat thinly sliced cucumber and onions, this is my favourite to have with anything spicy!
- Saag 'paneer' - Wilt a load of spinach with onions, add garlic and any spices you fancy. You can add a little bit of stock to make a light sauce, a teaspoon of yogurt, and a healthy extra serving of cheese, or just have the spinach by itself. Goes lovely with curry!

Hope that's some help! :)

mmmm - am liking the sound of that spinach

some me brill ideas, the paneer will need to be syned as it's not classed as hexa, it's not much though.

Ah yeah, I normally use regular cheddar or mozzarella, so it's within healthy extra range. Should probably have been more clear there! x

Yes you can, either would be fine, Sw do it their publications too :) Or its really easy to get veggies into things like curries, stews, chilli, and pasta dishes so pile them in there!

i personally have Spinach on the side and onions, toms and musrooms in any curry I make. I will then add peas, onion and grated carrot into my rice - just to include the superfree foods we need

As people have said if you are making the curry yourself then most of it will be super free anyway, tomatoes, onions, spinach, mushrooms etc. You don't then need to add any other superfree to your plate, unless you want to that is!

I don't add side salad or veg to my curries but I saw in the new recipe book (can't remember the name, something express?) there's a recipe for veg pilau rice so if you're having superfree in the curry such as peppers, mushrooms, onions, tinned tomatoes then veg in the rice then it's probably enough! I'm gonna do the rice next time I do curry as I always get veg pilau if I get an Indian and really find plain rice boring when I have curry at home

Hi
I've only recently started back at SW after a few years away, and everyone is raving about "cauliflower" rice with curries and chilli. I think its just grated cauliflower, cooked in the microwave and used instead of rice.

Anyone else tried it?

Mossie

Thanks so much. Loads of great replies.

Deffo Going to try a few out.... love the sound of yogurt and mint dip. ...mmmmm
